Yikes! That's crazy. Scary not knowing who could have been below.

I'm sitting out tomorrow. Back strain is better but still dodgy. Starting to feel mortality at 44 y.o. (I used to have a back of steel!) I have a feeling tomorrow is gonna be a late opening shit show everywhere.
Curious to hear reports on how deep it skis. Have fun and don't get dead!

I see all these pics of huge berms and snowblowers and smile knowing I've had to remove a whopping total of 4 inches of snow from my house in NW Reno. Location! Location! Location!

Stay safe. Just enough steep to manage the snow at gnarstar today, plenty of refills for all 200 of us. EZ. 5 hr trek home to SLT. Via RNO. Luther was having naturals on the opposite side of WH/PH ,& all over the place, we are lucky that road was even open. Not EZ. Look out for your roofs let alone the BC. Most GIANT bermage!
I'm cool with this, as long as you Kirkwood Bro Brah's stay away from Heavenly when 88 closes- TahoeBc

Greydon motherfucking Clark!!! Been too long man

I read that powderhouse slide report on sac and as soon as I saw crown depths of 1' it lost any semblance of seriousness. You are out skiing steep enough to slide terrain in the middle of a monster fucking storm. It's just the slough of the loose light snow on top. The layer that you wipe off of a compression test. There's almost always energy on top during a storm. If the crown was 3'-5', that would be the new raincrust/ new snow interface, and cause for concern. Which by the way, I couldn't get to budge at all today on compression and the shear was as dirty as we hope to see. New snow is right side up and bonded well. Skied beautifully. If there is something take away from powder house slide, it's that many of our common up tracks around here are not as safe as they could be. Jakes north and flagpole are 2 others that come to mind.

Gnarstar was definitely a blast today .. maybe a piss poor decision to open at all seeing as how most people got stranded but still an insanely fun day of tree skiing. As an east coast transplant this is probably one of the most exciting nights of my life. I knew it could snow like this out here but to finally see it after 4 years of sub par shit is such an awesome feeling.

I agree with Toby that the 1' crown on PH is not especially worrisome. I have routinely knocked off slough that has little crowns like that on PH. However, it has never IME run farther than 100'. 1' running almost top to bottom could have really hurt someone.

But seriously, who thought skiing anywhere in the backcountry was a wise choice today?

yeah toby that was me. the 1 foot crown wasn't that impressive i only mentioned in the report because it was weird that it was the same across the entire face. i am familiar with sloughs. this wrapped around 150 yards to the skiers right. additionally, another slide started about 15' in front of me about 10 seconds after i had come to a stop. we thought it would be the standard pocket that fails and then stops after 50' but it ran from top to bottom and buried a skin track that started off going to lookers right from the get go.
We couldn't get the rain crust to go either although it got slushy in some spots. We focused too much on that problem of the forecast in my opinion..

I've got some video coming but the power just came back on

edit- and based on what i just shoveled while the power was off this whole thing just got really top heavy. specifically those thinking about firebreak. might be one of those cases where low elevation puts you right in the danger.

Sorry for my armchair quarterbacking there and perhaps slough wasn't the right explanation. I was just trying to point out that when you are backcountry skiing in the middle of a 4-6" an hour storm, it's commonplace for the top light layer to move when if hasn't had even one night to settle and bond. That's why sac puts out extreme and high ratings during storms that will move to considerable the next day.
Sorry to say there's freezing rain falling at 7,500' right now top kbury and the blower on top has become snowball snow

looks like more blower on the radar, but i think there are going to be some terrifically great, fantastic, i mean the best slides tomorrow. i'd be more wary than today, and we probably shouldn't have been out today. We had an original plan and then exceeded it. We stopped when we felt things were getting unsafe and that's really already too late.
i'm trying to edit video but i'm starting to thing the video editor is what's causing the power outages. i hit save and boom. no power

Looks like the snow stake at Kirkwood first had all the snow blown off, now it looks like its been buried. Hard to tell with the light, but looks like snow level on the ground is all the way up to the platform.

edit: speaking of, coop's post from 6am today:
This being said, SR88 over the Carson Pass and Spur are closed with NO ETO… Spoke to Cal Trans this AM and they have advised a lengthy (mid-day or longer) delay on the Pass and NO ETO on the SPUR.
#Safety is our number one concern as 36” to 48” of snow falling in the past 24hrs and our initial report of 36” to 40” yesterday was accurate. This is a 48hr total at the summit of 88” or 7’…

Bummer for those who went storm chasing and are getting skunked. That's a real cock tease right there. Hopefully things get sorted out by tomorrow.

Anyone heard any updates on when some of the power in Truckee might return? Looks like a full on cluster-fuck with entire substations out of commission.

Checked that 80 was closed this morning. With that fact and these reports it looks like a work day for me.

CHP says 80 will be closed "through this evening"

It's snowing big fat cold flakes in truckee. Probably 2-3" per hour
