OpenSnow throwing out the idea that similar hurricane set-ups between 2010 and 2017 could lead to a similar winter to 10-11. Is this fantasy? Yes. Am I rock hard? Yes.

Joel et al are in the hype business. The only useful info in that article was this:
"Paying attention to a 1-10 day forecast is the way that you'll find powder. A 6-month outlook like this offers little to no planning value for folks like us who are searching for pow."

Does anyone know when the Truckee or Sacramento ski swaps are? I'm in the market for xc and skate skis setups. I'll be towing my kid around Royal Gorge with a pulk on my dad day and skiing Sugar Bowl on my funday if iI'm inbounds.

The Tahoe XC swap in Tahoe City is billed as "California's Largest XC Swap" Historically, mid November.

For xc gear, we've tried to get it all at the truckee swap and fill in the missing gaps at the TC swap as a backup.

I went to the Sac State once--absolutely nothing worth looking at. Maybe it's better now.
Truckee is Nov 4th, according to google.
North Tahoe--does that still exist? I think it's been petering out the last few years. Last year it was at Homewood as a Ski Swap and Pumpkin Festival. (I usually just get my pumpkins at Safeway, don't want anyone's used pumpkin.)
I think the best deals these days are the Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend parking lot sales at the ski shops. Plenty of used gear as well as new.

Keep an eye on Craigslist too. I'm sort of in the market for used skate gear as well, and was idly browsing CL last season and saw stuff for decent deals.

Sports Basement's used gear sale at our local location last December had TONS of XC gear. Not sure what they'll still have because I bet they're moving out of XC lines, given the leftovers they were selling. New old stock Salomon boots for $5 a pair (so got classic and skate for me, skate for wife, and some for my parents). Carbon skate poles for like $20. Insanity. Their garage sales are different than REI. REI does returns from a given location and sells at that location. SB trucks all their stuff from a given quarter's worth of returns at ALL their stores to one location. I actually like it better than REI. More selection.

Andy's at it again--shedding crocodile tears over the death of patroller Joe Zuiches and telling Moonshine Ink that it's wrong to write a story about Cal-OSHA fining Squaw for safety violations because it reopens a painful tragedy for "the team". (Cal-OSHA did not find that the violations caused the death.) Give me a fucking break.

I am in no way implying that Squaw caused the death. No one knows what caused the death. Most obvious explanation is trying to relight an already lit fuse, but that is pure, baseless speculation on my part.*

*Protocol for an apparent fuse going out is to leave the charge, return in an hour, and explode the charge with a second charge. One can see that it might be tempting to try to relight if you thought erroneously that the fuse had gone out, rather than delay opening an area with skiers and management screaming to get it open. Again, purely baseless speculation on my part. Trying to relight a lit fuse was the cause of a patroller death at Big Sky some years ago--the bigger problem there being 2 rookies doing a route on Big Couloir by themselves. Lack of experience was obviously not the problem in the Squaw incidient.

What's the maggot community consensus on advocating for uphill access around Tahoe? As someone who's up off 431 5ish days a week, I thought all of last spring about trying to work with Rose to get some kind of before hours uphill policy going. I figured there were people with more experience and in a better position to advocate than I am. I think we'd all write off getting someone like tahoe area vail resorts to play ball, but with diamond peak and sugarbowl having policies, makes me think that smaller areas like rose and s@t might be willing to play ball.

Well, got a Vail pass this year for Heavenly, Kirkwood primarily and looking for advise or ideas on short term and spur of the moment lodging at Kirkwood. This would be weekdays on storm and powder days where the decision to go would be within a day or two. So, no reservation ahead of time and probably just a overnite or sometimes two nites. I guess we don't live that far away, but having a extra day or two with the tough drive with closures would be helpful for us. Us, meaning a couple. Would pay cash for someone who has a long term rental and not there at the time would work. So......

Yeah I hear ya. As a dude with a job, tamarack and hourglass just don't have the kind of vert you could get skinning the slide side. I'm thinking junk days when everything is gonna be firm, and I just want to get in 3k vertical and be at work at 9a.m. Realizing that's probably not much demand, as I type that...

If they closed to uphill traffic when doing snow control, it'd mitigate the situation you're describing

Car camping probably your best bet if you are storm chasing. Snopark and Casino lots will have you covered for places to sleep at night and showers can be had for a small fee at the local gyms in south lake.
