I'll post pics up later but stoked to report I just picked up a Henry 45-70 lever action to celebrate my move to Jackson. Figured a buffalo gun would be appropriate.

Also got the new Sig P320 compact in 9mm and plan to get the conversion kit so it can shoot .45 ACP.

Nice. I picked up a Marlin 1895 a couple months back. That 45/70 is fun to shoot.

I just got my childhood .22 Rifle back.

Why are .22 bullets so rare now? It's been like 3-4 years I've heard.

Hoarders, preppers and old people with nothing better to do than buy .22lr and resell it on Gun Broker. I used to shoot my .22 a lot, but I haven't shot it in months because its such a pain to find .22lr at the store.

I've heard it will take some time still before supply catches up with demand. A good friend taught me years ago to always buy a box of ammo if I had a little extra dough each trip to Wal-Mart. He's seen this run on .22 happen before so I'm glad I followed his advice... I'm sitting on ~ 10k rds.

The Houge grips did not really do anything about the kick, but at least it made the gun controllable. With the stock cowboy grips I put 6 magnum rounds through it and my hand was a bloody mess. Fuck that, installed the Houge grips and no more blood when using magnum loads. For practice I use .44 Special and the gun is a lot of fun. In the woods it is loaded with the real deal.

Edit: the cut hand was from the trigger guard. Note that the Houge grips put some rubber there to cover it.

The LCR .38 has more kick than expected. Plenty controllable, but not really enjoyable as a range gun. After my first day back at the range in 3 years, I have new-found appreciation for my SR9c, but am just more comfortable with a wheelgun for critter defense.

Around here my concern (founded or unfounded) is more about Mountain Lion, but maybe similar to your "if I ever have to use this" scenario, given the lion's stalk and ambush MO, it's questionable whether I would have time to react/fight back. Better than bare hands though, and also will not be shooting at anything beyond 10 feet, unless of course "it's coming straight for us!"

Leavenworth, those things look nice. Any plan to make one to fit an LCR?

Well, I hand-loaded my first "complete victory" yesterday. Built a 168g Nosler Balistic Tip with 44g of IMR 4064, Winny primers and recycled brass for the .308. 1/2" groups at 100yards on the bench from a factory Tikka T3 Light. I am completely addicted to hand loading now.

Shot 40 rds through the new toy this afternoon and could have plinked all day. Such a solid rifle the recoil is negligible to a plus size gentleman like myself.

Now I want to get a leather scabbard and trusty steed to ride around Jackson dispensing justice.

Anyone have any experience with the Vortex Viper PST 1-4? Just ordered one and a bunch of other stuff from 3point5, so it may take a while before it actually shows up which should give me a little time to track down a decent deal on a LT 104 mount. If anyone happens to have a spare LT104 sitting around that they'd like to sell, please let me know.

I have one with the CM203 mount on a Stag 3G. It's nice. I'm quite happy with it. I like the variable illumination a lot more than I thought I might. I find shooting two-eyes-open at 1x more difficult than with a reflex or holo, but that's to be expected. 4x is enough to shoot pretty well at 100 yards, but I could definitely use more magnification for bench stuff.

Well, pretty much 1/2 the office at First Lite placed an order with Woody, so we're all stoked. We covered pretty much everything they make so I'll be sure to post some pics when we get them. Stoked!

I also got to shoot my VP9 tonight. Hands down the easiest auto I've ever fired. Super tight groups (for me) at 10 and 20 yards. It was really the first auto I've fired that I was really happy with trigger out of the box. It's buttery nuts.

Regarding Vortex PST--I have PST Viper 6x24 FFP MOA's on all of my rifles. They are fantastic optics and when you break one (like I did), you can warranty them and they'll have it back to you in under a week, no questions asked. There's a reason Vortex is crushing so much ass these days. Plus, they're all very good people, so that's cool.

Good info, thanks mang. I ordered that same mount with the scope, but wanted something like the larue or bobro indexed mount w/ quick disconnects so the scope can come on & off while still maintaining zero. Cleaning and transport are so much easier when the scopes come off. Planning on putting it on the carbine I run in my local 3gun series (mega lower, vltor vis upper w/ dd 14.5" 1/7 bbl) as it seems like a decent mix between a red dot and a low magnification scope. Intended use is all inside of 200yd, so 4x will be just fine for drilling 3-6" steel plates. Looks like the best of both worlds between a red dot and a low power tactical optic. Hope I don't end up kicking myself in the ass for being cheap and not ponying up for the Razor HD Gen II 1-6x24. I also ordered a VMX-3T 3x magnifier w/ flip mount to stick behind the vortex strikefire on another of my m4gery's.

