Yep. In the trees skiers right side of Ruthie's a little ways downhill from the unloading area of chair 6.

Incorrect. It was an observation of people that as usual is true. People don't like being categorized or labeled but we scientists do that. Insulting people is what low intelligence folks do.

Nope. 500mb vorticity is where it's at. 100mb is typically around 45000'. There isn't much going on at that altitude that affects us down here.

I'm not sure if we have a Slide Zone Thread for Colorado but here we go...

Please try and make good decisions! You don't need any type of advanced skills to read to avalanche report and figure out that it is really quite dangerous out there currently. I really though we had turned the corner is this part of the world towards a culture of safety and conservative choices is the backcountry. The incidents year to date and the weather forecast concern me.

    Be Safe!

    +1

Read "Staying Alive..." before the season kicks off. Read the NOAA weather discussion. Check CAIC before heading out. Dig a hasty pit. Use common sense, patience and communicate with your group. None of this requires advanced training.

Put me in the category of "Level 1 led to safer decisions".

I took my L1 20 years ago in Silverton. Don't remember a shitton of the technical details, and probably could use another one (have taken a couple of FOBP refreshers). So I have no confidence in my ability to dig a pit and truly evaluate through testing whether a particular slope is safe to ski. But I know how to evaluate whether a slope if 30+ degrees, I know how to read an avy forecast, I know how to look at the terrain and see traps and other signs of danger, I know how to see signs of snow instability. Mostly, this keeps me off steeper slopes all winter, but I'm ok with that.

At least while the kids are in ski school, I made the call to just drive over the night before and shell out for a lodge room at Snow Mountain Ranch (we ski at Winter Park). Will probably do this more through the season, as well. I can handle dragging my own ass out of bed in the middle of the night to get a decent (and free) parking spot and a shot at untouched snow. Dragging the whole fam just chips away at my soul.

Damn, that beats taking a refresher (if one didn't have to pay for lodging, that is). Hopefully, someone fills the slots.

Thanks for the heads up, summit, but life with a kindergartener is pretty damn complicated.

why waste the money on a Level1? CO has forecasters. Just wait for the forecast to go moderate than get after it.

Back to weather…. Dropped my little girl at ski school and went up and across, north woods had more than the inch and by 11 it was 4", shangrila held 8 fresh nice and deep as did WFO and yonder really nice. Refilled hard all day till closing and till about 5. Early should be fun. Skiing solo again, going orange, black helmet black pants yellow wailers. Say hi. Legs completely shot so meadow-skipping.

    So:
Climate Change + Pineapple Express = Keystone -> Snowbird

    Maybe... 28F in Keystone.

IME there are just certain storm directions and types where Keystone wins the storm and we've been stuck in that pattern for 2 weeks.

I'll investigate with my purple Lotus 138s and report back.

Maybe Vail is messing up their cloud seeding.
