Players in my old fart league swear by them. Inside of 100 yds my intuitive guess is generally +/- 2 yds from what the distance is as measured with a ranger finder. It's a good tool to use now that game improvement devices are legal. Invention of the greens mower was the big game changer.

x2. I use my 62 for most shots around the green. Once you learn to deloft, etc you can hit a bunch of different shots with it.

By the same token, sometimes a putter from 20 yards off the green is a good play, also.

I bought a Garmin S20 once I joined the men's league at the local muni - no complaints thus far. Gives you distances to hazards, layups, dog legs, etc...

i use my $30/yr golfshot pro app on my phone. it's definitely better than nothing but i always figure +or- 5yd in danger situations so that potential lack of accuracy can be frustrating. in general it seems pretty consistent and accurate.

I used a GPS app for yrs and it was decent but not very convenient.

I played in a tournament and the course wasn't in the system. Complete fucking nightmare not having accurate yardage.

I bought my laser the next day

During the WGC the commentary was mentioning how often the players are using putter from the fairway these days. Course conditions are so much better it makes it a better play.

does it give you the distances to hazards? mine ended up costing me less because of a discount to join and them a discount to renew but i don't remember which was which. i had golfpad several years ago but didnt stick with it.

I remember a nick price lesson. He said learn to use a pitching wedge for everything around the green and i totally agree with him. Different ball position in the stance. Different hand position. You learn to be creative.

Like tiger says. Pressure is pitching in the living room over your moms china.

60 degree wedge is a big mistake. I can’t hit it. I carry a 58 but use with caution.

It’s interesting to hear a good player also has problems with a 60 degree lob wedge. I love mine when it works, but the consequences are severe when it doesn’t, and the screw ups come way too often, no matter how much I practiced with it.

Thanks, I can hit 60 ok but my control is not as good as a 58 on chip or full swing. My set is 50-54-58.

Those aprons are double cut and usually rolled as well for those type of events (majors, WGC, Fed ex playoffs)

I hit my wedges a mile (135/140-125/130-100/105)

I wanna keep gap wedge distance the same, and take a little off my full SW and LW distances

My yardage control is probably the best part of my game so I'm very particular about my lofts. I'm really not that good of a player compared to a lot of people...but I have distance contol that's almost spooky

I’ve advocated for the PW but as noted in the vid modern PW is 3-5 degrees stronger than years ago so using a 50-52 gap for your go to chipping iron is probably better

After watching the Vokey vid I suspect flattening my 60 and or the 58 a degree or two might help. I typically slight pull a standard lie club in my L wedges and could never sort that out. Moreso in the 60.

So I have been holding off getting new irons for a long time because I'm trying to get a fitting on the books. Haven't had the time, this summer has been crazy w/work plus a new baby.

Anyway I guess my question is, how important is a fitting? I hover in in the 10-12 handicap range and I'm a very averagely proportioned dude. Every time I do one of those static fitting guides based on height, wrist-to-floor, etc I'm standard everything.

A couple of my regular playing partners have gotten fit for clubs recently and it's not like they started lighting it up all of the sudden. I still beat them just as often as I did before so I'm inclined to think club fitting is overrated and I should just buy some irons off the rack.

I'd say it's worth it more so for the shaft fitting than anything else. You still could be better suited to play a non standard lie as well, and it will straighten you out at least a little if you're not currently using what you should be.

I see so many people using the wrong shaft it's sad. Especially people with high swing speeds. If you have driver SS of 110+ you likely shouldn't be going near anything off the shelf. They don't stock new drivers with x-stiff shafts in retail stores and there's a lot of people that should be using them and don't. There's also a huge difference in one brand's stiff or x-stiff vs another brand. Shaft weight also is a huge factor.


Using a shaft that's too weak with give you a much bigger dispersion of balls vs stiffer shaft. If it's too stiff you likely will lose distance and miss right frequently.

There's also a big difference in flight apex between different kinds of shafts.

Not sure if that’s necessary for my level of golf.
New set of iron probably isn’t even necessary next couple years, either.
I would like to wait til my swing’s somewhat stable and consistent.

Get a lie check on your current irons. If the lie is ok you're probably fine. Too flat=slice, too upright=pull.
