Cold rain down here on the coast. Plan to head up with my son to KW this weekend. Rain or snow. It will be awesome.

And in Alameda, too...steady rain, not showers...and I'm just about to ride my bike home in it. Blah!
    Not for much longer though...

Nice dry snow coming down so far - 2.5 inches at 6400 feet in Truckee, so probably about 5+ inches above 7500 feet. Still coming down steady. Looks like we'll get more than forecast. Just need to get after it before it rains tomorrow and turns to mashed potatoes.

11:00. Almost 2" in the RV parking lot at 6,200'. Snowing lightly. Blowing well.
    Bring it on.

Not much fell overnight here on the Reno side of Mt Rose at 5800'. Went to bed with about 2" on the deck railing, woke up with about 3" outside.

When it's snowing at 3,000' there is hardly any (if any at all) difference in the amount of snow at those elevations.

I've seen a lot of storms where I have to strongly disagree with you there, including a few weeks ago. However, with this one you're probably right.

4 inches of wet sloppy snow this am - hopefully it's dryer at higher elevations.

    Nice photos, 666.

Be careful out there. It's officially terrible driver season in the Sierra.

Seems like there was an inversion on the eastern slope. Reno (~5,000') got as much snow as my place (~7,600') and there wasn't much snow at all in the middle.

We are not wanted by Kirkwood. We are Welcomed at Alpine and Squaw.

Simple math, no matter how much I love that mountain.

Having a hard time motivating getting out after hearing it rain most of the night.

Passed though a controlled burn while skinning yesterday evening while it was still snow coming down, hope this is not the highlight of the week.

Yikes, was that this AM? You got to question the "Dodge Tough" losing the whole third member. Must have some pretty cheesy fastners......

This is a shot in the dark, but does anybody have a ski lease some buddies and I could use next Tues-Fri? We would be very respectful and leave you with a fridge full of beer and some $$$ to make it worth your time.

I don't know why I bothered, but had to check since I had an errand to run in TC anyway. Yep, total shit conditions on the upper mountain at Squaw - so 8200+ feet. Left after a few laps with my ACL's still intact so I guess it was a success?

Hmm, I thought you were sort of grandfathered into the rv parking lot behind the battered beaver tower. Is that not a thing anymore?

The report is they are even getting rain at Rose today too... ouch. As much as I usually will try anything, I did not bother today...

not today. today the snow is much drier in reno than any of our mountains. :-(

in general, the vast majority of the time, if you are near the snow level there will be a big difference in snow depth as you go higher. it's simple math. the closer you are to freezing, the greater the effect of a change in temperature on snow density.
3" of snow at 32 degrees could easily equal 6" (or more) 1000' higher at 28 degrees. But that 6" would be 8" another 1000' higher at 24 degrees.
In the real world there are many other factors though. If you're driving 2 miles west to gain that 1,000' that could make a huge difference with some of our storms.

Not a thing anymore. As of this year. I was chatting with someone else who got kicked to the curb. From their perspective, some 7800' parties where furniture was burned in the parking lots got scapegoated on the people sleeping in their RVs; so no more RV lot.

Vail has finally gotten rid of the riff raff. The places is going to be wonderful now. Fantastic. Bigly, I tell you.

Or something like that. Sad loss.

And tomorrow night, Brendan Leonard (of semi-rad.com) will be at Tahoe Art Haus for his 60 Meters to Anywhere book tour.
