Who/when/where/why? EC Summit 2k10 debate and shitshow spectatular!

    I think it's time......

Where/when is the bell going to toll for the EC mags?

What I'd like to see -

less than 7 hours from the major population centers (NY/Bos/PH)
someplace off the beaten path that millions of people aren't TRing every day
a mountain where someone has a ticket/lodging dealio, or that will at least be friendly about giving us a group rate

*This vote allows us to dominate a mountain venue for a whole weekend. Let's get our act together and get an awesome fucking party organized so mags everywhere know that on any given day the EC MAGGOTS might be having the best fucking time.

Oh, let's not do 2/20th. It's a holiday weekend and we don't need the competition for rooms and the various lack of deals that go with that. Any earlier and we won't get shit organized.

2/27, 3/6, or 3/13 would be more ideal, any conflicts?

    So, presenting the list:

place / tix / distance from / stoke level +
    geographic center vert
    of the world (NYC)

    Burke 49 with coup 5.5 hrs 2011 ft / ?
    Smuggs $2-1price 5.5 hrs 2600? / high anxiety
Whiteface liftopia ftw 5 hrs 3Million feet / slide stoke!
    Sbush/MRG $56 sat 5 hrs 2650 / slide brook stoke!
    Cannon $66 5.5 hrs 2180 / Mittersill stoke
    Killington $82 5 hrs 3125 / you tell me
Saddleback maybe a dollar, but too damn far 2000 /
    Hickory $hope cheap 3.5 hrs 1000?
    Jay $2-1 price 6.5 hrs 2000
Stowe $1 million 5.5 hrs FIS level
Magic $depends 4 stoke: seeing the new no friends plaque for one thing.

    Let's do this.

    edit to add:

If you vote and your venue gets chosen and you don't show up on a weekend you're free, you're the biggest douchnozzle std cue-tip ever.

    Magic, February 20th

Added bonus of torchlight parade open to the general public. This isn't even a contest, you're skiing in the dark with fire. I rest my case your honor
For sure, you have to be lost to find a place that can't be found, elseways everyone would know where it was

Let's debate this before just casting votes.

doesn't every mountain have a torchlight parade like 10x a year?

    Who cares?

damn, matt i find you much more agreeable in person, seriously.

some of the coolest mags i know were sub-100 posters not too long ago

i like being closer to home myself...nothing like a 5hr ride home after a big party.

i also like the idea of doing it somewhere that has a single base area, minimal lift lines, and the possibility of a pow day that will deliver all day...oh yea, and the best vibe of the bunch imo (haven't been to burke, but at 4-5 hours away, with good reason)

If you're a sub 100 poster than get lost. no one wants to meet you.
so i must be a dick (yank me) or douche-nozzle cue-tip, but will vote Magic again.

it would also be a good opportunity to show the place off to those checking it out ffor the first time, or at least for the first time with lots of good company. sub-100 posters especially, who may have more friends outside the community than in, and might bring said friends.

the hill's great, the bar's great, and would guess bluebird would take care of us as he did last year.

i would recommend we do it earlier in the year with hopes of hitting a pow day, or at least a likelihood of enjoying the snowpack at peak depths.

if i had to pick a second choice it would be sugarbush. the other choices are either too far, too crowded or too unappealing imo.

you may not post a lot, but you were here before mr cranky pants who started this thread.

i see sub-100 posters as fresh blood...places like this can get stale without it.

Well I guess I will vote for my home mountain also. More of a bag than a nozzle. Had dinner with a Maggot last Friday and We discussed this very subject. His words were " some of the Magic crowd needs to expand thier comfort level and support other areas."
Not dissing the mountain but feel this party should move around.

In support of the Bush I offer this: Group tickets for 20+ $56 Sat. $43 Sun.. We can rent the Slide Brook Lodge for $1000 a night for approx 24 Mags. I know Alex and we may be able to bed roll some more for extra $. Bar, food, Hottub and could probably cook breakfast if we clean the kitchen.
$181 for 2 nights lodging and tickets.
The Chef Jon Luc is a friend of mine and he would come up with some dinner specials for us.
I can arrange for strippers Here if there is enough interest. Bring your own blow. [torchlight parade, what am I Fucking 5?]

