I was leading a ride down a trail at Galby... I had one woman that was struggling and then the rest of the group with a couple stronger beginners and intermediates ahead plus the other ride leader.

So my beginner was struggling to walk over some things and a dude and girl are coming up on us hot, and they look like they aren't going to stop. I tell them that there is a whole group of beginners ahead and if they give me a minute, I'll clear everyone out of their way.

The section ahead was fun and they already had to stop and it was a good place to stop/start. If they just passed us they would have had to go around a bunch of people totally wrecking the flow of the trail.

I thought I was doing them a favor.

So the girl says well it sounds like they shouldn't be on this trail...

So WTF. The trail, A-dog on Galby. It's a fun trail. It's not where you go to get super rad.

Super rad bros don't ride that trail unless they are teaching their girlfriends or just happen to be going down that way...

Ugh. Mountain bikers, at least in bham are generally so chill and nice that when you run into jerks its extra shocking.

People pedaling up unofficial downhill trails during prime riding hours when there is a great climbing trail that everyone else uses.

Can we have some trails that ride both ways again sometime? Maybe with some rolling terrain and some actual distance? I like getting the "hard part" over and enjoying the down as much as the next guy, but how about some variety? Why is it that just as remote dropper posts and stable pedalers are becoming ubiquitous there's an explosion of trails that would work just as well with a lock-out and a QR on the seat?

Hell with that. The mountains are the whole point. I want to go up and down and up and down and up and down...see the pattern? We have some great old ridge trails that do it nicely, but access is a pain and the new stuff close to town is always a sloped BMX track with an obvious direction. Like the only way to stay off the brakes is to build more berms. They're fine. But enough already. Get off my lawn etc.

Almost had a catastrophic collision with a fuckface in ALL BLACK spandex and on an ALL BLACK bike with a black helmet on an unofficially downhill-only trail two days ago.

Fuck you guy. Ride the road like everyone else. Or at least don't wear all black if you are going to be a moron.

Come east. For the most part we go up and down and up and down. There are some long ups and downs but more of it is a lot of both.

I might have to do that. I've got some family that swears they are only staying back east temporarily, so maybe I should visit before they bolt. Riding might tip the scales. Thanks!

Yes. You'd think this just common sense not to mention common courtesy.

No! WTF! Way too much of that shit around. Like 95%+ off all MTB trails. We need more directional trails. Again WTF.

Yeah, we used to, before they put in Hummingbird.

But everything was uphill back then.

Not here--at least not close to town. Plenty of options for riding up a road and descending on a trail and all the new stuff is more of the same. Get out the mini-excavator and lay in the switchbacks. And like I said, they're fine trails and fun to go down--at least while they're moist. But it's gotten to where nothing new gets done that doesn't involve wide, dusty berm tracks winding their way between what should be some really interesting rock features. In a couple months we'll be able to decide whether we're skipping it to save our lungs from the smoke or the dust, so I'm bitching in the rant thread now while I'm semi-lucid.

Variety is good and I agree about directional use. Short, overused loops? Go directional. And make it explicit with signage, don't rely on the terrain. As for the goon climbing the DH trail with earbuds--who knows about that guy? He's probably looking to go up the steepest incline he can find.

You mean northeast. Don’t impose your rolling pedalfests on me! [emoji16]

Just the opposite. Just because a trail is shuttle-able doesn't mean up hill traffic needs to jump out of the way of frat boys with no bike handling skills.

I don't want them to jump out of the way - I want them to not be riding up the trail in the first place.

The shuttling thing is irrelevant. Even for trails that require pedaling to the top, plenty of them have a defacto direction of travel. People who ignore that are douches. And that applies to both directions - people who descend climbing trails are douches, as are people who climb descending trails. Those people are prioritizing their use over everyone else's on a communal resource, so fuck them.

    Kinda depends.

Sometimes riders don't have the skills for the down trail so the climbing trail is the only option.

If going down the climbing trail and aware and willing to get off trail for climbers. Fine.

If they want to play chicken with me while I grind up a steep part? Fuck em.

If a trail is an "unofficial downhill trail", how is one suppose to know that unless there is some sort of signage which would make it an "official downhill trail"?

    Asking for a friend.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

When in doubt, just ride up it on a sunny weekend, that should clarify it.

One would live in the area and ride the trails enough to know which ones are climbs and which ones are descents. Or you start pedaling up it and find it to be a miserable climb, and notice there are a bunch of features on the trail going in the other direction. Or look at trailforks and see if the trail has an indicated direction.

But I don't think anyone's bitching about someone who's new to an area and happens to go there wrong way on an unmarked trail. It's the guy that knows better but does it anyways that's the problem.

We have 2 way trails for the most part, but some people seem to forget that.
