    Varies from state to state, and while the law often states that fees are paid by each spouse separately, the reality is that fees for both parties are generally paid out of the marital estate, one way or the other. The marital estate consists of everything you accumulate during the marriage (with certain exceptions), minus the debts you incur as a married couple (including the attorney fees for the divorce and custody proceedings), up to the date of final decree of divorce.

    Women typically make less money than men, even while doing the same job so it would make sense men would be more likely to pay alimony more often.
