All the good bars and restaurants in town got theirs this week. None for me. Looks like I'm paying bar prices again this year for it. . .

"a few bottles" !!!! Shit you cannot find that stuff on the shelves here in state gov't controlled ABC (alcohol beverage control) stores. And the waiting list ? I'm on one now into my third year. The restaurant across the street usually had a bottle of 20 yr. old that I could hit from now and again. They didn't get one this year. Oh well, there's plenty of other great bourbon out there that is accessible and not the at the criminal price point some are getting.

That's the bummer (the price gouging)... because the price for everything, (except the 23 year maybe) is really reasonable if you can find it. $100 for two bottles of 12 isn't bad.. same price point as a basil hayden or angel's envy...

They have a place on their website that you can report the price gouging. As far as the waiting lists, I think it's just like some season tickets, they are willed to the next gen...

The whole Pappy situation has become a complete shit show. Folks that don't even really drink bourbon are looking for trophy bottles to add to their well stocked home bars.

The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection is released every year right along side the Pappy. If you call you LLS and ask them nicely they might actually give you one if you don't even mention the word Pappy during the conversation. This year the ones to watch from the collection are the George T Stagg and the William Larue Weller. The tricky part is that these (and the other 3 whiskeys in the collection) are even more limited than the Pappy offerings. But since fewer people are all hot and bothered for them you might actually be able to get a bottle if you start searching yesterday.

All is not lost MS. We'll see what happens next week. Hopefully I'll have some good news for you.

Even Rye got hot this last 2 or 3 years... it's all cyclical.. remember how many people got on the single malt bandwagon through the early 2000s.

I've been meaning to pick up some Michter's to try, based on something you posted. That Taos Lightning distillery that I've been pimping has a couple of very worthy ryes...if you can find them:

Michters has been in short supply in Denver recently (Cruiser?). I have three quarters of a bottle left, but will be panicked if I can't find another back up bottle soon. Been drinking the Leopold Brother's Maryland Style Rye whiskey. Similar to Michter's, but a tad sweeter - kind of if Michter's and Bourbon had sex and this was their love child.

It's available but it's slow. There's too much good whiskey for less than $50 for a lot of folks to drop the coin on Michters. Willet 5yr rye @ ~$45 for instance.

The biggest issue with rye is that most folks who are buying it are planning on making a Manhattan and not sipping it neat. So there's a limited amount if interest in premium stuff which makes it difficult to stock many of them.

Ok Cruiser, I trust your judgement. You told me I probably couldn't fully appreciate the Grand Cru that I had and you were mostly right. The whole Pappy thing is too hyped. I've been really happy with the Buffalo Trace(barrel select) that I've been drinking. I would like to get a nice bottle of something unique though. Here's the question. I want something in the $50 range and I want to know where to buy it in the Denver(north) area. Any help would be appreciated.

I dunno. There's no shortage of quality whiskey in that price range. That said, your money might be better spent by heading off to Pints Pub or the Bull and Bush for a flight or two of good domestic whiskey first. Both those places will pour you small portions of multiple whiskies so that you can evaluate them side by side. Once you get an idea of what you're loving then you can go seek out a bottle at a LLS. Tell the bartender that you want to buy a good bottle of bourbon but that you want to try sipps of a few of them first. If it's not super busy I'm sure they'll be happy to accommodate you.

I've been drinking a good bit of WL Weller 12yr wheated bourbon lately because I find it to be a good value and a style that I like. But I sure don't mind a sip of something with a little more heat (like Rittenhouse or Buffalo Trace) from time to time either. I'm lucky in that sense though because I have a job that affords me the luxury of not having to invest in a bottle to find out if I like it.

Thanks for the input. I figured out that what I really wanted was advice on where to find/try some good bourbon. My go to in that price range is stil Baker's. With some branchwater.......

I went to four different liquor stores today and couldn't find any of the special edition Four Roses, major bummer. Did scout out some places that had Jefferson’s Presidential 18, which is old Stitzel-Weller juice. I'm gonna hang on to see if I can score some Pappy 15/20 and if not I'm all about the Jefferson. Pretty much written off getting any of the BTAC stuff, for some reason that stuff seems to go faster than the Van Winkle stuff does.

Went liquor shopping for clients last night, which is fun. Picked up a couple of nice bottles for myself, including Whistlepig 10 year and Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye (which I am saving for a hut trip in January).

Cracked the Whistle Pig last night and was really pleased.

I'll be interested to hear your feedback on the Handy. I was kind of on the fence about buying myself one but I haven't pulled the trigger yet because I still have some hope that a little more Stagg will come our way next week.

I can say that it is the darkest rye I have seen. Never had a unfiltered barrel proof rye (only Bourbon), so excited to try it out.

FINALLY found two bottles of the Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition. Snagged em up and another Rittenhouse BiB for good measure. I got to talking to the spirit's manager and used Cruiser's bash pappy strategy and the manager went in the back and pulled out a new Eagle Rare. Everything was going smooth until it rang up for $100!!

Told the guy for that price I'd hang out for a GTS or WL Weller, maybe a Saz/Handy. The weird thing is I snagged the Four Roses for around $75 a pop and wiskyadvocate has it's MSRP as $90?

From what I get having spoke to all the places about the BTACs is that the stores don't know when they're going to get it or even how many, just sporadically basically. is that your experience too Cruise?
