Calmly re-tying his shoes beforehand is akin to Babe Ruth calling his home run. Even the announcers were saying "when the best player in the world ties his shoes before a free kick that's never a good sign."

They don't get any better than that. That was pretty much perfect.

Messi has mad skills. It's great to see him play, but I hope our thugs don't behead him.

Looks so bad, I'm willing to bet $50 Ronaldo scores in this game.

    Um....what?

Pretty incredible that Guzan is still on the pitch after that clothes line on Lavezzi, even if he was offsides (which I'm not convinced he was...)

Could say the same about Bradley.... He's turned the ball over at least four fucking times...... And there you go, Wondolowski is out for the second....

For the national team at least. It was a whole thing during the last World Cup.

Anyway I think this game was over before it started. I'm guessing it'll end 4-0

Seriously. Messi is arguably the best ever at direct free kicks. Here are the EIGHT he made THIS YEAR. (Nine now!)

Yup. The last two years he's really upped that part of his game. He scored a similar free kick to the one he hit tonight, but from an even tougher angle, against Sevilla this year.

Penalty kicks, however, are the only area where he appears to be human

US has a long way to go to get to the level Argentina plays at but so does most of the rest of the world.

Columbia v Chile should be a great match tomorrow but I don't see anyone competing with the white and blue.

That free kick was perfectly placed. For almost any other player I would say it was luck but not with Messi, just a freak of nature!

FUck might be 5 now. At least we'll do better than Mexico

Good game. US played well by their own standard. Argentina as well, by far their best game so far.

But the two teams are clearly on different levels.

It looked like it but then again I know nothing at all about soccer and am about 6 beers deep so grain of salt.

The bitter pill is not that US loses to Argentina, there's no shame there, but that we played so crappy. I just think we don't have any players that have been in top notch high pressure games and therefore they fold and can't even make simple passes or clean 1st touches when it counts. ARG have numerous players who have played in Champions League, World Cup Finals, Champions League Finals, Cup Titles, etc, etc. Whats the best we can claim? MLS Final?

I'd like to see some stats about how many unforced giveaways the us had. Its one thing to have to deal with Messi and Arg but its another to be your own worst enemy.

    I think so.

The level he plays and reads today's game and can still scare the talent out of really good players.. gets defenders to watch him rather than the ball or cover the space he creates.. and that touch.. even the simplest pass is just such perfect spin or slice.

Or you know - crosses to nobody, missed (easy) stops/traps of the ball, horrendous first and second touches the whole match...

Argentina's passing in the D was impressive. They ran our boys ragged - no way could they keep that up the whole game.
