Bridger Bowl ski area has bought 71 acres of land near its base area, which general manager Randy Elliott says will be used in part to expand beginner terrain in years to come.
"Our beginner area is really small right now and pretty congested. This allows us to expand to the south and have a larger beginner area," Elliott said Monday.
He said no expansion is planned in the immediate future, and that only a portion of the 71 acres purchased would be used for skiing. The rest of the new property could be used for more parking or other projects.
"This is just thinking toward the future and giving us more options for growing in future years," he said.
The land was bought from Bridger Canyon Partners, a group of investors that bought hundreds of acres near Bridger's base area in 2005. News stories at the time say the group planned to develop housing, overnight accommodations, restaurants and other businesses. But a plan drew up in 2007 that called for 75 single-family homes and 450 overnight accommodations caused and uproar amongst Bridger Canyon residents and was scraped in 2008.
John Barkow, a member of Bridger Canyon Partners, said Monday the group has shifted gears and is now selling off its remaining 274 acres in five large parcels.
"It's somewhat a circumstance of the market," Barkow said. "It's still a fantastic property for a recreational buyer or someone interested in a development opportunity."
Barkow said the land Bridger bought had been on the market of a little over a year. An e-mail from Bridger Bowl management describes the ski area's new property as land south and adjacent to the Snowflake Lift and top parking lot area.
