    Toppling rocks

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...e-8888977.html

When I think of what a hiker looks like, I don't visualize these guys.

THIS EXACTLY..the church assigns them to volunteer work...most of the "scout leaders" are not even interested in the outdoors, they just have to fulfill their "church" obligations.

Im not a huge fan of the boy scouts in general as i've seen their idea of "leave no trace" and its not pretty, but its even worse here in Utah.

hope they put these guys to the fire.

Dude I just saw this too... Fucking assholes should be banned from National Parks for life and fined heavily. Fucking asshats. I really just wish somebody got pinned and lost a limb doing that shit so we could see the panic and regret firsthand.

I've seen some snippets of their facebook pages, and the responses they put to this. They deserve whatever punishment is coming their way.

Unfortunately, it's a state park, so I don't think there can be Federal charges.

It is uncanny how when some sort of outdoor jackassery goes down in UT it's usually the fucking Scouts. That and lightning strikes...which might just be nature's karmic smack down.

It made me kind of queasy to watch that video. A 20 million year old feature, quickly destroyed by a fat fuck bubba. It really summed up "Redneck Man's" relationship with his environment.

The level of stupidity captured is stunning. Did they even consider why it is a protected park in the first place? And then to put the video on Facebook? So much awesome stupid.

You guys realize that if a 350 lb. mouth breather pushed a 800 lb rock over and it moved 8 feet, that it was probably going to fall this winter in a storm. Maybe even just in a light breeze. Erosion happens. It's not like he was using a pry bar, or any kind of tool. He just kinda flung his body at it.

Still a jackass, yes. Worth all of the self-righteous uproar? Get over yourselves.
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

Probably not. That's the cool thing about hoodoos and balanced rocks. Millions of years of wind and water and the perfect balance and density of the rock and soil create them. Fat fuck bubbas are not erosion.

    So you're a geologist?

Edit: Deleted because it was a reasonable discussion of an unreasonable position. Sapp can just bleive whatever he wants.

Millions of years of setup for a brief stint where they are perfectly balanced and awesome, and then they fall on their own. FFB accelerated the process, but watch it again. He pushed for about half a second, without anything behind him. Not exactly a heavy duty lift here; that one was primed to go, and soon. If he struggled for 10 seconds, then yeah, it had some more life in it.

MY point: yes he accelerated it's destruction. Yes, he's a jackass. Was it going to go down all on it's own fairly soon? Probably pretty likely. These awesome rock things go down.

Yeah, and geologic time dictates that now and 250 years from now are almost the same point on the line.... but whatever.

Sounds like you are speaking from experience...knocked over a few of these, huh?

Take a look at J.W. Powell's photos of the Grand Canyon, and compare them to the retakes 100 years later. in most case every single rock is in exactly the same place. Ready to fall over on its own on a geological scale can still mean thousands of years.

But, I agree, still jackasses. I say make the fuckwits put it back.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Geologic time yes, but at this point this is a structure subject to wind loading, not as much the measuring movement of mountain ranges. Wind loading vs. the amount of force that guy put on it, this was a 40 mph wind away from falling.

    Very simple explaination: http://www.wikihow.com/Calculate-Wind-Load

0.00256*(wind speed in mph)^2*drag coefficient*surface area = force applied to rock. My generous assumptions: FFB pushed with 200 lbs of force, a drag coefficient of 1.0 and 50 sqft of applied surface area is equal to a 40 mph wind load. Maybe the wind never blows here so a 40 mph wind during a winter storm is unreasonable, I don't know. I saw mountains and assumed the wind blows in the winter.

Sorry to disrupt the circle-jerk of righteous indignation.
