Im surprised that the deep slab avi's in the BC have been so shallow. Without seeing obs, i would have expected the rain crust to generally be deeper.
Parkmeister, thanks for the vid stoke!
I think most resorts are closed. Also, 431 just closed thanks to another slide across it... Good times out there. I'm going to suit up and go for a run.
ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.
Damn
Was just going to post about those wind speeds. Remote sensors at the top of Alpine and Squaw in agreeement of +/- 175mph gusts.
SchralphMacchio, that area on Jakes is where the skin track usually comes up, if I'm not mistaken. The gully system just to the north is usually an area of caution, but I agree that most people would look at this area in the trees and consider it "safe". Obviously not so...

Perhaps this rain event will be a blessing if it can penetrate all the new snow depth to break down the rain crust and facets around it. If that happens in addition to locking up the snowpack till spring, and we do indeed get another 4' after the rain, we should be sitting pretty
Or am I just dreaming and the snowpack will remain a dangerous mess for the foreseeable future?
already turning to snow at 7,500' at 2pm top kingsbury
So . . . has anybody ever lost a toe pin on their tech binding? Is it easily replaceable? I showed up to the trailhead yesterday and it was gone, which, all things considered, was pretty fortunate. I would have been screwed if it had failed on my last bc tour.
Second question, anybody worried about their roof under this load? I've got about 4' of snow on a flat spot, and all that snow is absorbing the rain (and now snain).
Got bored sitting around hoping the snow levels will drop so I grabbed the boy and we headed to downtown It's quite a scene down here. People, cops, press and EMS everywhere. The Truckee is flowing! Shot these at Wingfield Park and in front of Reef Sushi.

When was your place built? If it was pre 82/82 I wouldn't let it stack up much more than that before taking the shovel to it. If it was constructed after that, building codes were enforced a little better and the framing is probably more up to task. I work as an engineer, so feel free to pm me with any more in-depth questions.
That is a good spring runoff. Shit.
Looks like less of a big deal than hyped. Another good thing is the southern sierra were relatively rain free today and should get the brunt of this AR after the snow levels come down and save some of the low snow they just received.
we didn't lose much snow in truckee. maybe 4-6" of compression?
Depends where you are. Looks like Truckee River in Reno may still hit 13', which is what was called for all week.

In Truckee it may stay below 8'

Yosemite may have possibly averted total disaster (we'll see how it is by the end of the week), looks to stay below road levels but both Pines campgrounds may suffer serious damage. Hopefully no permanent utility damage. Compared to the 23' forecast a couple of days ago, this is a much better scenario.

For Bay Area, East Bay had underwhelming precip but very impressive wind.

Watching the creek rise on KW's creekcam. Hopefully that's a sign the rain is getting deep into the snowpack. Though my limited experience digging in snow (snow caves) suggests rain often travels along the layers rather than percolating down. Shralph? anyone?
Snow doesn't seem to be melting at least.
