    Saw a riding buddy get doored and hit the edge of the door hard. He was only going about 15 mph but broke his femur and couldn't ride for 6 months. Scary stuff, I try to stay out of that zone.

    On my commute this morning a truck was parked in the bike lane. I thought of blowing an air horn, calling 911, and recording it for YouTube fame and fortune. But I don't have an air horn so I just said "morning" to the guys unloading furniture and went around.

    Jose Del Toro, 71, of Turlock was identified Thursday as the bicyclist who died after being struck by a car on East Harding Road the night before, the Stanislaus County Coroner's Office reported.

    The crash happened about 8:30 p.m. on Harding east of Lander Avenue. Del Toro was eastbound, and wearing dark clothing and no helmet, the California Highway Patrol reported. Additionally, his bike had no rear reflector.

    Fu*king Cyclists

    It's funny he thinks these videos make him look like a good guy. That video would have been perfect if after his tirade the driver would have walked over and punched him in the face lol

    He doesn't even know the law, which in Minnesota, as in CA, requires cyclists to ride as close to the right side of the road as practicable. Whether or not that was a designated bike lane, and it sure looked like one, he should have been in it. Assholes like that make riding a bike more dangerous for the rest of us, not safer.

    Notice the construction in the video that probably prevented anyone passing him for who knows how long while he rode down the middle of the highway. I'll give that driver huge props for recognizing the insanity and disengaging with the nutjob. Not sure how I would react to that situation w some idiot screaming like that

    He's an idiot.

    But in MN the law is that the "practicable" is determined by the cyclist alone -- not motorists or cops. If the cyclist's determination of "practicable" means that it is unsafe the pass the cyclist without switching lanes, taking the whole lane is allowable. It may be different in CA, no idear.

    Where does the minnesota vehicle code say that?
    "Subd. 4.Riding rules. (a) Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under any of the following situations:
    (1) when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction;

    (2) when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway;

    (3) when reasonably necessary to avoid conditions, including fixed or moving objects, vehicles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or narrow width lanes, that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge; or

    (4) when operating on the shoulder of a roadway or in a bicycle lane."

    If you're aware of any statutes or case law that support what you say, post it. In the meantime I strongly advise you to stay to the right when you can.

    Actually, I believe it would be up to the judge in traffic court, or to the jury if there was an accident as a result. And I don't see any judge or jury finding that guy in the right. I love it when people make up their own rules and expect the rest of the world to follow them.

    Apologies, my memory was slipping between my current state (CO) and past state (MN.) In CO, the cyclist determines what is safe

    42-4-1412 5.a.i. "... a bicyclist shall ride far enough to the right as judged safe by the bicyclist to facilitate the movement of such overtaking vehicles unless other conditions make it unsafe to do so..."

    Agree

    I think.

    Pretty sure, assuming my translation is accurate.

    Also under CO law slow moving motor vehicles are required to pull over when obstructing traffic, and bicycles are subject to the same rules as other vehicles. So as Judge Goat interprets the law, if the cyclist does not find it practicable to right far enough to the right to allow cars to pass, they must pull over to let cars pass periodically. I wonder how Judge Judy sees it.

    My kid did a cross country bike "charity" bike ride with his national fraternity. Coming through Colorado there was a stretch they had to ride on I70 in the mountains--on Sunday, July 5-- and staying to the right as they passed the stopped cars was definitely practicable.

    He's clearly an asshole, but I think he's correct on the law. If that isn't a designated bike lane then the white line is considered the edge of the roadway. MN (and CA) law doesn't require riding on the shoulder. (CO does though.)

    His delivery is a bit questionable, but he is not wrong. The reckless moves made by motorists just to gain a few seconds are fucking ridiculous sometimes. If everyone would just mellow the fuck out and not be so god damned impatient, the world would be a better place.
