Gardnerville is worse... I wore a respirator all day just to work outside and can't even ride. It sucks.

Yeah, I tripped down to Reno today and it was crazy how hazy it was. When I left Truckee around 1 pm it was blue skies, but once in Reno the sun was like an electric maraschino cherry on fire. The Truckee River downtown glowed red. It was like that all day and seemed worse in the evening around 7 pm, since the haze now stretched all the way back to Truckee. Crazy.

The Lake Tahoe area was upgraded Tuesday from the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category to “unhealthy” air quality, according to the El Dorado County Air Quality Management District. The air quality index was reported by officials to be 181, the upper end of the unhealthy designation.

around truckee the smoke comes and goes--pretty nice today in the Martis Valley, hazy but no smoke smell this afternoon at Donner. It all depends on the winds. The other morning looking across the lake was the equivalent of snow at 2inches/hr.
Folks have lost their homes, businesses are closed and folks are out of work, thousands of homes are threatened. Let's not feel too sorry for ourselves about the smoke.

It's gorgeous in Truckee today, so far. Anyone trying to figure out what it might be like in the hills can check out this page on the NWS site.

Today it shows the smoke from the Rim Fire going east of Tahoe (but Reno still looks bad as MTT probably knows). A little smoke in the pic from the American. Of course things can change quickly with a minor change in wind direction.
I didn't want to smoke out the 2013-14 thread.

Smoke got a lot better this afternoon on the S Shore and in Gardnerville. I've opened the doors for the first time in quite a few days. Here's hoping it will stay nice so I can ride tomorrow!

I need a ruling. due to my shinjury in early july I haven't been ab le to get my august turns in, which will bring a 4-5 year run of monthly turns to a halt. i think i might be able to ski now, but have to be out of my current dwelling by tomorrow at midnight, and i have to work. I might be able to string together at least 10 awesome turns on dirt over at twin peaks in a quick period tomorrow between cleaning toilets and trips to the storage. would it still count? would dropping a ledge help?

I would say your Streak is broken. and there is nothing wrong with that.
I hope your new digs are OK. Moving sucks

On a side note, I am heading out to ride the bike for a bit. the sky is clear right now.
It's a pretty dam nice morning. I suspect the smoke will roll in in the afternoon as usual.

I'mma have to side with MTT on that ruling.

Me'n Vets live by the 10 turns on snow rule, albeit those 10 turns can be in any combination, even going so far as to ski a 1-turn patch 10 times. Turns All Year (the website based out of Washington) merely defines a consecutive month streak as "at least one ski trip in each month of the year". While it's obvious that they are talking about snow skiing/riding, they don't actually specify that...they also go on to say "skiers differ in the criteria they use for what passes as a countable ski trip." In regards to this, my patch-skiing/turns-all-year buddies in Wyoming live by the 10 consecutive turns rule, meaning if you can't ski something that's at least 10 turns long then it doesn't count. That rule is kinda hard to abide by here in the Sierra, especially if we get a low snow year. Which is largely why me'n Vets go by the ruling that as long as you're making turns on snow of some kind (i've heard legend of a guy who once bribed a zamboni driver at the local ice rink to make him a 50 foot berm that he skied down to keep his streak) then it counts; no snow=no go, bro.

fwiw, Vets thinks there's still some teeny tiny patches up on Roundtop...

Mrs. Vets and I took our dogs on a recon hike near Caples Lake this afternoon. Here is a report:
Method Man has shrunk into a little dot of snow that might offer around two hop turns per run. What I could see in East Bowl was a little patch below a cliff and above a rather long scree field. October Patch looks narrower, but relatively longer than anything else nearby. Gone2Alpine and I will be setting out for September turns on the October Patch tomorrow.

All the smoke is in Yosemite finally! Nasty dark day in the valley today, ash floating around. Made for some cool headlamp night biking, kinda like when Powdork puts his Subie into Millenium Falcon mode. Speaking of Subies, mine wouldn't start today for the first time in ... Ever. Dohhhhhhh.

Gorgeous at KW yesterday, but smoky now. Not too bad though. Gonna go for a hike and hopefully not destroy our lungs.

Also, you could buy my Cherokee...

Curious JONG here, the wife says she'd like a Tahoe vacation in mid-Oct at a "nice stone lodge with a view of the lake." I've always been on the total dirtbag plan when I went to Tahoe, but I'd kind of like to avoid the casino hell strip. Anyone got any suggestions? I'm already looking at the Ritz-Carleton - that looks like it's up at Heavenly? Any other reccos?
