My current 100 yard club is a 53/9 wedge, which I bent from a 56/12. (I also bent it a couple degrees upright cuz it came stock too flat.) My full 60 wedge goes 75-80 yards. I also carry a 65/12 (wide sole), full shot goes 45-50 yards. My PW (Bridgestone J40) is 46. Those yardages are @ est. 60F. They go a bit farther in hot weather, a bit less in cool weather. I more often play in cool weather. All my clubs are swing weighted D4, standard length (higher swing weight /standard length thanks to Winn Lite midsize grips).

    that's interesting. my wedge set is 60/10, 56/16, 52/12, 52/10. i don't use the 52/10. i wonder if i could have it bent to 48 or 49.

That seems like a large distance gap between a 45* and a 52* club. You might expect your 52 full swing would go about 100* (1.5 clubs shorter than PW)

You check the lofts? Same shafts?

For example, on a flat course, my wedges might go like this:
    46* - 117
    50* - 106
    54* - 95
    3/4 swing 54* - 75
    1/2 swing 54* - 50
58.5* - no idea; use around green

i think it's because i'm afraid a full swing with my wedges. 80 is as far as i've been hitting it comfortably, with a 3/4 ish swing

I need bounce, my swing path on irons is so steep that anything less than 12* bounce is untenable

After temperature dropped, my 100 seems to be the 8 iron.

    Lost about 15-18 yards.

Good dispersion. Take the left side out of play. Range balls don’t as far so half that loss is probably right.

Hmmmm. So, do you play the ball way back in your stance for wedge shots? Bounce is good on some surfaces, i.e., sand, some rough, but a detriment on other surfaces, e.g., hard pan. I like having a range of bounces on my wedges.

ETA: Supplementing my prior post: My wedge set: 46/7, 53/9, 60/8, 65/12 (wide sole)

Skitobe loaned me his spare Mizuno HP-4 PW (46) because the grooves in my System 3000 PW (47) were worn down from playing and practicing. I use it for 120 - 100. I've always had more time than money for golf clubs and like practicing as much or more than playing.

i have a 52/10 and a 52/12. i don't use the 52/10. a friend suggested learning to hit a better 100y shot with my pw, but we also talked about bending the 52/12 to 48 or 49. the pw for my set sells for $70ish used on ebay and i can't do that. and like he said, there is no easy way out.

Took a day off and playing alone at West Point Golf Course which opened to public since 2007.
They are maintaining back 9, so playing front 9 twice.
Beautiful fall day with almost empty course.
But why can’t I play better??!!

    Fall golf solo. Nice.

I should play today. Tin Cup GC&Country Store is closing for good next week. Wife has a 1:30 doctors appointment. Weather forecast is sunny today with rain moving in tomorrow that will last until June. All pointing to PLAY GOLF!!

52/12 were typical when greenside bunker wedges were 52 or 53 with high bounce. These days the more common trend is 55 or 56 with 12 or 14 bounce for greenside bunkers. (I prefer more loft than that for my greenside bunker wedge.)

A 50 or 51 or 52 gap wedge is a good idea, although I prefer one with less bounce. If you bend the 52/12 to a 48/8 or 49/9, that seems too close to your PW, no? How about bending your 52/10 to a 51/9 or 50/8?

What is your plan? I try to make my worst score on any hole bogey. Plan the hole backwards with a two putt on every green. Avoid the big number at all cost. If 6 iron is working hit two six irons and a wedge into a par four.

Way too many people hit driver off the tee too often trying to get lucky. Hit one driver in the rough and then go to fairway metal. If that doesn’t work go to iron.

I like to play a practice round like Ive seen the pro's do. Hit a drive or two, hit 2 more to the green from someplace along the way, chip on 4 balls from around the green, take a putt or two and then move to the next hole. More PRACTICE than GOLF. I might play a Calloway ball vs Titleist ball match on a hole or two.

Hope you went out and played.
    Otherwise I’m disappointed!!!

My plan is not to hit triple.
Trying to settle with double bogey or less and two putt.
Reality is I hit 3-4 triple or more shots and 3-4 three putts.
Would love to be a bogey player next year.

    Hit 55 and 50 today.
    Bad end of 95-105 range.

    Sure was beautiful out though.
Had a great day playing bad golf.

Heading out to play after I post this. I'm playing a match with the guy that I played my first round with at Cascade GC & Country Store. I'll hit a dozen 80 yd pw's to warm up and I'm switching from a visored golf cap to my wool tweed newsboy and see it will up my game.

Kiddo has a nice straight arm. Face looks square. Strong grip good thing for a kid.

iceman's approach is solid. Mine is a bit different: Keep it in play, have a good short game and avoid double bogies. Course management is not just for low handicap players. Playing to the front of the green is often smarter than playing to the pin. Get the religion that getting up and down for par is more rewarding than a regulation 2-putt par. Learn to lag. 3 putts suck.

wooley is spot on re practice rounds. When you play solo or in a twosome with a bud and aren't being pushed, play two balls (A ball and B ball) and play an additional ball or two around the green. Don't feel any need to keep score when you play solo but if you insist on keeping score, score only your A ball. ETA: If you're keeping a handicap, ignore the foregoing for rounds you plan to post a score. Make the decision before teeing off # 1 whether it's a scoring round or a practice round. If it's a scoring/posting round, play 1 ball, of course.
