... lying near my house. No obvious sign of injury. What exactly does one do in this situation? I want it gone before decay sets in, and my dog decides to roll in it.

I had one that looked really sick so I took a pic of it and sent it off to the WA dept of Wildlife. They said "Yup, she looks bad and thanks for letting us know but we don't have the funding to do anything". Yeah, heard about that lack of funding thing. Anyhoo... I only reported it because I thought they might be tracking disease.

Found it a short time later totally desiccated - no animal had touched it. I'm guessing they all knew it wasn't fit to eat because there is not shortage of scavengers around these parts.

That's what I do with the ones that get hit around here - load them in the tractor and take them to the CRP for the coyotes and other scavengers.

A lot of dumps take livestock carcasses free of charge to stop the practice of ranch dead piles that in essence teach certain predators to eat domestic livestock. Unsure if you are far enough east..

Our dump takes horses fortunately I have enough land to bury mine. A nicer final resting spot IMO but I suppose it's all the same.

Like Omaha Steak!! I hate cleaning fish. I vote for dragging the corpse far enough into the bush and let nature do the work. Took about a year in the NE woodlands when I had a similar situation.

Put it in trashbag. Put out as trash.

I'd call the DNR to get approval before you move it into the trash in case you need a transportation tag, and your local trash agency to make sure they accept carcass's. I know here we can dispose of animals in the city trash system.

I would not transport it anywhere in your truck without some kind of a tranportation tag issued by your DNR.

Drag it onto the shoulder of your road. In WA, road maintenance or someone picks up the road kill on a regular basis. I have that around my house, a LOT.

My town has no legal means to dispose of something like a dead deer and because my property in inside NYC watershed it can't be buried either. A few years ago a deer was hit and ended up in a neighbors driveway and it ended up sitting in the road for weeks before he finally relented and paid over $1k to have it carted away by a private haz-mat company. He got fined by the health dept. and because all of the little kids on the street had to walk by it to get to the school bus the school district brought a civil suit against him for creating a health hazard for the students. When I had one in my front yard about 15 years ago I just dragged it to the empty lot at the corner and left it there, that's how we found out who owned the lot

It is technically illegal to bury animals here as well but it is still common for people to bury pets in the backyard.

Had one die in the trees next to my driveway. In our area animal control will remove dead animals on public roads, but not on private land. So I dragged it out to the road, then made the call.

Not in SE WA. They lay on the road until they rot and blow away.
