That's not what I said, obviously.

Once you're an experienced skier, you develop your own style. Something like what ski magazines try to break down into a power/finesse scale. Which is fine, but it's not only that. We end up liking skis that excel in different terrain or for different purposes, softer or stiffer skis, skis that are comfortable at different speeds... and there's more to it than just a mathematical equation of "if you are 5'6" and weigh 140, you should ski this ski." Not to mention, we could be comparing two people with curvy or straight builds, more or less muscular, etc. and those numbers aren't telling the whole story.

I didn't say physics don't apply. I said for it to be actual useful information, you'd need to know a lot more than height and weight, and without that info, you may as well be asking for my bra size. Yes, it's generic, it might help you get a very rough idea. But if you're really looking for info on what recommendations might apply to you - it's not enough (and wasn't the point of the thread anyway - the question was just what's in your quiver.)

^This is true. Once you are a "level 4" or advanced/expert skier weight/height have little to nothing to do with the ski length or stiffness.

Take racing for example... we had girls from 5'2" 120ibs to 5'11" 185ibs skiing all disciplines on the same length ski. Yes, 5'2" 120ib girls turning 210 cm DH skis with a radius of 45m.

Once you have mastered technique, and are reasonably athletic length isn't an issue. Roll your ankles, knees in and displace feet from body, skis will turn.

Hmmmm.....methinks someone needs to add one more pair of skis/binders/boots to the quiver. Come on, man, everybody's doing it.

Sadly, I've never skied with any of you guys yet, so if it takes tele gear to make it happen, so be it!

Not sure why I keep reading the maggot ski thread, but all quivers intrigue me.

I think there is truth to both points. Definately there is no direct height weight formula, but I would necessarily take ski advice from a guy that weighs 130 (when I am 215).....even if we both are on the same side of Power charts.

To add to AGs ideas though. My wife loves her 180 Explosives, and I have lots of buddies (and lots of male maggots too) who are much bigger, but ski that. Also, it is interesting that I ski a 190 Expl. When I have tons of friends, some 5'6" 140-150 who also love the same ski.

Bottom line, once someone is a strong skier, make the best guess towards what you like.....and ultimately it will feel very natural to you, will be an extension if you will.

'tis a very, very valid argument made. It is about as much skiing style as it is strength. Of course you do need to be so proficient and strong to ski some stiffer skis correctly (don't know if thats the right word but as close as I could come).

I'm an 11-year boarder who got into skiing last year. Absolutely lovin it!! Got a brand new pair of last year's Atomic B 7:9s sitting there ready to go. Thinking about a fatty purchase midway thru the season as I get more powder experience. Also wanna add a split to the quiver this year.

    159 Atomic B 7:9s
    163 Atomic Triplets

152 Atomic Fallen Angel (short poppy freestyle board, rides like a dream)
158 Rossi Jeremy Jones (pow stick)
    154 Chorus (teaching/rock board)
154 PL crappy ole beat-up first board, comes out on gaper day

    YAY for MG coming back!

    huckwheat and grskier -

I think it's probably the same as for the guys, height and weight matter a hell of a lot less than how aggressive a skier somebody is when defining what skis to choose.

Thanks for the last page of discussion. I plan on demoing a lot of skis this season and never even thought of skiing a length like the hubbies. I will give it a go and ski them, not let them ski me.

    My quiver:

    K2 Nancys 168 - All Conditions
    Volkl 6* 163 - Early Season Caravalicious
Solomon PRs 165 w/Freerides - Powder Only Touring
K2 Sahalies 168 w/Titanal IIs - All Conditions Touring - Did the Berner Oberland Tour in April/May a couple of years ago on these and they rocked!

I'm probably going to replace the PRs with something new this season. Any recommendations? Will also be switching out the Freerides for Dynafits.

160 K2 Phat Luvs with Titanal II.
    Icelantic Nomads with Silvrette Pure.
165 Explosives with Freerides (rock boards).

Maybe steal one of Kya's Dynafits to mount on the Icelantics so he will ditch his buddies and take me touring...instead of the other way around.

Well it is snowing outside my window right this minute- Teton Pass looks nasty on the webcam, and I am about to pull the trigger on new Volkls over the phone at Colorado Ski and Golf (last year's Mantras $449 plus shipping!)

Quiver for this year looks like:

Karhu Jak BC 172 with Dynafit TLT- best powder setup ever (for me- at 5'6" and a dense 140)

Volkl Karma 169 with Fritschi- ski area board for cut-up snow, spring skiing

Dynafit FR 10.0 169 with TLT's- super-light backcountry ski- what I ski the least- am open to sell boards but not the binders

Atomic TMX 169 with TLT's- rock and spring/ volcano skis

Now want those 177 Mantras BAAAAD- have a new pair of Fritschis for them. Am trying to resist the Auras as the real deal sounds better. Have not demoed but I want a big fast swooping ski. No pictures right now, as camera is broken, but am typing fast so that I can resist the credit card leaping out of my wallet.

    Hooray for winter!

    boots??

Love this thread, thanks for the ski suggestions ladies.

Here's my gear issue...I have larger muscular calves, a really high arch and instep, skinny heels and ski boots are the things that give me the most trouble. If i have my instep buckles too loose, my heels slip up and when they're tight enough to keep my heel down, my toes are numb in about 5 min (not due to cold, but to lack of blood supply). I've dealt with it for as long as i can remember, but with all the advances in gear technology...i feel like i shouldn't have to anymore. I currently ride Nordica boots and they are the first pair of womens boots that i've ever ridden. Used to race/am an agressive skiier, so i'm looking for a stiffer boot....any suggestions??

    ...

Shell-fit(1-1.3 fingers;-))...ya' gotta go after the boots that match up with your feet in shape....to some degree, go for snug heel pocket & room over instep....rest can be stretched/blown if bad comes to worse(which isn't that bad;-)

The priors do look really nice. Nothing new to add to my quiver this year, just wardrobe additions and things I've gotten rid of.
