yeah, again - don't see it as "Dad Rock" but I suppose if your Dad was a punk/funk/pop rocker than yeah. My Dad listened to Sousa.

So would that make DEVO "Dad Rock" too?

Pretty sure any band that was active almost 40 years ago, like Devo & Talking Heads, would count. Just remember that had things turned out differently you could be a Grandmother by now.

    Absolutely!

And the Clash, Joy Division, X, Nirvana, Public Enemy, Nine Inch Nails, the Pixies, the Police, the Smiths, Social Distortion, the Screaming Trees, and, and, and I'm out of breath.

Bruce was the white, working class answer to disco, which, at the time was the ISIS of music, although I have taken quite a liking to the genre lately when I hear it. But, you know, The Hustle and some stupid thing by the Four Seasons and other shit was stealing girlfriends of all types to the dark side. Somebody had to stop it. Springsteen had the Jersey market, Billy Joel had the Long Island market, Mellencamp secured the Midwest industrial regions, and the southern rockers had, well, the south. Survived punk and new wave and grunge and whatever. Murica.

Huh. Well if that is "Dad music" then this amazing collection of artists must be your Grandpa's music. Whatever you do don't listen. Not sure you can deal

I don't own, or have ever owned, 1record, 1 cassette tape, 1 cd/dvd of Bruce's. If someone offered me a front row seat I would gladly hook a fan up

Not mine, but pretty much any one under 30, yeah. Shit BB KIng just died and was 89yo! Clapton is 70, Buddy Guy almost 80, and Chuck Berry is 88… your point escapes me. All of the artists (well the ones still alive) you linked to in those videos are grandparents, some multiple ones.

Point? I dunno, no point I suppose. I was facetiously replying to "The Suit" and sharing some music. I used an emoticon. <shrug>

Music is universal. It is beautiful, painful, angry, joyful, cleansing, freeing, moving, and life altering. It can transport you to another place and time. Life without music is no life at all.

Ah - thought your point was that those great artists aren't the music of Dads (or Grandparents.) They clearly are, but hopefully at least some 20somethings are still listening to them.

Art rock. It was all downhill after the first album. I saw Pearl Harbor and the Explosions open for TH and PH was the better act imo Years later I had the chance to meet and hang out with Pearl E. Gates. Awesome lady and iconic rocker. So stylish. She just lit up a room.

My Romeo Void art rock story. We met Debra Iyali in the bar at Dante's Portland. She needed to go back to her hotel to get something and we offered her a ride. My friend gave her a joint of super strong weed and she basically went catatonic. Benjamin Bossi was so pissed he was putting lit cigarettes in her hair. Good band though. It was this tour:

Just think about the simple title of the post. To me, I'm right at that house with mary. It paints a vivid mental picture. Summer, young love, crazy youth, mistakes.
Damn sorry I could talk Bruce stuff for a long time. I appreciate him way more in my old age than I ever did as a stupid kid.
BTW Joel has some great tunes too. From a town known as oyster bay long island rode a boy with a six pack in his hand. And if you ain't heard it go play the song closer to the borderline by Joel. Not typical.

I've come to the realization, through great covers of his songs, that the guy is one hell of a song writer. Still not really a fan when he's the one performing the songs.

The Band's cover of Atlantic City is up there for me. Shovels and Rope doing Johnny 99 live was memorable. Etc.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Amusing thread. I laughed at the description of Talking Heads as a dad band, but come to think of it my daughter gets all reminiscent about growing up at our house when a Talking Heads song comes on.

I'm not a huge Springsteen fan but you have to respect the songwriting and feeling on songs like Born to Run.

Romeo Void art rock story: an old high school friend is married to RV's bass player. We get along well and hang out a couple times a year. BTW, the singer pronounces her name de-BOR-ah, not Debra.

Edit: Not a lot of people in their 30s or younger seem to know the band Romeo Void.

I never thought of RomeoVoid as an Art-rock band, but then again I only remember "Never say Never" and "Girl in Trouble." Wiki calls them "Post-punk" and "New Wave" but that never seems to mean anything anyway.

Great period for him. The double CD release of Lucky Town and Human Touch was encouraging. It was all downhill after that. His present stuff is unlistenable.

btw, Jersey born and bred, and almost his age. I have smoked a number more than once under that giant exon sign.

Labels, especially for music, can be problematic. However, that won't keep me from using labels like "secretary rock" and "dad rock."

That said, RV's (obscure) first album has a lot of somewhat art-rock worthy moments.
