"One season per year, the gods open the skies, and releases a white, fluffy, pillow on top of the most forbidding mountain landscapes, allowing people to travel over them with ease and relative abandonment of concern for safety. It's incredible."
Looked hard for a '94-'97 a few years back. Ran across a two-owner in green and grey with 30k original miles for $18k. Thought it was a strong price at the time. Should have bought it.
I'd put a deposit on a relaunched hard body tomorrow if Toyota USA would import the damn things.
Post details.
Just gotta pass this on. I have had a '94 FZJ for three and a half years. Bought it with 130k, now up to 173k. It has ARB front and back, it's got a 3" lift, and it's on 33's. I was driving all over Indian Valley Reservoir last week, on off road trails. Little bit of bass fishing. Came up the boat ramp at the end of the reservoir, drove through a campground, and found myself on the wrong side of a "campground closed" gate. The sun was going down, and I didn't want to drive those trails in the dark. There was a road around the gait, but Forest Service had put 18"+ boulders all over the exit. I opted to crawl the boulders. Built up the backside with rocks, and took it really slow. Slid a little on the backside, tagged the rear bumper and trailer hitch. An hour later, I'm doing 70mph on I505. What other car can you do that in??

A few people feel the rain. Most people just get wet.
What say you guys on this one?
I like it, but is that rust underneath a killer?
I'm pretty persuasive, but I know for a fact I can't sell the wife on a frame off restoration down the road no matter how cool the car.

Probably not fun to work on but the rust could be worse. Dash and instrument cluster look a little suspect.
Have an acquaintance who went to a pretty badass automotive engineering school. His off road rig of choice is the Lexus lx470. Electric locking diffs. Real flexy. Super reliable.
Head over to IH8mud.com and do some reading. This was my go-to source for all things LC when I bought my 100, and still is.
I'm no expert but that seems a little high for an 80 series price-wise. Rust looks like surface mostly. If that's your price point you can probably find a 100 (for the V8), and for a few shekels more you can upgrade to a 2003+for the V8 and 5 speed auto.
Problem with the LX is the AHC, and I didn't care for all the extra chrome on them when I was looking.
If that thing is on decent shape I would think someone would be willing to pay 12k for that low mileage and factory lockers. Rare beast with those miles...
sigless.
In Kalifornia, that rig could be listed for north of 15K.
Your dog just ate an avocado!
Add a turbo.

Brain dead and made of money.
Should be nationwide, cause someone who really is after the rare low miles cars should be looking nationwide. I was looking within a 1000mi radius for my cruiser, expecting to do a fly and buy, but got lucky and snagged a local one. Beer drinker might have some tips on shipping cars. I paid $800 to have a BMW wagon sent out from California to Utah a couple years ago for my old man.

That '94 is pretty nice. Pricing-wise, probably a good deal. The rust isn't bad and the worst parts are on the cat shields anyway.
For true groupies, the '94 with lockers is a unicorn. It has a beefier transmission than '95-97. The '95-97 trans are well up to the task and electronically controlled. The '94 is a transmission they used to put in buses and will never ever break. 116k for mileage is LOW but I'd rather have one with complete maintenance records. The head gasket is the culprit in these when the PHH blows and coolant spews out of the bottom end. If that PHH has been changed out with the proper style hose and clamps, you've got a bulletproof motor that will go 300k no problem with semi-regular maintenance.
At some point in it's lifespan, you'll probably have to clean out (or bypass) the EGR. Bypass is probably the best solution but federally illegal. They'll never catch you with the proper resistor in the plug though. Not that I know or have ever done anything like this. I've never understood EGRs...why make your engine eat its own farts... And you'll probably have to replace O2 sensors to keep the CEL off.
Thanks for the info. I had to google PHH and was taken right to ih8mud.
Right. Trust me I'm originally from NE Ohio where a car with "some" rust will likely be a swiss cheese lookin mess of about-to-be-dust on the side of the highway in no time at all.
I'd rather avoid it entirely and aren't sure if these chassis are more prone to car cancer than others (see Tacoma frames from years ago).

1994 FJ80 with a 3" lift. Can I fit 37s? What if I got to backspaced rims and do some trimming? Will eventually regear but not right away. Have a brand new matched set of 37"x12.5r17 Maxxis Trepadors Radials that want to go on a vehicle.
Probably but you might get some rub. Here's a good article:
http://www.sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_35.htm
The heavy OME lift (850/863) will net you 3" before you start putting extra steel and gear in it. I've been running 315/75-16s on an OME extra heavy 418/864 lift which nets about 5" as my vehicle sits. I only rub after a tire comes off the ground moving fast.
