This was really hard for me to read..........
(Long story short) I got divorced a year ago and left Jester with my ex because I knew that he loved the 100's of acres he could roam that he's always known, and that my ex would be able to take him to work every day, and with my new life and job, I'd have a small yard and a job that I couldn't take him.
I came back to Michigan for a visit a week ago and got to keep Jester with me for the week. He knew me immediately and loved doing most of the stuff we used to do together.
I wish I could visit him more often, but I moved to Tahoe and can't get back to Michigan very often.
Here he is playing catch with me in my moms yard.

And one more of him thinking he's a lap dog, when he was all tuckered out from playing in the yard.

Last time I bumped this most excellent thread was filled with sorrow as my neices sent the pooch I found for them on the rainbow bridge journey.
Today's bump is one of joy as the cycle of owning just another dog continues, this little cutie came to visit yesterday

I voted for tuscadora or tuscy as a name but my neices went with Leah.
she is a six week old chocolate lab pup from the humane society

I grew up with dogs and still have 4 bordercollies in my life, they can be a pain in the ass sometimes but the great thing is that no matter how tired I get of them I always miss them after a day or two.

I love my two girls to no end. But sometimes they push it. Last week my border collie/aussie ate an entire chicken carcass I had stashed in the garbage (with a lock on the cabinet handle, how'd she do it?) and cost me $300 in radiographs and one lovely morning of cutting poop out of her butt puffs due to explosive chicken bone diarrhea. The kelpie/basenji has a bark that shatters eardrums and I am seriously worried about getting kicked out of our new apartment that has paper-thin walls. Any tips on stopping the barking would be helpful. It's only when she hears a noise or gets excited. But the point is, I love my dogs and will live where they can live. And will do everything in my means to make them happy. They are seriously some of my best friends.

i realize this is for dog lovers but i am an animal lover. my first pet was a dog, but every one after that was a cat, mostly by happenstance. the first lived to 15, the second to 5 (hit by a car when my folks were taking care of her while i was in yellowstone for the summer) and the third (and last) to 18. when the last one was about 8, she hopped up on a neighbor's disassembled motorcycle and knocked it over but didn't jump clear. the frame caught her back end and broke either her back or her tail, i couldn't tell. somehow she managed to pull herself back into the house and when i came home with a couple long-time friends, something was obviously wrong and i rushed to her to the emergency vet. i was choked up so bad i couldn't speak to the receptionist -- all this in front of a 10 year old and his dad, who thought i was ridiculous, in the lobby. one of my long-time friends said "geez, man, it's just a cat" and that was basically the end of our friendship.

as it turned out, it broke her tail one vertebrae past her hips, so she survived and although i had the option of chopping her tail off, i couldn't bring myself to do it, and she spent the rest of her years trying to perk up a tail that always flopped to the side. she died in my arms 7 years ago almost to the day and although i have endured my fair share of tragedy with humans, it's still one of the toughest memories of my life.

I hear ya Spook. I will never forget having my dogs die in my arms. Thank goodness the wife let me adopt this little character 6 weeks ago.

An honest question for the dog folks in this thread: Just how far would you go to save your dog?

I ask because I saw a couple on some TV show awhile back that went over $40k into debt to save their dog. Not a special breed or working dog with lots of training invested, and they did not appear to be wealthy. Though I am not a dog-owner I fully understand the sentiment of this thread, but damn, $40k? It made me curious where other people would draw the line.

Too many variables, too hard to say. Depends on what "saving" means, depends on quality of life for the dog afterwards, depends on my own circumstances and what I'm willing to sacrifice at any given time. When I put my Elkhound down I could have "saved" him from dying that day by spending several thousand dollars on heart surgery. He was almost 15 years old, arthritic and having a hard time keeping food down (had to feed him small quantities of soft food). His quality of life was already pretty low, he couldn't even walk a mile any more and struggled to get up the back steps. On top of that, the vet said the surgery might extend his life another 6 months if all went well but there would be no improvement in his other problems. It wasn't worth it to me to spend any money to put him through that for so little return. Letting him go was the best thing for both of us. OTOH, if my current dog had a problem that could be dealt with by throwing a bunch of money at it and would have a high chance of a long healthy life (he's about to turn 5), I'd have a hard time finding the line.

My pal wasn't feeling really hot yesterday morning, so he came to the office with me for the day. We're on day 2 now - he's become a bit of a celebrity. Wish I could do this every day...

Dogs really add a lot to your life, and as a humans, I don't know if I could ever re-pay the debt I owe to him for all he's given me. I tried though - we shared some ice cream today for lunch!

I got this shot taken last week right after my dog Po got diagnosed with lymphoma. He had a nasty cough and swollen nodes and the vet said he has seen it 1000 times. We might have a week or month but Po's days were officially numbered. Po has always been unusually jovial and very social. He is almost 12 and has spent many a day sitting patiently in the shade watching me labor on a chainsaw/shovel/pulaski/framing hammer etc. I always joked that he should be getting $1/hr because of the moral support he would offer a beleaguered work crew. Po was ALWAYS happy!

He has been going downhill by the day. Basically starving tho death because he refuses to eat. Only a few bites of sausage or canned salmon now. He wheezes all night and has a horrible leaky ass thing going on. ped out some nasty black goo at 3 am last night. I have telling myself he is still happy until last night. He was embarrassed and has been wobbly on his feet. can't really get up the stairs.

At what point am I hanging on for my own sake? The clock is ticking to make the call to the vet for one last ride to town.

Vibes, Carpathian. I think you will know when the time is right, but it doesn't sound very good right now. Our dog Dallas died at home and I know he was uncomfortable in the final hours. When we brought him home from the vet that day we didn't know things were that bad and he died that night. We were happy we could be there with him at home in the end, but I have deep regrets that he suffered in his final hours.

Sorry that you're going though this. He sounds like a great dog.

My understanding is that "black goo" is probably blood. Poor Po, he looks like a really sweet dog. Just try to consider what's best for him and you'll come to the right decision.

It can take a day or two to arrange to have a vet come out to your home to put Po asleep. That is really the best way for you to say good bye to a dear friend, so start looking into it. Be sure the vet gives Po two shots. The first to put him to sleep and the second one sends them over the Rainbow Bridge. Don't do just the one lethal shot. My last vet fucked this up as I didn't ask ahead of time. Just take my word for it and get the two shots. And vibes, I am sorry to hear your guy is close to the end.
