Does a permit to cut on NFS land come with the class? Cuz that would be helpful.

I'm cleaning out the closets this weekend. I should have some gear lying around that will fit him. He's about my size, just checking to make sure he wasn't a xl.

1). Cull the box alder/ moose hobble and remove deadfall.

2). Get better until you can ski the resulting trail.

    3). The End

Since Jay is involved, this workshop will be a chance to reach out to mountain managers about regeneration strategies to let snow preserving trees grow up on lift-served ski areas just as much as strategies to open glades between ski trails.

The other matter that seems to be on folks mind is not something that will be advocated to or by a Forest Ranger. That being said, if you want to see the results of employing the concepts that will be discussed, join us for a work day at MRG.

Could some one remind me what is going on with the land around Bolton Valley. Thought there was going to be a lot of glade cutting there or was it another area?

Wow - that was craziest thing I ever read. That is a lot of cold winters.

I think it's fantastic that these guys are putting this together btw. There is no stopping people from cutting, that much we can be sure of. Might as well minimize the damage due to a lack of information and maximize the skiability of the line. I'd love to join you guys at Mad for a work day but I've got my hands way beyond full down in south central... Between normal work, hill welding projects, trail cuts and OEC renewal I will be up to my eyeballs until well after the snow flies.

Do you guys have a big box alder problem up there? We are thick with it down here. Ugh. Like rats! Good thing it at least cuts like warm butter.

    wow. good read. thx

it's interesting to me how mice and insects and chipmunks and other pests can come into all our homes and steal food and water and shelter and no one really cares.. (well... i guess we execute them with snapping torture devices) but human's just CAN NOT.

Have you ever had your home broken into and had your personal belongings you worked really hard to earn shopped like it's an episode of Supermarket Sweep by someone who simply decided they deserved it?

    I have. It sucks.

Agree DW, but sounds like he has a pretty clear cut case of autism spectrum. I sure would like to see the courts go easy on him (I haven't finished the article yet, half way through...so don't go spoiling it for me.)

Yeah I don't want to see the guy get the chair or anything, but it really sucks when people help themselves to your hard earned shit.

Whether or not he thought he needed it, it's wrong to steal... Moreso 1000+ times!

In any case I hope he gets the help he needs. He clearly showed remorse.

yeah, i have too. i wasn't condoning his actions btw... just thinking about how interesting it is to compare how hard we go on humans vs critters. esp since the guy was stealing subsistence stuff... and not so-called "valuables."

it's also interesting to compare his stealing of substince items to folks keeping up a certain lifestyle off welfare and not working... both are taking from others to survive... one is legal one isn't.

just really really interesting stuff in that article for outdoorsy folks to ponder!

I frankly have a hard time wrapping my head around 27 winters in that spot where 5? months a year he stayed put - I could imagine that getting pretty grim as was described.

Seriously... but I guess he read quite a bit. He is clearly not the same as most of us, NTTAWWT, (except for the stealing part). He's kind of a wounded bird who had to go back to the womb. And he survived just to survive. So fascinating on so many levels... I'm sure he will become a text book psych case.

And I love his response to the Thoreau comparison and summary of his two years... dilettante. I could not agree more. Thoreau may have lived in a cabin at night, but he went into town, ate at friends homes, and basically enjoyed normal life, except for sleeping in a cabin at night. BFD. Dude had a great publicist.

Thanks for posting Mr. M.... great read (while in my isolated cabin in VT).

The regen program is also working. It's not just cutting.

Sure, the Work Day program was partly about managing the cutters, some of whom were starting to create erosion damage. Then, there was that ice storm that did more damage than all the previous cuttings.
