Spook holds everyone accountable for his angst.
Uh, while I do think he does this to some extent, seems like you should save your anger for a post where, uh, he actually does this to someone here? He was taking a jab at the place where 4matic worked, and the situation of random people there. It wasn't a jab at Skidog; it was barely a jab at 4matic. We all take jabs at random people we know nothing about, you do just as much as anyone else.

they are still people
i have been laid off a couple of times and it sucks
second, the guy doesn't fucking work, and pisses on people with jobs
he's an absolute loser and I will tee off on him to my hearts delight. i don't give one flying fuck about his trauma from upteen years ago
My real problem is the proposed move back to NY. The last job was remote aside from some site travel, so I would've been able to keep it and move back east (they are based in NYC). Now there really isn't a point getting a job in SLC. Just complicates the shit out of it all. I feel like I have to rush and sell the house now, but kinda need to wait til kids are out of school.
Have been talking to an ex co-worker who got laid off last year. He's getting his own gig off the ground. 3 clients in the bag so far. Might just start a consulting gig with him. We get along, both know our jobs, and work well together. Now I know a partnership makes it different, but I think it's time to give this a shot.
Thanks again for all the support mags...appreciated.

Man, I got laid off in 2008 and was stoked. For years I loved working in San Francisco, but always wanted to go fuck off, travel, and ski a few 100 day seasons. The layoff provided that, plus it helped that I worked 9 years saving for a house down payment, (which was about half of what I needed to buy a house in SF, but was plenty for travelling and living like a bum. Years down the road, I'm working for the same company that I used to, but now I have a wife, kid, and house, and nothing in cash at all in the short term. A layoff now would feel intense and scary.
Skidog, it doesn't sound like there are any drawbacks to starting the consulting with your buddy.
It's very scary as I don't have much cash reserves. 2 kids, 2 dogs, house. We stand to make $100k on house sale (about $55k is pure profit), but that's not til it sells.
Very much leaning to heading into biz with my buddy.

That sucks SkiDog, sorry you've got to deal with it. Good luck with whatever comes next.
I don't know many people that ever had their employment end favorably, it's always shitty. Goodbye parties are toast. I watched one my best friends be essentially walked out after 10 years and being the driving force from a company going from <$250K to $25 million. You get left behind by a changing company, they no longer meet your needs, or some combination of both. Just the way it is these days.
dude - I would get a remote position and work with your bud
I am working with a start up, it is really iffy and I don't consider it a job. i hope it works out, but I need a gig i get paid on time for what I work
i have quite a bit of time in the start up and no pay... the start up is trying not to sell equity for cash. I am not an owner, but hopefully a very large check will come in the relatively near future. maybe I will get some equity... I am not holding my breath
Regarding age. The best people I have hired were older. Maybe at startup they want that young vibe but I’d take old almost every time. I hired a woman five years out of the workforce in her forties. Freaking superstar..
I hired a guy in his mid 50’s who was petulant and stubborn but damn could he work.
I don’t see age as a deterrent if you are good at what you do.
Where it is gut wrenching is the guy in his 50’s with a brain disorder that has trouble communicating. I scraped him off the floor more than a couple times. The guy worked like a gd beaver but struggled to communicate. I worry about his future. I just gave a phone interview to a recruiter on his behalf.
Curious, What industry are you in? What type of roles are these folks doing for you?
24/7 staff. Network and applications global support. Tier 1 and 2.
that was part of it, part of it was also the nature of the work and the impacts their work has on other disenfranchised "stakeholders" who suffers as a result of those people "trying to feed their families." dbdude doesn't apparently know that the haves take from the have nots.
also, since you obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about, i have never received any social services paid for by those glorious worker bees who have no problem funding the world's largest military and prison system and corporate tax breaks.
cry me a river, bro. your life is a series of injustices.
