Ha ha! I think about that alot on long climbs. In reality though, the times I jump off the bike and push, I'd probably still be pushing an ebike. Only difference would be pushing a 50lb beast instead of my mildly heavy 33lb bike. Fuck that.
However many are in a shit ton.

I hate riding up the fire roads. I would rather ride single track up even if it means I walk some or stop and rest. Grinding up the road is boring, especially some of our roads that are really fucking steep.

Climbing gravel or pave sure beats shuttling tho. You want to slay that descent? Ride/push your lazy ass to the top and get fit. Driving up the Burke Mtn road to the top vs climbing and earning your upper Jbar? Pfft that road is a great climb. Same with Redtail area. Single track or pave. Pick your poison. Leave the truck with your cute dakine tailgate bro cover in the valley. /rant

Generally I agree... just don't do that on either of these rides.

This is a giant pile of horseshit.

I actually kind of like climbing fire roads... space out and let your mind wander (or shoot the shit with a friend) then focus on the descent. I have some friends who really get off on climbing single track but it’s never really been my thing, although I do enjoy trying to clear the occasional techy uphill section.

Thinking about Moab singletrack that should exist but doesn't, how about a Hymasa-style trail that climbs to the top of Portal? It would be pretty awesome to be able to ride Portal without shuttling or the massive suck that is climbing Poison Spider.

I'm with you. Singletrack is always preferable, but I'll happily climb dirt or paved road as long as there's a good trail to descend. Tunes help, especially on pavement.

Will I ride a pave or gravel road up? Hell yeah. Would I rather be on single track? Hell yeah. Will I take a lift to the top? Hell yeah. If no lift, will i ride? Hell yeah. Will I hike a bike if I have to? Hell yeah.

All will probably happen this weekend...well except the lift up. Not an option.

    ^^^^Nailed it.

Vastly prefer singletrack climbing but many of those trails tend to go along with the IMBA ethic, ie: too flat and meandering, boring, and take too long. Areas where they utilise existing fire roads/logging roads, regardless of grade tend to do so because the builders are focused on making fun descent trails. Makes sense to spend your valuable resources on fun descent trails. Also the roads tend to get you there in a hurry, even though they might be steep as balls.

A good techy singletrack climb is always welcome though.

Just look at the topo map - there's no room. Unless you built singletrack up on Poison Spider Mesa - which would quickly fill with sand and REALLY suck. Not sure if it would suck more/less/the same as the sand-filled jeep road.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer.

I just push up it now to ride it. It really is the best way to get to what you're after in life.

I don't think there's anywhere to build another route up but a human catapult that just chucks you up there could be good. Could also charge for bumps across the river so you don't have to drive into town to get 200ft away.

Yup. And I presume you mean just up to the platform where the trail turns and then traverses the Death Cliffs? I mean - there's no point, really, in riding that section if you're pushing your bike up, amirite?

Oh man if you think it's dangerous riding down to the corner, you should try pedaling up. All kind of good opportunities to fall off your bike at 0mph and then plunge to your death.

    Yeah just to the corner.

I totally understand and appreciate your perspective, and I think it’s great that different folks like different strokes. I do tend to find that a lot of people who relish the meandering climbs often haven’t had the downhill epiphany yet.

I prefer the fast and dirty fire road uphill as well. It's funny how people vary on this. almost 50/50 I'd say among friends
My SO loves the long single track meander though so I have learned to embrace it once in awhile

Yeah, but we all know Andrew can't ride for shit so what's your point?

In truth, my friends who are by far the best riders are the ones who really love the single-track up... so while I can almost keep up with them on the downhill these days I suspect I still have something to learn.

    Add me to that list.
That said, if there is a single track option (especially if it's in the shade on a hot day) I'm all in.
In our immediate area most of the stuff I ride is not accessible via singletrack, and riding up those trails is not an option (pretty steep and tech in a lot of places).

Won't argue on the pushing option. As to an up route, I was thinking of something that loosely follows Poison Spider. Hence the "Hymasa-style" comment. Seems like a bike trail should be doable if there's room for a jeep trail. Would be extra awesome if it could link to Blue Dot, too.

Seems like you could mark out a route that just sticks to rock and keeps you out of the sand. Maybe go out there one day armed with google overhead views and a gps and hand over a route to whatever moab's advocacy group is. They're obviously very pro expansion these days. On second thought, get someone with a moto to do it. I'd be pretty surprised if that wasn't something they've discussed/planned anyway. It's very energy zapping but the scenery up there is neat. Probably worth doing. In the meantime, I'll keep pushing up. Two laps is better than one anyway.
