Dang they need locals only access in South Lake too. I appreciate that my many friends who live there need to get to work, school or daycare when it's snowing!

They've definitely been letting people with Truckee / TC addresses through on 80 from Reno sometimes during these last few storms. The only people I know who did it weren't really in a line of cars - there were people being turned around at the nearest exit and when they came up they asked for info (when do you think it'll re-open?) and the CHP guy asked if they lived over there, so they showed ID and he said go ahead just take it slow. If CHP is projecting a longer closure they typically won't just have people sit there if they can help it.
I haven't heard of this happening east bound over DP, however.
We had that experience coming up from Verdi last year. CalTrans chain control at Gold Run, turning most people around. We said we were going back home to Squaw. They waved us through.
Years and years back, we pilfered a "Northstar Local" pass off my parents (old-school Northstar logo on a window decal). Still have it in the glove box, but not at all sure it would work.
Recco is such a scam. I heard that the technology is sound and if people are trained that it can be as fast as a beacon.
Unfortunately Recco did not do much to train patrollers. At Heavenly, patrollers first do a beacon search and then a Recco. That pretty much says it all.
TR up from last weekend. Warning, its a bit personal for me, but it was a pretty great day for me after a great (and intense) last year. Its good to be back on skis.

Ugh, today was frustrating. Didn't have class today so had a crew leave the bay area at 5:30 for a day trip to Kirkwood. About halfway there, the spur closes. Ended up just grabbing bfast at Cooks station and driving back. Talked to some Caltrans workers coming off their night shift and they said they were having issues with their blowers, so they couldn't push back the snow that far and the road was down to just a single lane. Kinda sucks, but that's life.
That said, I'm looking forward to moving back to SLC this summer where Collins/Wildcat never stops spinning.
Was just going off what someone else said earlier... so maybe there isn't one as far as I know, although it kind of looks like there's at least a bit of a concave at the bottom causing snow to stack up fast. Whatever the case, glad they got him out okay. Definitely makes me feel like less of a dork for occasionally carrying gear inbounds on a deep day even when I have no intention of exiting.
A guy I work with is planning on buying some studded snows. He has an 08-12 (somewhere in that range) subie impreza and he currently has 17's on there so I wasn't sure if the size change would be a big deal.
On another note. Flatstar was deep and untouched all morning. Just line after line of mellow tree ripping pow. Little pillowy stumps and bent over trees to play around on.
if memory serves, the slope angle below notch shoot at kirkwood mellows out just below the cliff. there could be wind-generated features there that could create a terrain trap, i suppose. lucky.

powdork.com - new and improved, with 20% more dork.
Need to make sure the brakes clear the rims. I don't think that's an issue w/ base Impreza, but could be an issue for Turbo. My FXT won't fit 16" rims due to brake clearance ... with 17's on there it has a very small amount of clearance.
Bolt patterns are all the same, total diameters were mostly the same with minor changes, and offsets are close enough to generally not be an issue. From my very limited experience w/ my 96 Impreza, 09 Forester, 16 FXT.

all right caltrans district 10........think we can get at least carson pass open this afternoon? I'm sending mental energy that way
The trick is to have the number to the maintenance yard on 88....
Am I incorrect in my recollection that the first time I saw Tram face it was 100% snow, no rocks in sight? It was Feb. '93.
I liked how caltrans website, quickmap and phone didn't say anything about pass being closed at 7:40 am and then around 9 only to drive 89 to 88 to chp closure.
In my view the caltrans website has become cryptic with regard to 88 eastbound from Kirkwood.
