Coaching young kids sports teams

What's funny is how all his friends that play soccer or football are so jealous of the golf team guys. They all know it's the best HS sport due to the freedom.

Coaches and parents care way more than the kids do about all this shit. They know they're not going pro, but some of the parents seem to think their little johnny is going...even in HS. Kooks.

I was just having a conversation about this with my 8 yr old. He loves golf and now hates lax cause of his scum bag coaches..same season for HS sports here.

I was explaining to him how all the guys that thought golf was stupid in HS now want to play golf more than anything else...and they're all pissed that they didn't start when they were kids.

Every single person that hears I played HS golf, and didn't already know that, always goes on and on about how they really regret not playing golf instead of whatever else they did.

Went to my son's open house tonight...should be called the mommy parade really

I was in the cafeteria with a guy I played hockey with as kids and we were talking about how we used to have our banquets in there. it reminded me of one of these bad coach situations.

I had just moved from RI...played tier 1 travel every year against the best teams in the country... traveled all over, and won. My first year in NY I played tier 2 and lit it up like crazy. I played D and averaged somewhere around 4 points a game...led the team and the league in scoring...I hurt about 10 kids that year with perfectly clean hits...I was playing in a league way below my ability.

Anywho...banquet rolls around. They give out all the awards...

I had at least 6 hat tricks that year...probably more...and at least that many assists. And literally nobody ever got around me.

You get a hat trick patch for each one and a playmaker patch for each 3 assist game. I got one patch..can't remember which one. Coaches son played D...very average player...probably 5 goals and 6 assists all year. He gets like 2 or three of each patch.

Then they give out the best D award.

I wish I could have seen my face when they called the coaches son's name.

Senior yr of HS I scored 5 goals in our state qualifier game...we won 6-1.

I played for an out of town team at this point and my HS library got the out of town paper, so I would always go up there to read about our games in the paper.

I wore #17...Huge headline with guy's name that wore #11 in bold letters...**** Leads Team To NYS Playoffs With 5 Goal Performance

You're obviously coaching girls We did the same at that level (travel, not school) and ended up winning our leagues states in which every player played in the final. I'm not going to lie as it was kind of hard to get everyone in that game, but we made a point to do it. Reflecting back it would have sucked to win and not have every member a part of it and it would have been fine to lose if every member was a part of it.

Coaching girls is 10x more trying than boys, if you yell you can at least get a group of boys attention...girls just keep talking. Everybody always plays but with 18 equal time is almost impossible. I came up with a decent solution a few years ago by setting up at least a few B games each season to make sure the younger and rec players get plenty of field time in those games. It's hard to send 6th graders out on the field against much bigger/stronger 8th graders as more often than not they get schooled, which does absolutely no good for their confidence or development. The B games give them a chance to play substantial time against kids closer to their skill level and size and satisfies the parents that do clock every minute of little Sally's field time.

Middle school is tough because having fun has to be the main focus while still teaching those who have an interest in advancing along with the 8th graders headed to HS next year that have a chance to continue playing, that competitiveness and wanting to work on your fundamentals is critical. It's a very interesting balancing act each practice.

If I could get mine in to golf I'd be psyched, she likes the game but would rather drive me around in the cart...she should ace drivers ed in a few years if nothing else. She's more interested in being on the snowboard team in HS but now wants to try rugby. The coach had her come to a game and sit in at a practice and do some non-contact drills and has already invited her to practice with the HS team in the spring, Ms FD is less than enthused! We'll see how it goes but it seems girls rugby is gaining a lot of popularity in these parts and with college scholarships, sure as hell can't hurt to give it a try I guess.

forgive me stating the obvious, but why not drive the homeward leg of a carpool if you cant get out early to get him there on-time. stay at home milf drives them there, you swing them home.

we juggle a bunch of kids of all ages, all over the place, so FULLY appreciate what's involved.

My brother in law is doing the single dad thing. (Mom is out of the country permanently). It's tough for a single dad--the moms, mostly stay at homes, who drive carpools and look after each other kids don't want to have anything to do with single dads. The dads aren't part of the club.Not easy for single moms either, of course, but given the nature of child custody in most parts of the country, there are a lot more of them and they can work things out a little better, I think. (A LITTLE better.)

My older boy's lacrosse team (10-11 year olds) is required to move into the most competitive division in our league in 2015. As a result, we will conduct tryouts for the first time at the end of October. Team has been together for over two years. Kids who don't make the team will move to lower-level teams.

Although the team has been successful, there are 5-6 very poor players who never touch their sticks between practices. Those kids and their parents simply ignore my repeated requests that they spend just 5-10 minutes a day practicing catching/cradling/throwing and are happy to let the team carry them (so long as they get plenty of playing time).

When tryouts were announced earlier this week, a couple of those families freaked and one father comes out with: "It's total crap that [his little slacker] only has a month to prepare for tryouts."

I was speechless.

The sad thing is none of the complaining sports parents seem to give a shit how the kids our doing in class, as long as they're doing okay in sports. Among my doctor friends it seems that all people talk about is their kids' sports, me included I'm afraid.

At the risk of making you even angrier, I'll add that my boy's summer club team played a bethesda all star team this summer at the world games. They stomped us about as bad as we whipped the philly all stars. Don't recall any whining to mommy by anyone after those games. These kids love to play lacrosse. Why shouldn't the better players get to play together?