I haven't had to deal with Vortex's customer service yet, but I'm told they are excellent and your experience seems to support that. The unconditional lifetime warranty sure does inspire confidence in their products. I've got 2 of the 6-24x50's and they're probably one of the best value optics on the market. One is on my 20" bench AR, and the other is on a savage 308. Nice clear glass and they're very easy to use. I think this 1-4 is a slightly different animal though. It's SFP, and really made to be a close up optic. Probably going to be 4-6 weeks before my order comes in, but I'll report back and let folks know how it works out when it shows up.

I run one on an sbr-ed vector hk in 223. It shot really really high but I was able to crank it all the way back down. I used a leupold mount which I think caused it but the amount of adjustment was impressive. Other than that, it looks really clean and I think the glass is pretty good for the money. Everybody loves shooting it.

I need to put some more gun pron on here, the 45-70 was nice but we need more per page.

Ok, more gun stoke...

Two of my current favorites:

First the IWI Tavor. I have a Mepro M-21 on top that I like. I don't have nearly the exposure to reflex/holos that I would like, but I can definitely say that I prefer it to the Trijicon RX01 and EOTech XPS2 that I have used in the past. It's a little tall for an AR platform (rail is flush with cheek weld on the Tavor). The trigger is pretty heavy, and it's stock for now. I may change that in the future.

Second is the Springfield TRP (top of picture below). There's nothing about it that you really notice. It just works. Sight picture is nice, heft is nice, accuracy is far better than me. Trigger is beautiful. It's a really nice piece of machinery that happens to be fun to shoot.

Honorable mention is a WASR-10. I'm not sure there's more fun to be had per dollar in the firearms world.

Planning on ponying up and go through the hassle that is firearms acquisition here in Norway.

A 6.5x55 is the most sensible thing out there,legal for any and all hunting except for bear, cheap as fuck match ammo, but needs to be handloaded to get muzzle velocities to nice levels.

A 7mm rem or blaser mag(identical performance) is more in line with what I want, easily able to drive 180 grain bullets at 2900fps, easy killing on any scandinavian game, recoil is not much worse than a 30-06.

So, heart says 7 mag, brain says 6.5. The happy medium says 6.5-284,though heavier bullets in a 6.5 is a bitch to get.

Brain says the 6.5 will allow me more trigger time, and it is a fun round, so there's that. Can always shoot the barrel to shit, get a new bolt head and get myself a 7mag barrel later on, if I want.

Plan is a long action stiller or rem700, see what turns out the smartest buy, take it fromthere. Don't want a short action.

Any thoughts?

Don't forget about Savage or Tikka, both have excellent out of box accuracy. Savage's are super easy to change barrels on, and you can shoot Short-Action rounds with Long Actions with the right conversion parts.

6.5x284 is a rad round but a real barrel burner.

Do what your heart says if guns are a pain in the ass to buy. Recoil on the 7mm Mag can be managed with a muzzle brake or better yet, a Suppressor (which are pretty cheap/easy to buy in Norway, yeah?) With a muzzle brake on my .300 Win Mag it has the same recoil or less than the 6.5s I've shot.

Thanks, LS. Suppressors can be bought by anyone in Norway, hunting/club license or not. Hunting weapons, meaning bolt actions, certain semi autos (there's an actual list of semis legit for hunting, about 13 or so!), and most shotguns if they don't look militarily originated (don't even ask - that also counts for the allowed semi auto rifles), can be applied for to the PD, but you'll only get easy and quick paperwork if that number does not supercede six. The application fee is the same whether you apply for one or six calibers, so that's what I'm gonna do. 12G, 6.5x55, 7 mag, 223, etc.

Was at the range today, got to shoot my brother in law's Tikkas, which I've shot before, 308s both, with suppressors. Lots of fun. Got to try a 6.5x55 afterwards, and there's a lot to like about that round. Low recoil, flattish trajectory, very accurate up to a 1000m, or so I'm told. Only shot it at 500m earlier, and today we had high winds, so couldn't really stretch its legs.

So, today confirms my sneaking suspicion that I'd be better off with the 6.5. Probably with a brake, because I wear peltors and don't especially like warm suppressor induced mirage.

Don't love the bolt movement of the Tikka, but it's not a deal breaker.

Are some 700 actions better than others? Thinking sendero vs XCR vs SPS, and so on..
