This Fiat Topolino Zagato Is A Little Jewel

“I love the aspect of handmade, I love the aluminum work…” says Scott Gauthier, “I love that every one of them is unique.”

“I’ve really been taken by that,” he adds. Once you hear Gauthier—an avowed fan of Italian coachbuilder Zagato—talk about this particular car, it’s clear this little jewel is something special.

You’re looking at the only known surviving 1949 Fiat Topolino 750 MM by Zagato, one of a handful originally built…and a car that even raced flat-out in period at Italy’s harrowing Mille Miglia road race.

It may be from before his time, but Gauthier knows the car inside out: he’s the one who restored it.

“I’ve always loved working with my hands,” he says, explaining how he eventually found himself years later making his own jewelry. “Restoring cars, I think is one of the joys of owning a car… Because of the world I’m in, nothing really scares us. You just can’t look at it as too serious of a thing,” he says.

“It’s just metal, paint, it’s forming, and it’s fabrication.”

Judging by the numerous awards the car has been honored with since restoration was finished, this rare car will likely survive far into the future thanks to Gauthier’s own two hands.

Pretty much need five minutes to look at it. If its mint, its prolly a museum piece. I think $250,000 would be a stretch. A 185 does the same thing only way better.

Did you guys watch the Barrett Jackson segment on tv last night? WTF is with a 79 Trans Am selling for $170,000?!! I know it only had 7 miles on it and still had the original plastic on the seats but damn... The night before a 1980 went for 100k. Fkn screamin' chickens FTW. There was also a matte black Local Motors Rally Fighter with an LS3 that sold for 95k, I want one of those in a big way.

What a piece of shit those cars were. There were two black ones with miles that sold for $75K+. Richard Rawlings bought one. I think one used in the movie is on the block this w/e. It shouldn't be long until we see IROC-Z's and Shelby GLH's going for $100K. Get em now. Retards depending on other retards to pay more money.

    @Bmills- Silver.

The black '80 had 739 miles on it. I can't imagine holding onto those cars for all these years and never driving them in hopes they'd be collectible but apparently the people that did were right. Whoda thunk...

That beats the first 2015 Mustang ($350k), first 2014 Z28 ($650K), and first 2016 GT350R ($1M). Did Honda/Acura package it with an experience of any sort?

Edit: In the last minute, a factory delivery and a special Indy racing package was added on. It should be noted that although they had a lava red NSX on stage, the winner can specify any color and options he wanted.

Interesting, so the Type A in me wonders, if they had one on stage, and the owner/bidder can specify the options, is it really NSX #1? Or was this just marketing hype?

They build tons of prototypes before the actual production run starts, the car on stage was probably one of those.

The airplane went for $65,000. someone got a good deal.
Ferrari prices seem to be dropping for 360/430/458. Seeing 360's under $55,000, 430's under $80,000, and I saw a 458 under $140,000. A couple years and they will be at taurus prices, whoopie.

360s and 430s at that price need a 3 year and most definitely are F1 cars.

458 for 180 is not bad. Car still has some slipping to do. Also 12s only have a year of prepaid maint left so those will start to drop.

I know next to nothing about planes, but the winning bid on the Cessna seems very decent. Old plane that probably needs to be gone through, sure. But super low hours and what seems like a reasonably cheap way into a flying.

Nothing cheap about flying! Here in Ak, there are lots airplanes falling into disrepair from lack of use do to fuel and maintenance costs. At Merrill Field, once one of the largest small plane airfields in the world, last year 60% of the dwindling number of planes never left the ground.
