On the plus side, I'm getting better at tuning skis, and I'm riding (bikes) more than I ever have in winter, since moving to Reno.

I think it's time for a road trip to SLC.

Folks with XCD skis were accessing the 2-4" of fresh S of Carson Pass yesterday:

Steeper terrain is off-limits, here's EB and and the bony graveyard:

Thinking the same thing myself. Couldn't leave until the 20th, but hope to get there before the whole of the west dries out under the monster ridge they're forecasting. I would just be touring so any partners that want to ride together, lemmeno.

I've seen next years catalog...the Tahoe is now a carving ski.

I'm thankful I'm using my old Tahoes from 2008...its just way too tough skiing down Olympic, Oops etc on new skis.

    Some shots from yesterday...

Lower Oops...nice fresh line down to the left there...was skied prior to storm so skied very well considering this season.

Got the 2 year old on her new Moments...they are a bit short but pretty damn radical.

    Whitney condis

Thinking one of the best things to do with this wide-open weather window might be climbing some high peaks. Just curious if anyone knows what's up down at Whitney, specifically if there is enough snow to travel in and out on skis?

I think we're going 24th-26th, assuming the weather continues with this epic drought.

13/14 Tahoe Thread -- Raddest Thread On The Internets!!!

Anyone else besides me feel like CHP has really been lowering their tolerance for speeding in Amador County? Those new Ford Exploder cop SUVs must have some super fancy lasers in them, and the lightbar on the roof is almost invisible.

Just a word of caution not to get too crazy on the unpopulated stretches of 88, especially coming out of passing lanes, without being prepared ... My wallet is waaaaay lighter after 2 tickets from Amador County in the last 8 months after having none in the last 8 years. I got tagged in April between Ham's and Cooks, and yesterday coming into Martell before the turnoff onto Ridge. Each time was coming out of a passing lane where I was carrying a fair amount of speed.

Also, @bunnyascot crushes it even more than @monkeyascot

A factory-refurbed 8500 X50 is about the same price as one of those tickets. V1 is better, but twice the price.

Actually, a factory refurbished 8500 X50 is about HALF PRICE as one of those tickets.

No joke, first one was over $400 plus another $30 for "traffic school administrative fee" plus another $25 for online traffic school. For doing like 67 in a 55.

I swear by my Escort Passport. My lady will not give up the GPS memory feature of her 9500ix. That will be my next one, if my 8500 ever dies.

I have still seen nothing but Ka band guns on the CHP on 88, and they are leaving them on all the time so you can 'see' them around the corners.
If they are switching to Laser, we are #@c&ed. With that, the detector is just confirming that you were tagged, too late...

I've been in Ouray and Telluride the last week and the skiing (and ice climbing) has been good here. This coming week is all bluebird after it dumped a little over 12" during the weekend .

IE come out to the rockies, shit is good.

    Re Whitney....
I recall reading somehwere, maybe last week, (sorry cannot find link) that the Whitney Road is closed pretty far back from the TH.
A (dirt)bike might be the ticket for something up that road, or 120 or maybe just about anything that is seasonally closed right now. Anything facing even a little south has to be completely burnt out at this point, so I'd imagine hiking boots are sufficient for a lot of stuff.

Not very surprised to so many of you guys headed to SLC to find some decent snow. Where are you guys going to be skiing? I'll be at the Bird /Alta 16th - 20th. May make a stop in Park City one night to mingle with the wealthy and attempt the find my future ex wife.

How was chair 1 skiing? I fear that fall line into the ravine. It has tweaked my back more than once keeping a little one skiing across the hill and down hayflat. One of the toughest runs at the wood.

Resharpening the rock ski edges tonight.

It's flatter than it has been but still slopes a across the run. Hayflat is one sick zone

I'm heading to SLC too. Jan 29 - Feb 3rd. My friend out there says he's seen a ridiculous number of Tahoe / Mammoth skiers in the lift lines over the past few weeks.

Yeah. I've only picked up Ka on 88, but I don't drive it much. I got a LIDAR ticket super late at night in January 2008 with enginerd in my truck in the Vacaville area on 80. And I've gotten LIDAR hits in the Auburn area on 80 as well.

Back to skiing, I thought this was appropriate:
“And it never failed that during the dry years the people forgot about the rich years, and during the wet years they lost all memory of the dry years. It was always that way.” -Steinbeck

Cribbed from Jeff Mount, who is talking about the drought on Forum right now. Buddy near Shasta emailed me this morning:
"So this morning we recorded the barometric pressure, at 30.68 in, the highest I've seen and according to our pilot, the highest he recalls seeing it."

I may take a SLC trip as well soon, if much doesn't change. Or maybe a Bend area trip.

Man you snowlands guys......always such disrespect for laws and regulations. Even buying toys to deliberately circumvent them.

I say that with full jocularity just fyi.
