This is what you've been programmed to believe. It's the Juedo-Christian concept of marriage and has nothing to do with reality. This is why there is a stigma when it comes to split ups and it leads to all the guilt, bitterness and judgement. Some people do find their soulmate at a young age and stay with them forever. Some people don't. People change over time and want different things and go different directions.

We took the girls out for the younger daughters birthday yesterday. Now 28 and 30.5 years old. Neither is married, both attractive, smart girls with good paying jobs. Neither has expressed an interest in marriage and the older one says "hell no" to the idea of children.
That said, I think my idea would go over well with the younger generation, as they are not getting married for the most part anyways. Why not have any perks that go with marriage, but an easy and clean way out down the road if they don't keep the relationship growing?
As far as assets obtain during marriage, that is determined upfront. To be fair, I would say the joint assets obtained while married are split based on the taxable income percentage each brought to the relationship during it's term (if both working) and or a certain value is agreed upon for the spouse that stays home raising children (as that job sucks and deserves some solid comp).
This would be very common place if people had the ability to reason and not act like sheep.

I first heard about the idea of a renewable 5 yr marriage contract from a coworker (an engineer) who suggested and implemented it with her husband. They have two kids. Since hearing about it, I've realized that it comes up as an idea among several of the 40ish women I know.

In a similar vein, there are more women these days (at least those over 30) who are advocating for a small wedding. Shit's changing, at least in CA & PNW.
