my dad bought me "Be the Ball: A Golf Instruction Book for the Mind" by Charlie Jones and Kim Doren for xmas. the title is a little self important because it's mostly a collection of short quotes and stories, but it has some good stuff and i've dog-eared probably 50 pages.

i also read Golf and the Spirit: Lessons for the Journey by M. Scott Peck, who wrote The Road Less Traveled. it was a little too god-oriented for me, but it also had a lot of good stuff, particularly from the perspective of a man nearing the end of his life.

i've got my dave pelz short game bible and the rule book with me and i have $25 to blow on an e-book for the ipad, so i'm going to through this thread again and see what you guys have recommended as far as reading and maybe pick one. if you have any further suggestions (like if you had to pick 1 book), i'd love to hear it.

i went to a couple sporting good stores in my south american locale and of course none of them had any golf equipment and nobody who worked there had any idea where i could find any other than the members only clubs. i'm hoping to find a putter and a midrange iron and some of those foam practice balls (in addition to a handful of real ones to putt with). didn't have room to bring anything from home except balls and i forgot them at the last minute.

honestly, until i find someone who is a member, i can't play at the very few places anywhere near me. my inlaws are working on it. that's why i'm trying to find some used clubs and a couple balls. you don't get access to any part of the property unless you're a member. it was my mistake for not finding a way to stuff my putter and an iron in my bags so i could hit around the house. in the meantime, i love reading and talking about it, so there's still plenty of learning i can do while i'm here. unfortunately, i can't even get cbs here to watch the byron nelson.

sorry about the knee. i've rehabbed one twice and the other once, after tearing ligaments, so i feel for you.

I am. I don't know where you are in your quest. In mine, I left no stone unturned. That book is basic A to B to C. Fit well with my OCD, concrete sequential mind. For 3 bucks you WILL learn something.

Every year before the start of the season, Jack Nicklaus would visit his teacher Jack Grout. Nicklaus would say "Mr. Grout, I'd like to learn this game of golf." They would proceed to start from the beginning with grip, stance, ball position etc. This was even after Jack had won numerous majors. It's a funny game of physics - body - mind interface.

I suppose everyone has there way of doing things .
I've seen a lot of good players ( division 1 NCAA ) , turn pro and start taking lesson and reading books , they didn't make a living playing golf .
I'm more of the Bubba school , get your head screwed on straight and relax , if you have talent it will show up .

i'm a fan of harvey pennick's little red book.

although it did not appear to have helped at all after the first 3 holes today. Ouch.

Bob rotella, any of his books are good golf mind books, and also the book by Raymond floyd, the elements of scoring, good book and you could pick it up for next to nothing off ebay

This fucking shit with only one cart girl pic, we need some action in here.

I basically have been only playing on the weekdays with either no cart girl, or lack of talent, so I have missed some opportunities, but come on, we need some contributions here.

Tye1on, up in WY, they have to have some talent up there, right? All these Bay Area duffers, get out your camera, right?

I know Canadians have square wheels on their cart beverage vehicles, but you guys have some smoking french chicks too....get cracking.

Everyone learns, and executes differently, self taught or computer generated . Depending on their level of talent, some people might need to go backwards to go further forwards. Kids, just out of high school, go through some huge body changes and can fail hard just from the workouts alone, not to mention the quality of golf. NCAA Div 1 are teams too. SO different from being a lonesome pro trying to get on ANY tour. That reality might hurt for some.

Plus, the traveling lifestyle is not for everyone. Any tour, be it rock and roll, or the PGA, or Nationwide tours are nothing like anyone can imagine.

I love the little red book too. Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite were some of Harvey's students....not a bad career for those two during Jack Nicholas's time. I use long iron drills. Can't wait to get back to working on my game on Monday. I have been a Real Ranger Rick this year. Practice gets me a few good rounds with flashes of semi-good golf, but then I have had to take 3-4 days off and then I seem to go back to full on beginner/gaper status.

Should be picking up my first schedule for work today or tomorrow but I think I should be good to go Friday. I'll let you know.

I work today but I'm going to try to get a bucket in afterwards. I was hitting driver on the back nine at CP and I really wasn't missing it as bad I usually do. Was still missing it but I was leaving managable shit to get out of at least. I'm gonna work with a couple FR duffs to get my swing dialed in.

I was telling one of my buddies that the winds from Riverdale are still blowing around in my fucking head every time I step onto a tee box 'cause before then, I wasn't displeased with how I was playing for how early in the season it still is.

Oh well, just need to get out there and hit buckets with someone who knows what their doing more than I do. Had a few chances in the last week but schedules didn't jive but I def wanna get out in the very near future to work this shit out.

Good call. I wish someone would have mentioned that sooner.

Can't play Friday. I'll be at a wedding in Pleasanton from Wednesday to Sunday, chillin in San Jose/Morgan Hill during the week. Hopefully I'll get a couple rounds in at Almaden Country Club or Cor De Valle.

MF - I'm free today. Coal Creek range? I have a punch card there and the tokens w/ a card are $3 instead of $5 for 40 balls.

I have an easy tip for improving your game. Hit balls on the range AFTER your round. It relieves built up tension in your swing as well as applying the focus during the round. It works.

/\/\/\ Whole heartedly agree with that. I'm only 5'8" with my golf shoes on, and in high school I always thought I had to try to keep up with the 6 + footers and always swung out of my shoes. I was good, but man, when I took a step back from the game and got a lot less serious during college, I decided to always stay in balance. I may not hit the ball as far, but my distance control is a million times better. Playing in heavy winds at Bandon helped, too. You really have to have a solid platform to swing from when the wind is constantly trying to knock you over.
