When the vim was new, they definitely beat out youtube's 360 or whatever it was default resolution but for fuck's sake, I can't even watch anything on the damn page anymore. The horizontal tearing makes me want to draw pictures of mohammad, and it's tough to even watch a video without pausing it to load while I go play the peanut butter trick with the dog. I know it's all artsy™ and crap to use vimeo instead of youtube (who's newer HD settings kill KILL KILL vimeo's), but that crap needs to change. It's like still thinking that macs are the only way to edit, Lux Eterna (theme from requiem for a dream) is a good idea for YOUR video, or that snowboarding is a fad.

I disagree, Vimeo is the site smart people use. Maybe you have video card or internet issues but vimeo has the best content as well as the best video play back for not paying for it, when you have a paid account then vimeo is even better. I agree mac's are overrated and most people use adobe now days which is a PC program that you can use on a mac. So anyways, you just keep uploading to youtube, your rant is ridiculous.

Vimeo has generically, in general terms the best content because people are under the illusion that vimeo is where they should post things if they want to be taken seriously. That has nothing to do with the delivery presentation which is where my issue lies. The presence of the content is why I'm so annoyed because I have to deal with their crappy flash, and insufficient servers to watch anything worth a damn.

It ain't video cards. I've got a computer built for graphics and am sitting 4 feet from two others to do the same.....one of them built last week. All the same issue. Same on different networks.

It appears my complaints have flown over your head since I've never once uploaded a video to youtube and only a handful on vimeo which are then difficult to watch. Sorry about that. One day you'll see a well hosted, high definition video somewhere that doesn't split in the middle whenever there's motion and you'll understand. Until then, keep paying vimeo. can you provide an example of a video with the vertical tearing. i've never seen it, or i don't know it when i see it. you have schooled me on jellovision, so this seems like the next logical step.
i have been impressed with youtube, but generally choose the 720 version even when the 1080 is available. i don't typically have issues with vimeo though. actually, sometimes i do, but it's always when the kids are watching netflix upsatairs, so i assumed it had to do with that. maybe not.

i prefer the whole vimeo experience more (as a publisher, not necessarily as a viewer). this is also based on when i switched to vimeo, since i haven't done much with youtube since. vimeo has changed and i'm sure youtube has too.
none of the above matters though, since there's no way to embed a youtube video on this site so people can watch it fullscreen w/o going to youtube. that's the dealbreaker for me and it's not even youtube's fault.

in short. i switched to vimeo because i liked them better when i was using both. i like them more now than i did then, so i see no reason to switch especially since there's no fullscreen option here.
although i should add that i like flash and steve jobs can kiss my ass.

Hi, my name is G.R., and I was a vimeo homer until 6 months ago.. I have been off the vimeo uploads since 6 months ago, but since I hang around dvxuser, I still find myself browsing for "cool kid content" on vimeo. I can't get enough of those slow uploads... they rise my anticipation level for the "cooler" content than what is on youtube... I mean, come on, my 12 year old nephew knows and uses youtube, how can it compete.

PD: you've seen horizontal tearing, you just probably hadn't heard the term.

Here's about the only way I know to capture it since it depends on so many variables (one of them how a flash video is set to refresh). Not my vid but a pretty good example.

The way vimeo handles 24fps content makes baby jeebus cry. Google the term and you'll find some interesting diatribes.


But yeah, the fact that vimeo doesn't get all youtubey on copyrighted music makes it the better of the two in that regard......but that's still only two ways to host a video. There are more options. I'd rather use neither (and do). I'm just a little irked at this point that people still see vimeo as the badass standout that it was when they first hit a scene a few years ago and you could load one of the few hundred videos they hosted in a decent amount of time and it looked damn good. They need to up their hosting capacity. In the meantime, I wish people would realize their faults, make a stink about it, and either come up with a more capable hosting option or press vimeo to up their game. But the whole 'this is where serious artists must go' crap gets sillier by the week.

It takes me maybe 7min to upload a video to vimeo sometimes longer but thats what you get for a free account, you have to wait in line and I will wait for better quality, features, and all around fasteruploading for people to watch the video. And as for the 24p content, who actually uses 24p no days unless you are putting your video on film? 30fps is the new standard so get with the times and convert your video to 29.97 deinterlaced or get a progressive camera.
And as for the slow uploads, someone in this forum posted a ski video of themselves on youtube recently asking for editing suggestions and on the 320p setting it honestly took me 15min to upload the video to watch so when you say vimeo takes forever to watch HD video then youtube takes an eternity.

And hosting your own server in no way compares unless you have a business class internet account that gives you ton's of bandwidth, and even if you pay for server space you still wont get the same exsposure as you would on vimeo.

I am deffinately not a kid and I don't mooch off my parrents like so many kids/people now days, I actually pay my own bills and if ever at some point in the future I became a professional I would pay for a vimeo account because it is honestly the best option out there. Hell, you can watch the entire movie G.N.A.R. in HD on vimeo. Show me a complete youtube movie in HD that actually loads fast enough to be watchable. Or any other upload site that will do this if there is even one?

It's just a dreamhost account I started about 5 years ago. But that plus the domain name is less per year than a vimeo plus account. I'll never come close to using my monthly allocation............it's kind of a waste actually. When I get home I can give you the details about the account/price etc. But you can definitely host your own videos plus a plethora of your own material for the same costs.

I'm not saying that if you're genuinely trying to get a product out there you shouldn't use vimeo......it's just that it's become kind of the only option based on the perception (accurately at one time) of the presentation quality vs. what's actually provided. If anything, I'm just grumpy that the service is held so highly, yet isn't really that great. Kudos to them though.........they're killing it. But they're not getting any of my money.

I'm sure if you did the math and calculated the cost of managing your server, which you obviously do yourself so you save money there, add that to your total yearly costs I am sure for the average person vimeo would be the best option.
And eventhough 24p= fewer frames so it compresses better I think I will stick with 30fps since it has pretty much become a web standard and the film look excuse for 24p is BS.

OK, I'll pick 'em apart one-by-one, expert.

24p. We shoot EX-3's, DSLRs and RED Ones. Everything is shot 24p. If you use your own video hosting you can display 24p. And the reason is, it is more natural motion with the blur created between frames. With the advent of 60p, you look more "videoy" because the motion blur isn't perceived as natural to the human eye. The only time 60p looks "right" is for slow motion converted to 24p (1.5x slower). the ONLY time you want to deal with 29.97 is for broadcast which 99.9% of the people here don't do (I do). And still, shooting everything native 24p and having the deck do the pulldown to 29.97 for you for PTT is better than shooting 29.97 and converting to 24 for web delivery.

I don't run my own server. I said you could but my Hostgator account is cheaper than Vimeo Pro (which I have), I have an unlimited amount of bandwidth and unlimited amount of storage. The vimeo plus (or pro or whatever it is called) is going bye-bye now that I am smart enough to deal with my own assets properly.

You said that video took 15 minutes in 320p and right after your comment in the other thread I loaded the video and it took ~32 seconds at 720 via wireless. Maybe your internet service provider should be the one you are blaming, not youtube.

I like to content better on vimeo. I think vimeo vids look better when embedded and I like the customization options.
