Well, I've been thinking since I live in NH I now need to be prepared especially after this event.
I came around a corner on my mtn bike the other day and this HUGE turkey (w/ big sharp teeth) was standing there with his plumage raised up making him bigger than life itself. Right at that moment I wished I had a ak-47 mounted to my handlebars to blow that evilness to bits.
So now I have the local welder fabricating a mount for me so the next time I see a bunny, turkey, or wolf I'll be ready. stoked!

Has anyone skied the Dunning-Kruger couloir? This narrow slot, with a mostly north-facing aspect and a south-facing entrance typically holds good avalanche snow into late May.

The first descentionists in 1927 were an unlikely pair. Dunning, an expert skier with descents in the Catskills, Greens and 'Daks reported feeling "out of my element" and perhaps a bit "over my head." Kruger on the other hand, a novice skier who had joined Dunning on a lark (they were brother's in law) reportedly exclaimed that it was "too easy" (despite numerous minor injuries and near misses) and the challenge it presented was below his evident skill.

Here is the 1928 trip report from the New England Mountain Climin' Club.

Did this moron actually try to put his skis on with boots already clicked in? Can someone quote that post as I can't find it. Awesome stuff though, legendary thread, almost think it's an alias trolling.

Also lulz @ 160 race boots for a small manlet.

This is the stuff screenplays are made of. A kid named Fall To The Bottom is heckled on the internet. He can't stand the ridicule. So he trains like Stallone in Rocky and changes his screen name to Rise To The Top. Three years later he sweeps the gold in Special Olympics. But he gets disqualified and shamed because he faked his disability. He teams up with Lance Armstrong and starts a new hit internet site called Settled For The Middle.

Pretty sure he talks about this technique on a trip report from the previous season...

No Alias as the kid has a web presence going back a few years on gapicski and the story was widely covered by the local news.

The photo with the bunny trumped Slaagmaster's slack line intro shot from his living room.

Correctamundo. Here's the TR of his "successful" trip a year ago. http://www.epicski.com/t/120031/a-da...mount-adams-nh

My favorite part of it is his donning of sweatshirt and gloves for avy/death slide protection. Can't make this shit up.

Good work TBS. Your list of stuff for RT3's E-uncles was comprehensive and...well...Epic.

With the link to the 2013 TR on Epic I now have been able to answer one question I posed upthread - what time King Ravine goes into the shade. And that almost certainly is ... before RTTT started down it. IOW, whether or not the "unexpected" cloudiness caused the refreeze, by starting up at 11 a.m. and not starting down until 4 p.m. he faced refreeze and thus high-consequence long-sliding-fall hazard no matter the weather.

From his OP here, showing his intended line on 4/7/2014:

From his 4/14/2013 report - he said he'd started down at 3 p.m. from beneath the 7, skied to the ice caves, then booted for "the next quarter or so of a mile" before stopping to take this shot. That seems to indicate pretty strongly that it was no later than 4 p.m. when he shot this:

I'd really like to hear if RTTT still thinks it was prudent to be in a situation where he'd be starting his down at 4 p.m.

Way late to the party on this one. I've been too busy lately. First of all this thread is epic. Second and more importantly and I think I know this kid... He was at UNH the same time I was. If it is the person I'm thinking of I have some very serious doubts about parts of this story. OP where did you go to high school?

I have no doubt RT3 took his fall but at least a couple things in his email to ABC News set my bullshit detector a-clangin' when compared with his 2013 King Ravine TR:

He's indicated he's an undergrad (though on leave) and the Union Leader story said he's 22. In the ABC email he said he started backcountry skiing in junior year HS with a Tuckerman trip "and have gone up to the Presidential range ever since for the spring season to ski. I have skied Tuckerman Ravine, Huntington Ravine, and King Ravine multiple times over the past few years."

At the start of his 4/14/2013 TR he says: "I'd just like to add that it has been five years since I started ski racing, and as much as I love it, it has been five years since I have actually got in some skiing. With a tight schedule for racing in training, and having people down your throat about doing stupid stuff that could result in a season ending injury, it is IMPOSSIBLE to sneak off to the backcountry/side country to get in some play time. Yea, I do love racing, but being able to just go out and enjoy the day and not have to worry about results whatsoever would be nice. This trip would end the five year gap."

In the ABC email he also wrote: "I have skied King Ravine several times, and hiked it numerous times in the summer as well, so I am very familiar with the area." In the 2013 Epic TR on King Ravine he wrote: "I had been up there once before for a hike during Hurricane Lee in 2011, and fell in love." Maybe he skied there again last spring after that TR and hiked there multiple times last summer so his numbers start to add up, or maybe not. (btw, Lee was at its peak a tropical storm, not a hurricane, and a post-tropical low by the time it got to the Northeast.)

If I've learned anything here, it's that I should definitely start packing heat and carrying a machete to defend myself against moose, bears, rattlesnakes and mountain lions.

I cannot wait to use those jokes in the coming weeks as our snowpack here in the Great PNW returns to its liquid form below 4k.

Also, bF, what might be a samsqatch at Great Wolf Lodge is probably a MILF in lot 4. It's all a matter of perspective...

Wolfalanche, the much anticipated follow-up from the makers of Sharknado, focuses on the real life events of a daredevil ski racer/doctor-to-be in search of adventure, cool new injuries to show his friends and GIRLS. Instead of he is forced to use his smarts and experience to outwit nature and beast alike...

This only made it to 2 pages on epicski surprisingly. His actions were frowned upon but condoned over there.

Selected quote from RT3's Gapic thread:

"Zero avalanche danger that day. Zero. None. The slab that broke was no bigger than a 10ftx10ft sheet of light ice that formed that day from the re-freeze...."
