f.... I knew I'd posted it before, but thought it was on the Ullrfest thread... early Alzheimers is kicking in.


I did design and helped build this "beautiful" bridge (and never posted it!). It's to access another four acres of farm fields and comply with wetlands restrictions:

Yeah Ice, each end sits a solid 16 cubic yds of concrete, so no way is it moving for a few years. I hope the town renews our lease, but most likely not an issue... I like to build things to last!

our house was built in '74. the front doors I have always hated as they were painted steel with frosted windows. searched for new doors but WOW! they are very expensive... +2-3k for solid wood of average design.

got a wild hair last winter and found some old solid oak church doors from a refurb for $200. HOURS in the garage last year, cutting, sanding, stripping, sanding, staining and they came out great.....

could not tell you the hours I put into these doors and how high I got sniffing stain remover but these doors rock!!!

would love to find an old school peep hole door out of iron to finish them off.... search continues

and as I tell my wife.... think of all the sinners that have walked through those doors

I didn't like any of the large pre-made mailboxes I could find, nor the price, so I cut and welded a 1" angle frame and attached stuff I had laying around, including the old mailbox door and sides for the panel tops:

^^^^ I dont know wood for shit. So far it is 2 - 2. 2 votes for fir, 2 votes for oak of people who have seen them. Doors had a real heavy laquer on them before I stripped them and I put on a light red oak stain.

I bet your right though....

I'll just keep calling them my sinner doors!!!!

There's a lot of capacity and the top flips down flat and flush with the top's bottom so the delivery person can reach in through their vehicle. Be sure your buddy checks with the local postal powers that be in the event they have a problem with an 'unsanctioned' box. Ours is official, 'cause it says 'US Mail' on the reused door.

I keep expecting the plow to biff it one of these days, even though I built a turn in for the carrier and the box off the road a few feet.

BTW, your door looks more like fir than oak to me as well. Tough to see the grain in the images.

yeah.... there were days that I just hated working on it so I skipped it, thus the whole winter time table. But you'll be surprised what a few beers, bowls and music will get you.....

Yep. Doug fir or something similar (they look like my old Heart Pine floors). Not Oak. I think that people confuse everything that is quartersawn with Oak. I wish you could get wood like that these days.
