The muni I played every day was a fine course and home to the local championships plays 6400 yds from the tips and it's already been lengthened.

Sure, the length of those courses are still ok but they weren't built assuming some fat ass puffing a cigar could drive the ball 280 yds. Back in the 60's and 70's anything over 200 yds was a big drive. Nicklaus used to hit the ball "250" and par fives were rarely hit in two on the PGA tour. You could make those courses a lot tougher by adding traps and hazards everywhere but that costs a lot money. It used to be distance was the equalizer for golf courses. What happens when drivers are hitting the ball 40 yards farther in 20 more years? Why did the R&A regulate square grooves? It would have been easier to regulate golf ball spin rates. Remember Sam Snead with his between the leg putter? At least they banned that for whatever reason right away and didn't wait 40 years to make a move.
Meh...buildings use to be shorter and cars used to be slower...whateves. Generally fat guys with cigars can't drive the ball 280 and they shoot 95 with 5 mulligans...nothing has changed. Still just a person and a golf course.

On my course, I am better from the tips than I am from the Blues, because a lot more trouble is in play from the blues...in 20 years, if I am driving it 40 yds further because of technology, I guess I will be fucked from the blacks and will still suck.

Only thing that bugs me about the long putters is them being used for the 2-club lengths, but they could just change that rule so it has to be driver and all is ok by me. PGA is opposed to the ban, it will be interesting to see if they end up with two sets of rules...

Ha, I made 3 on #5 isn't that the 1st par5?looked at the card forgot about #2 Played that beast from the tips every fucking hole. I spun my 3rd shot off the green on 18. Somehow it stopped a foot from the water. Yes, I took my shoes of and played it. I think I shot 84-85 but hell with a course rating of 78+ and a slope over 140 it's not that bad.

that's the part of your game that will change when you have a bunch of buds you golf with a lot. For example, two weekends ago, all four of us sprayed our drives on number two into the water. We looked around, nobody was behind us, our beers were full, life is good. Mullys for all? wtf, why not, we just all re-drove and played the hole. Not even close to legal. But fun. If i was keeping a handicap i would just add two to my final tally and count that.

i was just kidding. but i never take mulligans. part of the exercise for me is getting the first ball in play. i only have one friend who plays golf and he's a shit-talker, so it's not a big deal. what we will do is if we find water on a par 3 we'll agree that we're playing the drop but also take another shot from the tee just so we can execute the shot. during my last round at heron lakes, i hit two of my best shots on the second tee shot on par 3s even though i said i was taking the drop.

edit: i suppose the longer i play the more likely i find other regular partners (even though i like playing alone), so i can see your point in that situation.

How are the greens? I have some buddies coming up so we are going to play 72 this weekend. Schaffers/Gray's, Schaffers/Old Greenwood. Thought about a Coyote Moon round instead. Schaffer's is in great shape right now, though the green's are a bit furry.

The greens were slow and bumpy. I think they airified 3 weeks ago. They were not unplayable by any means, but definitely slow.

Any of you saps play with large(er) grips? I've gotta a couple of big-ass hands and have always played standard size. Never really been a problem before, but I feel like things are getting a little loosey-goosey of late and my fingers are starting ache a little bit. But at the same time I'm a little paranoid about making a wholesale switch. Did you try a club or two to first, or just jump all in?

Big ass hands? Not wholesale anything, do it. Mid-size even jumbo with the real big hands, with a couple of wraps for the big hands. Or even an extra wrap under the righthand ( tapered grips).

There is a proper fit, with the right grip.

Jumbo? We used to call them "arthritic" grips. Damn cold/flu/rain. Haven't even practiced chipping in two weeks.
A few people feel the rain. Most people just get wet.

    Wooley,
You missed a nice round today. Nobody on the course on the back 9. Finished at 830.

This could go under the shit that annoys you thread but I will post it here. Played Bellevue Muni because it is close to the golf store and I could walk on. I expected slow play but 30 plus minutes per hole. Got to the 7th hole after almost 3 hours & there were 3 foursomes (12 people) waiting on the tee of box. I just said screw this and went to the range . I told the dude at the pro shop and he at least comped me a bucket of balls. The only time I have ever run into anything approaching that was in Coronado in CA. A bunch of retired people that hit 70 yard drives so that was to be expected

Old folks are not the problem anymore, I don't think (anyone else seeing this?). The last ~10 rounds I have played with 60+ men and women, they are fanatical about pace of play...they just motor (in Palm Springs, we had trouble keeping up with people, and my wife and I get around our course in ~3.5hrs walking). I think the problem is morans that play beyond their means, and wait for driveable Par 4s and 5s. There is nothing more infuriating that a 5+ hour round...

On another note, finally had my first solid mental round of 2013 yesterday...other than a double on 2 when I was fixated on getting through a 5-some in front of us, avoided anything worse than a bogey (I am usually good for a couple triples when I mentally disappear). 38-40, and left a lot out there. Coming into the groove.

WTF. I have had the worst month of golf in my life. Slump, mental ,physical I have no fucking clue. I can basically play every day this season yet things are getting worse every day. New driver and new irons could be part of it but a small part I think. Last year was playing a 12, now I'm playing 16 and trending towards 20. I'm thinking of taking a 2 week break. Anybody else walked away for a while?

Figure out where you're losing all those strokes. My first advice would be keep the driver in the bag or remove it completely. Find one shot you can hit straight: hybrid, 6 iron, three wood. I've never felt the need to walk away but have felt the need to make a change.

    Slow play:

I think the number one cause of slow play is people simply don't know how to play ready golf. Especially when they putt, they stand around while one guy putts and don't prepare for their turn until after each person putts. Same when they hit tee balls they discuss every shot before hitting the next one. Also marshals that don't do their job.

On muni course the problem is uncontrolled tee times. They only consider if the first tee is open and not where the bottlenecks are.

i'd take a two week break from keeping score and mix it up- hit the range, play a red/white/blue 3 club 'tourney' with some buds, play a little 9-holer, or amp the fuck outa the drinking.

Our muni is all foresomes in peak time, so using the first tee kinda works. But like you say, as soon as the dude that just hit the 90 degree slice 190 yards waits for the group on the green 250 out, the pace is fucked...

i like to break things up by playing a par 3 course -- everything between 40 and 90 yards.

I hear you. I have been taking lessons, playing 4 rounds per week. and hitting hundreds of balls and the swing changes that my golf instructor give me only hold for about 36 hours then I get caught between my old swing and the new one. I am having 20 stroke swings right now and feel like taking a break. I feel like once I hit a few bad shots I start standing over the ball trying to fix my swing on course. Work just got busy so I will get a much needed break from golf to clear my head. I think I need a hypnotist to play better lol. I always keep coming back for more though
