Anyone know how to find historic snow stake data at AMC Huts / Trails? I'm specifically looking for Carter Hut.

    THIS JUST IN.

if the mountain wasn't rad enough already featuring the most acreage, the steepest terrain, and the only above treeline lift served skiing in the east, the loaf has yet again expanded it's terrain.

I think I may have to go condo shopping

Anything that's on the trail map will attract the duffers in full force. Don't know if opening that was a blessing or a curse.

The one time I was out west (where they have the gate things), there were still people beyond that point that couldn't even make parallel turns, not to mention it looks like this new stuff at da Loaf can be accessed by lift.

It does look like a sweet area though.

Damn, I need to get back to the Loaf
That's a sweet area, it can get pretty rowdy back there. Back when I was in college, longer ago than I'd like to admit, we used to hit that then connect back to the bobsled style run in the trees skier's right of ripsaw (jewel of the Nile, I think). And we skied it rog style, no less. Straight skinny skis and no helmets, though we did wear goggles, so I'm not sure if we were doing it right

But yes, putting a gate back there will probably only weed out some of the joeys, not all of them.

that "new" terrain is a fabulous extension to the steepest liftserved/short bootpack terrain in the east. the backside fields hit a good 45+ degrees down the gut. coming over the top of the main pitch is almost like coming over the lip at tux. everything just falls away. the new terrain has to be at least 40 degrees.

best part of the new terrain there and all of bracket basin is that it will cause many of the skiers to overlook the stuff that's been getting skied for decades right down the front face of the mountain. love that

lift and short (5 minute) bootpack.

It does look like a sweet area though.

nice i do wear gogs a coupla/few times a season at the resort when it's puking. almost never on washington in winter(see vid link below for a glimpse at a cold cloudy windy typical rog style day on george). i find them to be very restrictive, limit vision/senses, and can fog/ice up. helmets agrivate me whan my touring partners wear them. we'll be up on a ridge with the wind blowing and when you try to communicate with a helmet'd gog wearing partner, half the time they can't hear what yer saying cuz it's all muffled from the ear coverage, and they have to contort to see you speak cuz the gogs cut the peripheral vision.

    GET BACK TO DA LOAF!!!

Does anyone have pics or footy of the that area? Can't find anything on the tube, but then again I don't really know what I'm looking for.

here's some ok ghey-bro footy. steeps start after 2 minutes and you get a good sense of the pitch at minute 3 and beyond. so great back there. new terrain makes it quite a bit longer

Depends on how well they map it. I've found that the herd aren't too interested in dropping through gates when they know they will have to do some work to get back to the lift. Aka the Montezuma hike back gates and the stuff further out in Brackett and Burnt already.

I agree, it definitely doesn't look like a straight shot back. If the skis have to come off at any point that is a major deterrent for most folks.

Any east coasters recognize these trails? My mother painted this after photographing it from the air, back in the 80's. I'm guessing it's Sunapee, Gunstock or Pats Peak since she was flying in NH, but not sure... thx:

Definitely not Sunapee, looks pretty close between Pats and Gunstock.

Thx, I'm thinking Gunstock, too. Especially with the big peaks to the north.

Here you go from last Reggae Weekend (source...Sugarloaf chat room):

Good things going on up there. Last weekend, they announced a replacement for the King Pine chair, for next year, with a new fixed grip quad.

Kind of weird replacing that lift with another fixed grip quad as that is what is there now.

Nice to know Sugarloaf owns the property and it is not trespassing anymore. Easy place for people to get hurt and it will be very difficult to transport them out. Hopefully it is not like SR when they put the cliffs trail on the map only to have it permanently closed-at least every time I have been there it is closed.

wonder if they'll build it to load lower down the hill. that chair is pretty old.

that's the best part. they put it on the map and keep it closed so that those "in the know" can ski it minus the masses all season. honestly tho, the cliffs trail is a big nothin really. short shot. that loaf area looks kinda thwacky/short. wonder how worth it it'll be to take it down past the normal stuff. how much extra vert?

Still on the fence about the Magic pass, sure its cheaper (break even point looks to be about 8 days) if I ski there a lot this year, but being new to the area I'm thinking a bit of exploring is in order.

Even if I miss the discounted price, break even only goes to ~9 days....

You're living in Southern VT? I'd get the pass. Magic is definitely worth 10 days, especially if you're nearby and think you'll do a lot of your skiing close to home. The only way I wouldn't would be if I thought I'd drive to Sugarbush and beyond most weekends. Or you like groomers. It isn't really that good for that.

If you don't buy the pass, check out Liftopia. They often have pretty good deals for all but the busiest times.
