Just got off the phone with Baxter State Park. Snowmobiles are NOT allowed on the Roaring Brook rd, which brings you to the logical place for skiing. The approach remains 16+ miles.

When i called them last week i specifically asked about the cabins and the run in...was told I could leave my sled at trail head and skin in 2.5 or so.....Also whats the name of the film that came out about the group of dudes from Vt skiing 5 mountians on the east coast..i have it and cant remember the name... grey lock, george, mans, marcy and katadin (sp).......anyway they use sleds to get back so far and the road was shitty as hell melted ,so couldnt go back the distance they wanted .... either way it will get figured out.....

I hope you're right. Did you specify which cabin? Most cabins are along the Tote rd which allows snowmobiles. But the bunk house nearest the good skiing is in the other direction.

Good job GA. Mom kicked it and so have some friends, but it's never a given.

The movie about skiing the 5 EC mountains is from the Meatheads and called Epoch. Frankly, I think it is their best work to date.

Did someone say snow? It's sticking from about 3000' up.

Its called Epoch, and its a meat heads film. They hired a guide who is authorized by the park. Similar to getting to the Mines area in the chic chocs, certain guides have park permission to tow you and your gear out there. Missed your call the other day. Try me today when you are free

Edit: Big D, got the PM and will bring Epoch

The film is called Epoch. I agree with Atkinson that it's among MHF's best.

After doing some research, I've come to learn that the Park Tote Road has been available for public snowmobile usage since 1981. This road passes directly adjacent to the Abol Trailhed. The road however is un-groomed, and so once winter takes hold, and snow pot-holes build up, the road is supposedly pretty brutal on a 'bile, hence almost no one rides it. This may be what gives the impression that it is closed to public traffic in winter.

A Representative from the area is actually pushing a rules change with the BSP Authority to have the road groomed, and ease snowmo traffic. The first hearing was in March 2012. Some research has been done since then, and soliciation of comments has been underway all summer. A progress report on the findings, and perhaps even an actionable recommendation is due to the Authority this fall. To me though, this seems irrelevant since a 'bile can now be driven (however slowly) to Abol... COOL!!

On the other hand The Roaring Brook Road is closed to public snowmobilie access, and doesn't appear to be making any progress towards public access. So shortening access to Chimney Pond area doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon (unless you go over The Saddle or something like that with your gear)

Video of yesterdays fun, appearances by JonS, RangerJake, and Femaleskibum. While conditions weren't superb, it was fun to get out, stretch the legs and make some turns. Can't wait to get out again!!

... And thank the almighty spaghetti monster for that!

I never understood the use of an alias screen name to make fun of someone. I always preferred to just say whatever so you know who it's coming from and who exactly to give shit back to. We all know I have no problem making fun of Rog from time to time, and I don't hate the guy by any stretch of the imagination so it kind of cracks me up that there's a cyber grassy knoll gunman of sorts taking cheap shots from the shadows that is just oh-so-butthurt, yet unwilling to entertain the ignore function's glorious effecetiveness.

Rog's got a great life and I give him props for it... But that doesn't mean I can't make fun of him for RogBlogging 38x a day about whatever comes to mind.

So yeah... If you can't play ball, get off the court!

So yes, those first turns were a bit of a shocker, but once that thin firm layer melted away, and then once we smoothed it out a bit with our skiing, got decent enough.
But even as the snow quality improved on each subsequent run, I felt like the thin sections were getting even thinner. Glad I had the daughter pick-up deadline to force me to get there first thing in the morning, as by late afternoon it was probably getting really rough. Glad we got there while the getting was still good!
