Hell's up with the US Navy? Another ship collision. 10 sailors missing.

Are they practicing autonomous operation warships now? Two warship collisions in two weeks??? WTF?

Collisions happen and usually minor. When they are bad people die, news media is like a pit bull on grandma.

The damage done to the military by the previous years presidential forced social engineering is manifesting itself.

Vibes to friends and family of those affected.

Strait of Malacca is about the most crowded sea lane on the planet. Mariners I know describe transiting it as a white-knuckle nightmare. That said, a destroyer is ridiculously maneuverable and should have an adequate watch. This happened at night. Do the midwatch lookouts not have night vision goggles as standard wear?

From looking at the damage on the left side our ship may have had the right of way this time.

And yes, this area is packed with traffic.

Well, compared to the other armed forces, the Navy does have a bit of a reputation. NTTAWWT.

But to be fair, the skies are pretty crowded in some areas too, and you rarely hear of a F-16 being taken out by a Fedex plane.

In crowded airspace, aircraft are actively managed into traffic patters by ground controllers.

This doesn't happen in busy sea lanes.

Actually, in uncrowded airspace, the aircraft are still controlled by ground controllers. Only Class G airspace which is a thin layer of airpspace near the ground are aircraft not under ATC control. That is why 78% of midairs happen around small towerless airports in class G airspace.

Oh yea... and aircraft can maneuver in 3D to avoid a collision.

Oh also, aircraft have TCAS which is a collision alarm system that operates off their transponders.

One would think that if we have the technology to locate bluefin tuna that we would have some combination of technology on our warships to locate and avoid something far larger?

I still work in the service of our nation and have watched morale decline badly in recent years in both civilian and service sectors, it has nothing to do phobia of anything. The readiness of the military is at an all time low. The abilities of the individual sailor, soldier, marine and airman have kept the country protected but pool has become very dilute.

It pains me to see service people perish be it war or peace. Accidents do happen contrary to what some people think and yes that area of sea is very congested.

This country has been at war since before 9/11 but for most it is business as usual. Later today I will be back at the switch protecting your ungrateful asses, especially those of you so quick to use the F word and label others.

    Enjoy your eclipse party people.

What evidence do you see for a decline in morale? At what levels? Why do you think this is happening? To be clear, I'm not challenging your assessment. I'm genuinely curious. As a long time educator, I'm familiar with myriad ways in which politicians' failures to understand the culture and intricacies of schools has lead to destructive and expensive policies which they declare to be a glowing success. They even present bullshit test data to back up their claims. Politicians on all sides will implement "school reform" that ignores decades of research and expertise if it serves their personal agenda. It's easy to imagine how the same sort of thing happens with the military.

That said, I think you can probably understand how your words "forced social engineering" could set off some alarms. Why not explain what you meant, rather than leave us to assume you think soldiers are no longer combat ready because they are now overwhelmed by a fear (or desire) of dropping their soap in the shower, or that jumping out of an airplane can damage a woman's ovaries?

The pool has become dilute because a) the initial surge of patriotism after 9/11 has died down, especially after a useless war was started in Iraq and after two administrations have fucked up both Afghanistan and Iraq--it's getting harder to find people who think joining the military is actually protecting the country. b) the improving economy in much of the country since the great recession has given people more options besides joining the military--so in a sense it is Obama's fault. I suppose we could spend more on troop salaries and other incentives but we already spend as much on defense as the next 8 countries combined.

Should we invest more in accident preventation technology for ships? I guess it depends on how often it happens--two collisions in a short period of time are a coincidence, not a trend--and whether the money is justified. If the military wants to save lives preventing helicopter crashes might be a better place to start. Or in civilian life--technology to prevent train crashes exists but is not being deployed.

Meanwhile spare us the holier than thou attitude--real warriors don't go around boasting how they are protecting us all.

Blacks sailors were forced social engineering when they were moved up from being waiters in the officers mess. You should write your congressman. With all of the fake news about lefties disrespecting the military some were bound to believe it eventually. An all volunteer service has a downside. You should start a PA thread, Scotty.

Stay tuned. For the last collision, the pros on the site suggested too many steps from spotter to whee lman in the Navy and no way to communicate with civilian sailors.
