I would quit skiing if I had to wait in that line. It really makes me appreciate 395 as the road in and out of Mammoth. The 88 sucks even worse. I was three cars behind a head on a few weeks ago. There is no where for the people to go but off the bank and into the other lane. How that road doesn't just accordion shut is also beyond me. The 80 was easier but out of the way.

How much does the population grow in Tahoe over the weekends? It seems like you can still go out to eat on Saturday, whereas Mammoth is a junk show. Does Vons just get wrecked like Mammoth? I am sure there are ways around the traffic and this may have been an anomaly since it was Sunday night and snowing. I am asking in case I decide to move closer for my kid to play hockey. After last night I think living in the Valley would be a better option.

In the meantime, despite freeway closure, a certain other resort has their two most important lifts spinning...

If someone could make a jacket of those three things it would no doubt be the most popular and prized item in all of your closets.

The stores (2 raleys 2 safeway, Gross out, and now smart n final) don't get too bad. The lines at the South Lake Safeway can get long and they don't seem to care. I would say yesterday was an anomaly, but it's one of many this year. This year is an anomaly though.
There used to be ways for us to get around traffic but no more with the different map apps. Now tourist take the side streets and snafu them too so we can't get to work or home.
One thing that was different yesterday was the whiteout conditions on the passes. Even when they opened traffic barely moved.

    ...mumble mumble...
Mount DoubleStory is developing outside upper floor deck.
We reopened the Pass to lower bedroom last night.
But there is still danger from falling Seracs and increased avalanche activity

So glad I turned back home at the gas station by my house in Reno today and got some more sleep. Doing b.c. tomorrow. Fuck these dysfunctional resorts. Alpine should be awesome on Wednesday. No chance they do better than a super late opening on Summit and Scott with no hikes (Stay in the breezeway! Now run all panicky to lineup at the gates!, Now barge through in a stampede and line up in line! Now line control!). Squaw will be good but a goddamn shit show manana.

Deepest Snow I've ever skiied yesterday. I bet today is killer for those who made it and chose wisely. The wind might do some work to all that lovely fluff though

Turx - as someone who spent a season in that condo, that is just fucking crazy. I mean, it's pretty downhill on that side so if anything the snow just falls away from the deck. Wow.

Agree. Much prefer moving into a corn cycle with a weekly refresh of a few inches of light snow and single monthly overnight dump of 20".

I've driven 88 over a 100 times in storms. It is not so bad. Be smart, once in a caravan give space. Arrive early, leave early. Slow for the black ice turn coming down to Silver when heading toward the Spur. Be ware of pinball alley when venturing over the Pass. Done.

    Windy? Or people?

I can recall taking that chair in plenty of storms with my arm wrapped around the chair. This was pre safety bar. That last stretch by the yellow tower can get sketch.

Not people! Every other chair was loading empty. It was a pretty well behaved group trapped in the valley over the weekend.

The chair was swinging sideways so that you almost worried about clipping tips on the liftline posts. The wind at the top was so strong you had to tuck to have a chance to get away from the chair. Visibility at zero, but who needs to see anything when it's deep and smooth?

They were apparently on wind hold too.

I'll be up later in the week, sadly.

Breezy but fun at Sierra today. Deep in the wind sheltered trees.
