What are some must-haves for insert-drillings beyond the drill bit, template, and inserts themselves...

4" drywall screws make an awesume centerpunch, its just putting some screws in a chunk of wood its not like you are doing dental implants

Tolerance for repetitive tasks. And a high tolerance for Vibra-tite fumes.

A drill stop would be a good idea. A ghetto way to make one is use your insert bit to drill a hole the long way through a wine cork, then modify the position of the bit in the chuck of the drill to ensure that the amount of bit exposed is the correct length.

Inserts don't tolerate mistakes well so it may be worth buying some sort of drill guide.

Good epoxy is also a good idea. That Hardman stuff is nice and convenient due to the single use packages.

You also need a tap to make the threads in the drilled hole. Insert threads aren't self tapping so you will be SOL without a tap. Use your drill guide to make sure your threads are perfectly vertical.

I'm sure there is something else I'm missing but read a couple different "How-Too" articles and try to develop a system based off that.

A countersink may also be a good idea, or just a sharp utility knife. Do this PRIOR to tapping threads, otherwise it makes it damn difficult to get the insert into the tapped threads.

Mounted a pair of kingpins, fks and axial 3. Got cocky on my wifes moments and skipped drawing the center line down the ski and mounted one ski just off center. Pissed me off so epoxied tognar wooden plugs with 3 day epoxy, chiseled the holes flush after 3 days and sanded. Sealed with epoxy and redrilled for a perfect mount with bomber fixation. Lesson learned don't skip a step.

Thanks, I'll probably buy the necessities rather than jerry-rig em to be safe.

Mounted my first pair of bindings without an official binding jig (I used to turn screws in a shop in HS and college). I'll post steps/tools used in a bit.

Next up are my wife's skis. Regarding woman's skis, how are people mounting boot/ski center-wise for woman's specific skis (Volkl Aura)? The skis have a boot-center line and then +1 and +2 lines. Are the lines already women specific and the "plus" are like what you have on some men's skis (e.g. For park stance).

I know it's a lot about preference, but is there any standard for the multiple lines on women's specific skis?

No problem. Good luck getting it done. The other thing I forgot to mention is to count the turns of the tap to know when to quit. Sometimes when you hit a metal layer it'll feel a bit different and make you think you're already done. It's been a while since I've done inserts but I believe 4.5 turns gets you to the bottom of the hole. Look into that rather than taking my word.

When I sold a lot of Aura's in our shop, we would almost always mount on the line. The line on Volkl's women skis is specific to ski. The only reason to go +1 or +2 is for a preference. Don't over think the suggested line.

Thanks for that. You're right, I was overthinking it.

I'm sure somewhere in the last 1200+ posts I could find the answer to this, but...: is it common practice to put something in the screw holes to help prevent the screws from loosening (like loctite or something similar)?

I have titebond 3. I've heard wood glue as a suggestion, so I'm glad to hear it again.

Epoxy sounds a bit aggressive...? Also - I don't have any. And since I'm posting in the mount your own fucking bindings thread, you probably already know I'm friggin' cheap.

I have a different outlook. The satisfaction of a perfect mount and knowing it was done right vs a potentially shitty mount and being out cash. The time doing it is therapeutic. Investing in the correct drill bit with a stop and #3 posi driver drivers pays for itself time and time again.

The satisfaction is +1. For SLC mags I have a Jiga-Rex with plates for Vipec, Salomon STH10 and Salomon STH 2-WTR13

No speed records were in jeopardy during this mount. But it's done.

I've mounted several pairs, but this was by far the hardest and scariest due to the lack of templates. Confusingly, the heels on both ended up slightly off center, which is grating on me, but I'm pretty sure they'll ski fine.

that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...

Slightly off at the heel is way off by the time you reach the tail.
Bring them to a shop, people.
