Right on, if I end up down there I'll hit you up and we can make some turns Wed or Thurs.

My biggest concern right now is ground clearance with my car. AWD and Blizzaks don't matter if roads are unplowed with 3' of heavy snow + branches + who knows what else on the roads. Kinda wish I still had my Tacoma.

    Yeah, I hear ya.

Hoping the stuff that needs to fall is clear by the time we get there Tuesday night. Rain/snow starts tonight, high wind and heavy winds pick up tomorrow night. From everything I've read in the last 3 days, access is easier and more important into Canaan Valley. If there isn't much snow and the road are fine, we could end up at Snowshoe.

I have a car. Not sure if the Sentra with Ontario plate will stop in CNY and if we change vehicule? I've driven up to Shames in a couple inches of fresh snow on a rental escort with 4-seasons tires, anyway, that is why arriving Tuesday would seem to be safer for clearer WV roads.

Sorry about that crank. I become incoherent with lack of sleep - please see earlier post regarding the snoring wife and missing 3.5 hrs of sleep this morning! Better now after a nap. Anyway, yes a ride might be welcomed if you have room. Sorry my Pathfinder is not ready for prime time right now - needs suspension work. Otherwise I would offer to drive. Catch up soon. Thanks.

That sounds fun. On the one speed with a 36:20...as long as it's not silly granny gear smoking climbs. It's rifle season in VT, not so in NH? Would drive over Tuesday for a ride. Trailwork ends tomorrow for the season, interview for winter work is next monday, I could likely make that. Love to get a tour around there...heard great things for years about trials there.

Looks like the former could be reasonably assured by the end of Tuesday, then I drive down there Wednesday, after which the rain might mix in on Thursday once I'm ready to ski -- oops!
I'm concerned that showing up in WV with MA plates & ski gear might be like, oh, sort of similar to, maybe, heading over to Aleppo to road bike ... ok, so that analogy could use some refinement, but you get the idea.
BTW, maybe this has already been posted, but this is the most detailed I've seen:
    http://www.wsaz.com/blogs/brandonsbl...176162291.html
... with bottomline summary (confirmed with a 3:30 update):
    *****
"Every place from Beckley up to Davis, WV (2500' elevation) should be preparing for a possible shut down. The number of lines down out that way could rival that of the June 29th derecho event, though structure damage is not going to be as much of an issue. Gas up the generator, and have more handy. The bulls-eyes for this event are in the Canaan Valley, Pickens, and Snowshoe areas of West Virginia. Those higher peaks face the expected wind flow just like they always do for lake-effect snows, and given their elevation they will get below freezing and keep the slop more fluffy. The only question mark is how close the low gets to Canaan... Too close, and you're rain, even up there."

One final thought (before bringing inside the remaining toddler toys from the yard that could become threatening projectiles with high winds): this evening on the drive home from visiting Grandma in upstate NY we saw at least seven tree service trucks with midwestern plates. Our neighborhood's transformer was finally replaced last November (after six days w/o power) by a midwestern crew, so nice to see the troops getting into position ahead of time.

Jonathan, we saw a crew from New Brunswick as we were driving back from the Wicked Ride of the East today. They'd been driving about 11 hours so far and still had a ways to go as they were on their way to NY. Damn.

If you ever drive through Western New Brunswick, don't bother stopping, but if you must, there is Potato World. Also, if you're lucky, you might see a fat guy in fatigues riding his bike in circles in his driveway. [/WESTERNNEWBRUNSWICKGUIDEBOOK]

Not really into riding where folks are trying to hunt. Bow season is quiet enough to sneak out for mid-day rides but once rifle starts I try and stay away. We have all year to ride, they have a few weeks to hunt. Plus, there are enough spots that don't get hunted with rifle to keep riding if the weather permits.

Let me help out. I believe what you are trying to say is that you are torn between a) the lust for early season turns, b) the natural (and highly reasonable) desire to ensure the safety of your family and property, c) a reluctance to drive through one shitstorm into a potentially more dangerous one, d) facing the reality that you will be entering someone else's disaster area for the selfish purpose of recreation and, finally, e) putting yourself in harm's way and possibly adding to the burden of the emergency services folks in WV.

Sorry to be a wet blanket but that is the way I see it. Maybe a better analogy would have been traveling to Vermont to go whitewater boating immediately after Irene.

    Exactly!
(Although item "b" in your list will be easily resolved one way other another by the end of tomorrow.)
Meanwhile, awoke this morning to: a very pleasant day outside! But looking at the radar map, won't last for long...

I wanted to post: "Mr. Multiglisse hates skiing."

But, instead, I decided to post about wanting to post it because everything he wrote is correct, even if he does hate skiing.

    Good luck everybody.

i hear ya. looks like it's muzzle loader season starting nov 3rd. less of a concern there, but still risky i guess. trails could be a mess after all the wind too, but i'd still be game if the weather's nice. seems we'd have a good time riding together on our simple speeds. it'll happen eventually.

ISBD, I surely love skiing but not that much. For about 10 seconds I considered joining MadPat on his epic adventure but then the risk management side of my brain kicked in. It will be a hell of a TR if he pulls it off.

Words to live by: it'll shine when it shines. I can wait.

Other that lost Mount Antoine in Mattawa, Ontario???? Who knew? Playing it safe, but I'll add the avy gear in my stuff. New York State tonight, drive around the West side of Sandy. We'll see when we do. Who knows, we might end skiing in Colorado.

Hey if we lose power and it looks like the shop's grid will be down for a while I'm in. Otherwise my production schedule adherence is currently dependent on the cracking of whips and such.

If I can sneak away for a few days though, I'm down and my gear is packed and waiting by the door. I know others who are on the same page so at this point we really need to see how she pans out. I'd say it's not looking awesome for a road trip right now with 10" of rain between here and there though fwiw. VT last year taught me a lot in regards to post flood travel and getting turned around or stopped altogether in an unfamiliar area can change everything.

It does make me think of ISBD and Naton abandoning their vehicle and skinning to TC and I for the goods I think two seasons ago though where there's a will there's always a way.

Oh and the footprint of this is enormous. Eye is down by Delaware and a block island buoy is recording 17+ footers and 113mph winds. Even the outskirts of this storm are packing a massive punch so be careful if you're trying to juke the edge. Bridge overpasses might be a good idea in a big band if you're on the hwy.
