7 inches in the last 24 at Squaw... they send the email out at 7am every day. They should probably move that up to 6:30 considering during busy weekends you now have to leave Truckee by 7 sharp.

Is that still the case at this point? I was planning on arriving around 8:30 in two weeks. I just assumed that it would be quite by May. Especially as how KW claims no one likes to ski in spring time.

Maybe memorial day weekend. Last Sunday, which was a great spring day, squaw was very uncrowded from the parking lot through granite chief.

    ^^^ not surprising at all
We woke up at 6 to get after the 6-8" that fell yesterday but snow quality here at 7,700' deteriorated massively from mank to ultra mank overnight. Plug pulled

Did not open Upper Mountain at Squaw. Kt was good if you got shit that wasn't rubble . But by 11 it was getting sticky where the sun hit it. Squaw was claiming "weather". I think they just laid off a bunch of employees.

I think that is damn smart snow management. Let the sun and winds hit it and buff that shit out and then there will be smooth skiing for weeks instead of hours.

I don't think it was a plan, vis was crap and would have made the upper mtn snow...challenging. I saw they opened Shirley late. Hopefully that's all and the rest gets a freeze tonight

Don't have a clue about layoffs but I know they have trouble keeping people around this late in the season as everyone has moved on to fishing or summer jobs or whatever. Sounds like most jobs are only contracted through like mid-April at the beginning of the season as Easter onward is a crapshoot dependent on snow.

I took off in a torrential downpour yesterday to spend the summer interning in the bay. Were there bombs going off this morning?

    Rose today was like this:

albeit sans smokey voiced DJ and vengeful, leprous pirates.

Snow quality was interesting, to say the least. Some wet 'n heavy fresh up high, which quickly became boot-deep wet cement.
Found a coupla runs of compacted speed corn on the outskirts of the "Zephyr" run (straddling the boundary line) as well as some pretty-damn-close-to-skiable powder on the front side, again on the boundary (way past "Kit Carson").

Visibility (or lack thereof) was easily the biggest obstacle of the day...sun didn't start poking through until after 1pm, but by then most of the runs and off-piste were cooked.

People also lose their housing--as winter ski leases run out and the houses start renting by the week. (How many lift ops can cram into a 3 BR house? The guy next to me was renting to resort workers every winter; every spring he would have to untrash the place. He finally learned his lesson and rented to a family, only to have the snow and rain trash his place.)

Do houses rent for a week at a time in May? Seems unlikely. Why not extend the lease another month if asked? Just curious, as it seems like you'd rent one or two weekends at best in May. Especially when there is snow on the ground and other activities are non in yet.

Does anyone know if Squaw has closed down Red Dog for the season, or if it will continue to run on weekends? My son was laying out his Squaw plans, but we might not be able to get there until Memorial Day at this point.

The fog was crazy thick at Rose. Yesterday was easily the most challenging day visibility wise I've experienced this past winter. I kept thinking it would lift or we would punch thru it, but it was still hanging around at noon when we left.
The new snow was interesting to say the least, but deep enough in spots for a few fresh turns. Hard to complain about a May pow day.

Red dog was spinning today. Actually pretty much most of the lifts were still spinning. Need a good freeze though because anything not getting a lot of skis turning on it was a glue fest

Nice rapid fire session on the chimney this morning too. 6 consecutive sweepers. It looks a lot spicier than it did a couple weeks ago

Hoping it gets colder tonight but I'll be at Squaw tomorrow and probably Wednesday if anyone is around. Or I'd be up for a tour as well.

Thanks for the beta. Website listed only KT, Funitel and Tram on schedule when I looked yesterday.

Mothership closed may 9 last season if my memory serves me right, so that's good to hear it's still going strong.

And that does sound like clean up on red dog if it was spinning but not loading. But who cares right? I'm assuming paulsons and the other off piste stuff has gone to shit by now, so what's the point of having it run just for Champs when KT and the upper mountain are still doing fine.

Makes sense. My kiddo just enjoys riding different lifts.

We were up there soon after KT closed and it was burnt out at the bottom. I imagine they will keep KT spinning through Memorial Day as long as you can ski all the way back to the lift.

Despite the warm temps it's impressive how much snow is still up top. The funnel choke is still completely covered and just looks like a 50 yard wide run down to Shirley. Granite Peak was also nice... only hiked up once as the snow was pretty sticky by 10:30 or so. Patrol keeps opening the Palisades hike for an hour or so each morning.

It is kind of crazy how much snow has settled into the gut of Sibo and flattened it out. And main chute was noticeably less steep as well after the initial drop in. I wish there had been more clouds, though.

Good corn today with somethingclever on the way from CP to KW. Instant corn after that last storm. S side of Round Top is still plenty fat.
