    Bromo, we replaced the MAF on our 996 last year as it was kicking back error codes that wouldn't let us pass emissions. Turned out nothing was wrong ($600 later) and it was the O2 sensors that had just got glitchy over the years. Unfortunately there was no way for Porsche to determine if it was sensor or MAF and just had to troubleshoot it by replacing all of em. Shitty part was that it was running perfectly fine, and even 'passed emissions' when they jammed the tube up its exhaust (they can't pass a car with check engine light on - stupid law), and after a little over a grand in sensors and MAF we were able to earn the right to give the state their $75 registration fee.

    Sorry guys, not on the hook for an engine yet. Not able to drive it for a while, but I'll figure it out.

    This is the fun part. I already dropped 6k on the ims permanent fix + peripheral refresh. The ims is fine. It seems like the fabseepd airbox I put on fouled the mass airflow sensor, which led to rich fuel/air ratio.     The M96/7 engines (996/997.1/986/987 Carreras, Boxsters and Caymans from 1999-2008) aren't ultra high performance or racing engines. They sound great and are powerful but are deeply flawed designs. Ims isn't the biggest risk to the engine, it's losing a cylinder from a variety of causes, one I'm currently trying to avoid.

    The fallacy that Porsche knows better than small shops is popular but the truth is only small shops with skilled techs can rebuild and strengthen the m96/97. Porsche is clueless. Their 9A1 DFI engines are starting to exhibit similar cylinder failures, it's just profit motive over quality.

    It's also common knowlege porsche uses airflow resrictions to keep power down on base models. The trick is keeping the MAF protected. I'll figure it out.

    Nice, that sounds familiar.

    I've been freaking out a bit as Jake (guy you talked to in GA) noted that it's an eventual engine killer if untreated. So based on a minor aftermarket part that was far from cheap I risked an engine and guaranteed up to a grand in unnecessary repairs. I've been dealing with moisture related to the intake and thought it was under control, but apparently not.

    I'm happy to keep the 996 healthy and be diligent about maintenance. But dropping coin on stuff that puts the whole thing at risk is infuriating, just unnecessary shooting of the foot!

    Hydrolocking shouldn't occur unless fuel is literally pooling on top of the piston, but if there is a carbon issue, the crew at BobIsTheOilGuy love BG44k. Motorvac would be something else to check into.

    ^thanks, planning to do a sequence of replace MAF, then replace fuel injectors, probably use BG product to help clean the internals as they're likely a bit grimey with the rich mixture.

    I should be honest and note that much of the frustration is being unable to take it down to vegas sunday. Thats 400 miles each way in an element instead of a 911.. with all new tires I was hoping to set a new personal best high score on the speedometer.

    Am I missing something here? Why not remove the MAF and clean it and reinstall it? I have Fabspeed parts installed on my maser
    and I think they are topshelf.

    True on all points. Looking in the mirror at those sexy hips is a great thing. Even better is looking at it straight on at its ass.

    Right on about heading into turns; stay on the gas and trust that the 300mm rears will hold you as the very pointable front end leads you is a totally different driving experience.

    ^ It's funny how a car with such unique and potentially catastrophic handling characteristics became such a classic sports car...

    Oddly, having spent a good bit of time in air cooled 911's, I find the AWD system in the golf requires similar technique, although not for the same reason... Honestly, with summer tires on, I don't think many would have the balls to enter a corner on a mountain pass at a speed that would let this thing lift off oversteer... But the FWD biased Haldex 5 system really only seems to engage the rear under power, so if I enter a corner too fast and don't get the weight off the nose it wants to understeer, but if I scrub off enough speed before turning in, it's just foot to the floor and the rear keeps chasing the front through the corner. As long as I can keep my foot down, it keeps tracking. Lift off and it's back to understeer.

    So that's pretty confusing.....there's Dromontana who has a picture of a pow skier, and there is Bromontana, who has a picture of the SAME pow skier, and has been around far longer. And then when you look up Dromontana, it says last activity as being 13 Aug 2016, when the last post was AT LEAST 01 Nov 2016.

    So what's up with that? I get it that it's likely the same person that at some point had a sign-up issue, and thus made a name similar to the original, and not that it is of any great import anyway, but jus' wonderin'

    You're obviously the same person...so I'm guessing you have one sign up from one particular platform, and another for another platform, possibly due to when you're using a VPN and when you're not....or Tor.. ..it's always a PITA when I get on here via tor (or TRY to! ). Carry on.

    Aston is going sideways with these latest refreshes. (IMO)

    I know everything is big and bloated now but there was a cleanliness to what are actually pretty large cars in the last generation.

    These, while far from ugly, just look like huge GTs. (And the messed up the rear 1/3 with that weird swoop)

    That puppy took a blisteringly short amount of time to get to 240 mph! From 240 to 270 took the longest of all...tells you the compounding of factors at plus250mph speeds. Will we ever see a 300 mph production road car in our lifetimes?
