School me on a Blue-ray player

    This is what we need:

    1) Plays Blue-ray and dvd
    2) Streams from the internet (thinking Netflix)
    3) Wi-fi (can't get Ethernet cord tot he device easily)
    4) HDMI connected to the TV

    I'm thinking something like this: BDP-S3500 https://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-son...edia-streaming

*is there a cost for the apps?

NOPE....kids have the PS3 and a full assortment of games.

Not starting over......even though they often ask.

But, if I was a gamer, the answer would be obvious.

All the apps you're going to really want to use are free, and probably pre-installed on the player. (Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, Amazon Prime.) There are hundreds of additional apps, mostly free, and mostly useless. You download them through the player's on-screen menu once it is connected to your wifi network.

I have an old Sony blu-ray player in the basement that is connected by wifi, and it works surprisingly well for streaming, even with my slow DSL service.

Or you could go to Costco and buy a new one of whatever the latest model is.

How about another PS3? They're cheap, apparently your kids already have a bunch of games, play bray & dvd, has a free netflix client, can connect via wifi and has an hdmi out.

How about another PS3 on the used market...?

Edit: Derp. That's what I get for not refreshing the tab before posting. But, seriously, great minds and that shit..

Yes. Just pop in the disc & enjoy.

Install netflix when you're done with the movie.

    People still watch Blurays?

I can't recall the last time I watched or listened to anything off a physical disc.

Seriously. Just get a $35 Chromecast and move on with your life unencumbered by scratched discs.

We have a 120" screen with a projector and the difference between playing blurays and DVDs or streaming is night and day. The larger screen magnifies the lower resolution and refresh rate and makes stuff look much less crisp and lifelike. Blurays kick ass on it though, especially the newer movies that have all the bad ass cgi and the animated stuff from Disney / Pixar. Fwiw we use the ps4 for games, blurays, and streaming.

For sure, was messing w/ you. I have no experience in the blue-ray market... but yeah, the PS3 you have is the blueray you're looking for

Thread stray... how do you deal w/ the shitty quality of downloaded music? I guess it's getting better but I still buy discs, rip them then put them on the device I want to use.

Update: Thanks for the Netflix on the PS3 tip. I was able to download the app...but could never actually get on Netflix.

It seems that Netflix kept searching for a connection, but ultimately I kept getting a code stating that I couldn't log in (ui 108). I tried all the tips that I found online (such as holding start & select). I know the PS3 is connected to the internet. The weird part is that I could never get Netflix to ask for log-in information. My next step is to move the PS3 to near the router and plug it in with the Ethernet cable.

    I wish this was simple.

^ Just for the hell of it, login to Netflix on your PC, and goto: My Account> My Streaming Plan and pick 'Sign out of all devices' and give it another try. Hooking up via ethernet is definitely a good troubleshooting step though, so give that a shot too. Streaming might suck if you've got a weak wifi signal at the PS3. Always better to use a wired connection than wifi (if possible).
