Durable Phone Charger? (USB to micro)

Bought my 9 yr old son a tablet for Xmas and he's apparently trying to set some sort of record for destroying chargers.

I've spent more on fucking chargers than the tablet at this point.

I'm trying my best to teach him to stop being so rough with them, but I've got a better chance of seeing God than that happening.

So...does anyone know of a VERY durable charger?

The $15-$20 ones don't last for shit, and the cheaper ones are worse.

    HELP!

    $15-$20? You're a sucker

$0.72. Buy him 20. Make him mow the lawn every time he breaks one.

I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

Yeah, if I broke stuff when I was a kid, I didn't get new ones. Too bad, you should have treated it better.

I learned that lesson when I was 5, two days after I got an ERTL 1:18 General Lee toy.

^^ This too. By age 9 I was good enough with small screwdrivers and krazy glue to fix my own shit. Electronics though, I had to earn some $ to rebuy it.

and how is he breaking a charger? I don't think I've ever managed to do that. Is he using the tablet while it is charging?

Yeah...I've been beating him senseless every time he breaks one, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I've tried those cheap ones and they last about 1/10 of the time with him, but I guess it's still worth ordering a bunch if there's no better alternative.

Poor kid just has literally zero ability to be careful with ANYTHING. Type of kid that will dent your car, spill your beer, and break his glasses all in a matter of seconds.

    He's a great kid...Just a total disaster

He breaks them by being too rough connecting and disconnecting...and using while charging. They start to get loose and then won't charge

Maybe it's time for tough love. You broke it, tough shit, you go without for a week once the battery dies.

Short lengths will stop him from playing while its charging.

We've been fighting the same battle for a while now and I really don't think there's a good solution. More expensive cords crap out just as quickly as the cheaper ones. So every couple of months I order a pack of cheap ones from Amazon and chalk it up to the cost of doing business. Hopefully wireless charging hits the mainstream soon because micro USB is a shitty solution when you have to plug these devices in several times a week.

You're asking about a cable, not the charger, right? This is the charger:

They rarely break. Teach your kid not to pull the mini-USB out by the cable but by the plug. The wires are thin and the mini USB end has a little knob that helps hold it in the tablet/phone/etc. If necessary you can get some heat-shrink and re-enforce the cable where it connects to the plug.

Yup. Tough love is the answer. He's 9, not 2. My parents bought things for us ONCE. After that we were on our own. My brother and I mowed a LOT of lawns, and raked/bagged a buttload of leaves in our neighborhood to pay for anything. We also got really good at fixing things.

Show him the proper way to plug/unplug his device, and if he breaks it again, it's on him to buy it. 9 is plenty old to learn some responsibility. Cables are dirt cheap enough that your Tasmanian Devil son can easily pay for replacements on his own out of his own allowance or doing work around the 'hood.

I find it amazing that the tablet survives and the charger gets destroyed. I would have thought the tablet would be more delicate. You could replace your wall outlet with one of those USB types.

    Yes, cable.

Dr Destructo pulls it out by the cable and also uses it while charging.

Both of which destroy the cable quickly.

It's the running joke that he destroys everything. Kid is like the fucking cookie monster when he eats too. Between the food and grass stains, everything he wears is fair game to be ruined at any moment.

I could write a book about just his glasses alone. The latest...He was in knee deep water at day camp...visiting my dad in RI. He drops the glasses in the water and loses them. He gets home from vacation and I ask about the glasses. He had the most amazing week of his life, so I'm being really nice to him so he can enjoy his high...

    Lost your glasses huh?...Yeah

So, was the water murky?...no it was actually perfectly clear!

I just walked away knowing he didn't even look for em. Turns out mom interrogated and I was right.

I fear the day this kid gets behind the wheel. I'll tell you right now he's gonna hit something in the first 2 weeks he has a licence.

Get a cable that is coiled. That way if he moves, it has some give to it before it yanks out of the device. Another alternative is a case that has a supplemental battery to it, so it does not need to be plugged in as often. Of course those are all technology solutions to a strictly human problem as clearly expressed by the lost glasses.

Every time the terrorist breaks a cord, have him do the equivalent in minimum wage labor (you should be doing this anyway). And just pull from a small stockpile.

Your lack of responsibility for your 9 year-old's character is remarkable. I know a lot of parents reading this are gaped at how you can just blow it off like that...

    Monoprice has cheap cables, BTW.

    Perfect parent checking in.

You have ruined your child, because he breaks the already impossibly fragile micro usb, and you haven't bludgeoned him.

I'd look into adoption, and get yourself some help.

    smh.

    Ha..exactly

I'm actually really hard on him because he's always such a disaster.
My wife is always telling me to back off.

I'm constantly taking things away from him and "teaching him responsibility"

I've been on his ass his whole life and I've actually been backing off lately cause I've realized I can only do so much. He's just a little kid after all.

We have 2 kids...the other is the complete opposite.

Duct tape the entire length of cable until it is 1" thick from end to end, except for the connections. Problem solved.

I know he's 9, but perhaps it's time nigh time he learn about financial responsibilities. He breaks his next cable? Well, too bad. His electronics can stay dead until he earns enough from manual labor or a lemonade stand to buy himself a new one. That's the only way he'll learn.

Besides, what's the urgency to have his tablet in perfect working order 24/7? Is it an emergency? Does he need to check his work e-mail or something? If he's going to destroy stuff, let it remain destroyed until he replaces or learns to fix these things himself.

DJSapp- I just want you to know that I picture all of your posts being read/delivered with the same enthusiasm of the guy in your avatar. makes me laugh when it's serious post or about duct tape
