Looking for a shop in the Sacramento area to mount new Deathwish 190s when they arrive. Anyone had positive (or really) negative experiences recently with shops around town? Been 5+ years since I had to get anything new mounted.

I suggest having them mounted in Tahoe. I don't know of a shop down here that I trust. I do have the jig for Pivots/FKS if that's what your mounting. Just got finished mounting a pair.

How was coverage on 6? I'm heading up either late tonight or first thing tomorrow for my first day of the season. Congrats on never going back to Vermont ;-)

Coverage was good. Only skied monte/cabin as it was getting the most sun. Couple rocks in a few spots to jump off of. Saw people heading to sentinel but was pretty skeptical of how conditions would be over there. Looked shady. Everything else under 6 was real crusty. Follow the sun was the name of the game today. If any maggots want to meet up next weekend shoot me a PM, I'd love for some people to show me around.

Sleeping in n catching that afternoon solar cycle
Super impressed w the base we just got laid down. The rain kicked that elusive November corn into gear. Next storm should be pretty much game on above 8.5k

Fine line between decent turns and awful today. The few panels that had gotten alot of sun were fun. Otherwise rain/breakable crust. Good enough coverage. Nice to be back at it. Name: 1125181110~2.jpeg

I was not up today. We left before 6 opened. I was hiking around in Thursday.

Coverage is great on the top third. The transition zones are thin enough. I know they pushed a little snow around to bridge a few areas. The rain effected drainage zones the most. Think the willows in the center lower Montes.

As I was tossing out garbage, I could see snow being pushed around on Sentinel. As stated, I’d assume it was pretty firm over there. But also saw someone making decent turns down Oly.

Another 18” of moderate density snow would make things about perfect. I for one prefer low tide.

But the ridgeline itself is speckled.

Conversely, if the snow absorbs less long-wave radiation than it is emitting, the net longwave radiation is negative. By itself, this would cool (or freeze) the snowpack. A snow surface can freeze when atmospheric temperatures are above 32˚F if the the longwave energy loss exceeds sensible heat flux.
A decent description of the long/short wave radiation balance as it relates to snowpacks can be found here...

The lack of cloud cover in some areas led me to that conclusion, but after reading ottime's post about cloud cover at Kirkwood, I suspect it was something similar to a rime event. Somewhere between rime and freezing rain. Just a guess. It'll be interesting to see if it gets broken down before we get more snow on top, or if it persists on shaded aspects.

Thank @Ottime & @tnorts! Just wrapped up dinner w/ family and loading to head up to the wood tonight. Will be poking around tomorrow while ducking work calls (ssshhh.. don't tell them I'm not "working from home").

That's my fear. Only place I'm usually overnight in Tahoe is Kirkwood and not sure who the techs in the valley are these days. I've never mustered the courage to drill my own.

I got 3rd chair on 6, the mid section of montes was nicer b/c it was in the sun. Far Skiers right traverse off of 11 was awful this morning and not much better around 2. Sentinel lap last was firm and icy but carvable not that death cookie releasing rainfrozen breakable crust. Left at 3, seems like the thing to do is arrive mid day when the sun is melting the crust layer.

I think my initial post may have been misinterpreted but that’s irrelevant now. I appreciate the link, I’m familiar with the concept but I’m still a snow science noob so all the insight helps a bunch. Taking my level 2 in December and hope to spend a lot of time in the hills this season.

It’s intimidating but not too hard, even with just the paper template. Practice on a 2x4 until you’re comfortable. I actually print templates on a transparency—makes it easier to center everything.

In the long run you’ll end up with a bunch of skis because you’ll buy up bindings and skis on the cheap to mount yourself.

My friends just got two successful mounts at KW this weekend.

I won’t go there. They screwed up two mounts in a row (different seasons) for me. I now mount my own w a paper jig.

I think you are right w the rime. I was outside Friday night and had a hard time telling if the precip was frozen or not. It was mostly “misty” feeling. I imagine it was just at the border between solid and liquid and it froze on contact with the snow. Not windy enough for a true rime event.

Crust looked pretty solid in the shade. Sunny aspects were definitely broken down.

Next event comes in warm and finishes cold. Then the 2nd comes in cool and finishes cold. I’d expect decent bonding.

Race Course, Lower Montes, Buckboard and below 11 were all good early on Sunday. If all you can enjoy is uncut off piste, mid day is want you want for sure. Once that sun goes behind the ridge, it is all firm. Time to break out a GS ski and hit a few more groomer laps.

All will be different by the weekend. Hope this next round finishes cold and we will be off to a great start.

Squaw's new PTZ webcam has some pretty sweet pre-selected "channels" that allow you to auto-focus on particular locations on the mountain with a live shot.

Broken Arrow, top of KT, Alpine summit, Palisades, Mainline Pocket, Granite peak, etc. Pretty fun to play with - bet you could even watch Palisades, Granite, or Mainline sessions with it...

Pretty sure we rode up 6 today. Chatted about fat tire biking, hiking w/ my kids before Thanksgivings. Was in bright yellow pants and some old Gots.

Was a fun day despite the changing of the conditions.

My favorite runs of the day were my last 2 laps down Sentinel. Took 3 laps before I trusted the crust to not break but then the last 2 were just smooth, fast and fun. Good first day of the season and ready for the next storm cycle!

Wow...Brooks Range had an insane sale today. $720 sleeping bag for $80. $300 down jacket for $33.

Most clothing and sleeping bags sold out, but most of the snow science/saws/shovels are in stock. Stupid cheap.
