here's the earth view of arrayanes. narrow fairways, and only a few adjacent fairways that don't have enormous ravines between them. the rough that isn't in the ravines is cactus and other super thick prickly shit that it just isn't worth climbing through to find a ball that you won't be able to hit anyway.

The game this year has become bedeviling. Typical rounds are starting to be par-double-par-triple-par-bogey-par-double. Very annoying.

Now that I've started to drive it well, my iron play has gone to shit and my wedge has begun to fail me. That used to be strength of the game. Now I'm hitting dirt too far behind the ball and pushing iron shots right. Ugh.

At least I can putt again.

    Golf. What a fucker.

I'm only bitter about my putting. All the other stuff are just facts about golf. My tee to green game is excellent because I know the value of a simple par. "Bombing it" and shooting 90+ is a losers game.

Sounds like you are using driver swing to hit irons? Check your ball position?

well it's good to know you never shot 90+. i don't bomb it. in fact, i've spent the past two years trying to slow down. my short game is getting better because it's the only thing i can practice at home. my putting is getting better because i'm slowing down everything, performing better, which is in turn keeping me relaxed which reinforces everything. i should have broke 100 last summer but i was trying to hard to break 100. this year i'm just letting things happen, playing each shot as an individual rather than thinking 2 or 3 shots ahead or behind.

this course is harder than redtail or the other portland owned courses, so i'm mostly just interested to see how i have improved regardless of score. when i get home and play at redtail again i'll probably be a little more concerned about breaking 100. i've been close several times to breaking 100 but my anxiety and poor decisionmaking killed it every time.

i've also used this to keep in mind. the problem i have is that if i track all my stats i tend to get uptight.

Played in the league last night and used one of those modern "cheater" drivers I borrowed from Skitobe. S haft, low kick and a sweet spot the size of a saucer. Adjusted the head to 8.5. First time I used it was a par 5. 260 with a little draw downwind and without a practice swing. 5 iron from 240 to 5'. Got the eagle. Felt like I was cheating. It is, or rather it was cheating once.

I think that has to be the case. I'm prob. too flat with the irons. Need to play the ball back a little further in the stance as well.

You hit your cheater driver 260 down wind and your 5 iron 240? Pretty sure there's a typo in there, or you seriously can't hit a driver.

The worst advice I've ever heard is that you should have a consistent swing with all of your clubs. I see it more like this...

    - Driver swing (flatter with upward striking emphasis)
    - fairway wood swing / low iron swing (flatter)
    - 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons (your average swing plane)
    - wedges (85% swing, less rotation and tighter, more upright)

If you can't break 100 this is flawed thinking. Hit the club you can hit in play on every hole. If it's five iron hit five iron. Every time. Take double bogey, or in your case triple bogey, out of play. Most beginners carry too many clubs and never really learn to play the game. You'd be better served to carry 3-wood, Hybrid, 5-7-9-PW-SW and putter at most. lose the driver. Learn to hit shots rather than thinking it's club selection. It isn't

You're probably right. It just makes so much intuitive sense that learning 4 golf swings is easier than learning one. Besides, if there was ever one guy who really had no idea about how to swing a golf club, it's Ben Hogan.

    Moron.

Edit to add: just reread this post. This is quite possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard, read, or seen about how to it a golf ball. "Upward striking emphasis". Holy shit dude... Fucking comedy gold.

I shouldn't have had the hot dog, wtf was I thinking? Actually I know what I was thinking, "hey this place is fancy, I bet it's some kind of a special hot dog". Nope. But otherwise, good times. How'd you shoot?

it does seem to me that club selection is one aspect of the game just like many others. i pick my clubs according to what distance i need if i hit a good shot and what my lie is like. i don't use them all frequently, but of driver, 3h, 4h, 5-pw, sw, 60 degree wedge, putter. the only one i don't use regularly is the 6i because 7i is my go to club.

you'll have to forgive me if i don't take your word as gospel. you're just too big of a dick for me to care. and it sounds like you're just about as big a dick on the golf course as you are at work. so i'll just keep plugging along and i'll improve 10 strokes or more in the next couple years with great excitement and a sense of achievement since i didn't start playing until well after 40 and you'll still be frustrated that you've already topped out.

bullshit dude! You have the same swing thoughts with a wedge as the driver? Hell no! Neither do I. Sure some of the principles are the same across all clubs, but the plane, stance, ball placement are all different across the clubs.

The swing is as fundamentally the same as it possibly can be. Whatever differentiation in swing technique is required by your body type, swing style, lack of ability/talent is the reason most people hit one type of club better than another. Then you try to correct and tweak and you can drive one day and chip another day, and it's really all bullshit. Look at the guys who hit the ball well all the time with every club. The swing style between clubs is nearly identical. Go youtube some Hogan. Dude is THE fucking example of how to swing any club the same way. Just because you or I can't do it correctly doesn't make it wrong.

And as far as thoughts go - absolutely. Close the club face, slow down the backswing, let the club off, swing down through the ball.
