2 good ones from the most crowded Saturday I have seen at Kirkwood in some time.

"No man, don't bring your shorts, you need your warm sh*t, there's snow up here" -Guy talking on the cell phone at the lodge

    *******

"We're going over, ALL THE WAY over," Gaper #1 says to Gaper #2 while pointing at a traverse track he has stumbled upon after watching others ski across the track into the trees toward the boundary.

"Nooooo...." Gaper #2 blurts out in amazement.

    "Yes!" Gaper #1 replies triumphantly.

This lift was moving WAY too slow.......

Dude glances down at my Solly rock skis and offers up this gem:

Dude: "How can you ski on Salomon's? I only support small manufacturers."

Me: "Umm, these are just my rock skis. I have two pair of BRO's for when we get a bit more coverage." As I glance down at his Elan's, I follow up with; "What other skis do you have?"

Dude: "I also have a pair of Blizzard powder skis I got online at a huge discount. I stay away from the mega corporations like Salomon/Rossignol/K2/Volkl. I like to support the little guy. My brother works in a golf pro shop, they refuse to carry Taylor Made for the same reason. They are always dumping clubs in places like Costco, he cant compete."

Me: "What would you rather see them do to get rid of unsold inventory?"

Dude: "They should just sell it direct online!"

Me: "Wait a second, you mean you want them to just offer up all unsold inventory online at deep discounts direct to the public, rather than offer it to their dealer network, then selling all the leftovers to places like Costco? Won't that totally fuck up the dealers? Most retailers love close-out inventory, they can buy it at a low price and still make a 50% margin on it, which is better than most current year offerings."

Dude: "Well.... umm, I don't know."

Me: "Dealers are always offered first crack at close-outs, if they fail to buy them, they have no one to blame but themselves if they see another store with the old stock for sale."

Dude: "Yea, well, they still shouldn't sell to Costco."

Me: "So, that inventory they should just sell online, direct?"

Dude: "Umm, well no, maybe not."

Deciding we are still far enough away from the summit after a long, awkward silence, I decided to have a bit more fun....

Me: "By the way, you mentioned you like to support the 'little guys'. Instead of sending your money to Europe, why don't you buy skis from Moment, PM Gear or ON3P and keep your cash here on the west coast and in the U.S.?"

    Dude: "Who are they?"

Me: "Local independent companies, making hand-made skis right here in the U.S. You should check them out!"

Dude: "Oh, they are probably really expensive. I only paid $400 for my Blizzards with bindings. I wait for the really good deals online."

Me: Are you sure they aren't Taylor Mades?"

    Dude: "Huh???"

Over my shoulder as I slide down the ramp at the top........

Me: "Isn't that what you were just complaining about?"

Exactly. If that is what was going down, that is the opposite of gaper, it is informed observation.

At Meadows yesterday, on the ridge above Rock Garden, about 3:15. My buddy says he wants to go ski Yoda Bowl, but unfortunately the Private Reserve closes at three. A troller skis by right then, and I ask confirm that the gates closed.
Him: "It closes at three, I'm actually headed down there right now."
Me (sensing an opportunity to cap an extraordinary day): "To sweep? Mind if we join you?"
Him: "Yeah man no problem. Just don't gape or fall, bro."

Now, I have actually started to really respect the Patrol at Meadows over the last few years. They have opened up so much new terrain that you can actually fill your day with real lines. And hooo-boy, there are some real dream babes working for them, too. But this guy and his attitude are now on my watch list. And JZ and I have a new catch phrase.

Just Don't Gape or Fall, Bro.

And why are you upset at this guy? If I was running sweep at the end of the day and I was doing you a favor by letting you sneak in ahead of me I wouldn't want to have to wait for your ass tumbling down the mountain so that I can close the slope and go on to the next one.

    Don't be clueless...

So, in this particular instance you're the gaper being quoted. Interesting.

Kettle meet pot. Why you so angry? Long time no sucky fucky? Simmer down.

He's not upset. It's that the patroller - cool guy who let him in - used the word gape, so it fits perfectly in the gaper thread. Of course.

Kind of similarly I saw a dude back in Mott who dragged his son down through the bushes under the chair (they're still pretty damn undoable,) and he was obviously incapable of skiing anything steeper than Orion. Dad was fucken cussing this poor kid out. He'll probably end up hating skiing and doing drugs instead.
