I have never skied in Tahoe before and was hoping for good conditions so I could check out kirkwood…. I guess that isn't going to happen. Also, I actually would have closer to a day and a half of skiing that I could get in if things work out as planned.

I live in Boulder which has plenty of art, culture, and food. Maybe not on the same magnitude as SF, but nothing to sneeze at either.

If you have rock skis, you can get a small taste of KW terrain off of chair 6 on the north facing slopes but that's about it.

i'd argue that it could be worth the trip just to see some of the rad terrain.

and if you have skis you don't care about, you could even ski some of it.

the fact that 6 is even spinning suggests to me there must be some fun to be had...

WTF, go up to Santa Rosa and enjoy:
Pliny the Elder on tap at Russian River Brew Co
Singletrack MTB at Annadel State Park
Wine tasting in the Russian River Valley
Dining and scenery in Jenner at the River's End Inn, where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean

It's true that you have very good singletrack, food, and beer in Boulder, but I've been there and trust me it's better here (okay the singletrack is debatable). You might even see a non-white person

Or go up to Tahoe and rent a fat bike for awesome lake scenery and good weather.

Santa Cruz surf and singletrack is doing pretty well right now too.

Boulder may be the most cultured spot in CO but compared to the bay its just a bunch of rich white people who like to look like rad outdoorsy people, listen to electronic music or bluegrass and think they know what a good burrito or sushi is.
Enjoy your time on the coast and the food because is sure does beat the WROD up here right now!

Holy sh*t, is that, is that, no way...

    Heavenly Forecast

    Snow in the forecast?? Weird!
"She loved snow...That was the simple objective, being airborne, up longer, higher, more casually and with more fuckoff elegance than anyone else...Such endeavours require a kind of egotism, a near autistic narrowness. Everything conspires against you, the habits of physics, the impulse to flee and you're weighted down by every dollop of commonsense ever dished up. Everyone will tell you your goal is impossible, pointless, stupid, wasteful. This idiot resolve is all you have."

Had a fun day on 6 & 11. Even later, there were nice lines of loose 'snow'.
It feels at least 20° colder tonight. Snowmaking is starting now. Which is good, since the afternoon wind scoured the top real well.

Did some adventure riding yesterday on Red Lake peak. Found some soft sugary snow & was able to ride all the way to the road, with a couple of walking sections. Thin coverage, for sure though.

It is like comparing Valencias and Navels when you are really looking for a Satsuma.

Surf is down. I would not bother traveling to SC. Unless of course you want to experience wannabe Hawaiian/Brazilian pulled up sick, cut off Ben Davis, Kaijin hoody, Consolidated trucker cap culture.

If you want to ski, ski. It is a fun thing to do. No, you are not going to get good conditions, and 90% of the hill is inaccessible, but the lake is pretty enough, you have a free pass, and you can see another region. Or visit another region. SF, Wine Country, SC, redwoods, beaches. There is plenty to do around here other than search out some culture. Go east for that.

Crushed SL turns on 6 & 11 all day on Saturday. Conditions are what they are but I had a lot of fun. Toward the end of the day the roller rocks started scattering more off the top of 6... my buddy took a core shot right down the gut of the groomer. Even if you are not planning to poke around, don't bring skis you care about.

The new snow on 6 had nice soft turns. The next gun was solid ice. Time for snowmaking upgrade.

Honestly, I know it sucks, but Northstar has about the best coverage and skiing right now with the epic pass. Its not really a good mountain anyway (kind of like the Keystone of Tahoe), but their snowmaking system is top notch. Its easy to get a lot of terrain open when all the runs are smooth and manicured and in the trees, but it would be cool to check out Kirkwood too just for the sights.

And really, I shouldn't be bringing traffic to the places I love, but Alpine has pretty good coverage right now if you can swing it. For some reason its like the siberia of north lake. Theres actually a pretty decent amount open for the lack of snow/snowmaking, and some pretty good steeps to be picked through. Even some cliffs/chutes/fun stuff, but I can't say how it compares to 6 at Kwood. And I can't say that the snow will be soft.

Oh yeah...and don't forget your mega rock skis, but if you're from Colorado thats all your skis...right??
mwuahaha welcome to our drought infused nightmare.

Appears from that chart that some years we have more snow than others

The chart seems to imply that total snowfall exceeds maximum depth in most years.

I can concur. What I don't understand is where the rockfall total is represented. This year feels like Forrest Gump, when he's talking about the rain, and mentions that in Vietnam it sometimes even rains from below. Except that here in Tahoe, the rocks are raining from below.

In other news, telemark "skiing" makes the boredom of groomers and kid-dodging positively scintillating. Thanks broken bindings!!