Lunch we could hang at this place:

Dino would be a great host at his sandwich shop in the Village, we could park here and have lunch away from the resort crowd. Place can fit 50+ with Switchback on tap. I am sure we could get a Mag. discount.

If You are going to promote your area, throw up a plan! Find a lodge for a crew, arrange some food, hookers , hell get some Pumpkins and Spoons.
Last Year we stood around after in the rain and delt with Shitty jukebox music and Silverbacks at the inn. Sundays breakfast I felt like Mr. White discussing the job.

If I remember right (which I may not) last years at Magic was the same day as the Sugarbush Castlerock Extreme. Let's try not to do that this year?

um, i said i was the dick, based on the premise of your initial post.
i thought you were being mr cranky pants.

good points about magic being a mini-summit all the time.

hickory would be fun, if only to see how drinking and t-bar riding mix/don't mix.

i wonder how many folks would wear those frat party, hands-free beer drinking attachments on their helmets?

I don't really know much about lodging options near Hickory (although we have some on the web site) since I drive up from Niskayuna each day. The cadets from West Point were just here this weekend and stayed in the second floor of the lodge for 2 nights, so there is a precedent for doing that. Used to be we would have a couple of sleepovers there each season but not sure how that works any more. Certainly plenty of places in Lake George and Glens Falls.

There is definitely a 20% discounted group rate with a free pass for the 21st person (as in get a group of 20 other people, organizer gets free ticket), but it has to be arranged in advance.

No liquor license, so BYOB is the standard of the day. The deck in front of the lodge gets great late afternoon sun to enhance your brew imbibing pleasure. I generally bring a spread of bread, cheese, sorpressata, tomato, avocado, and apple to share with folks at the end of the day.

Potential downsides for Hickory are what they have always been: lift reliability and snowpack. For example, a wheel on tower 8 of poma 1 broke today. The mountain is supposed to have spares on hand but there were none to be found. So the end of the afternoon we were back on the T-bar and it's not looking good for tomorrow.

Right now snow is not an issue. Absolutely great conditions (see my most recent pix in the Hickory thread). Looks like we should get some more this week and next weekend poma 2 should pass inspection and the top of the mountain is going to be just sick, sick, sick.

I didn't realize that Magic was basically a summit every weekend - it was kind of an impulse vote from having a blast there Saturday I guess. I'll ski and drink anywhere if I can get to it.

Just to clarify, if the consensus ends up being Hickory, I will do everything I can to host/organize the event. Late Feb there should be some outrageous bump and tree skiing. But I'm not voting (this year) as I'm still well into jong status. I know I'll out in T-ride Feb 12-17 so wouldn't be able to attend then. Otherwise I'm planning to be wherever/whenever this thing goes down.

I'd also like to throw out the possibility of Sugarloaf in April. The mountain is empty, the snowpack is awesome, and the stay and ski deals are generally very affordable. I did this for a few years and was amazed at how the snow would set up at night, then after a couple of groomer cruisers in the morning to warm up, the snow would revert back to soft, dry packed powder. Up top we would just be wallowing in it and the bumps down below were soft, explosive pillows. I'm trying to figure out how I can cut out of work in early April to reestablish this pilgrimage as an annual tradition.

Jay has Grampa Grunts... just sayin'

It IS my home mountain, but I voted for it before that rule was put into place, (and then subsequently edited out) so I assume that I'm forgiven? Anyways, if folks DO want to head up to Jay for this thing I could definitely help arrange cheap lodging, ticket deals, and guides around the gnar!

Obviously I am biased A) cause I work there and B) I can't get anywhere else on a weekend so my first option would be Magic. I can take care of discounted tickets and talk to some Inns for lodging.

Other cool options would be Hickory or Jay (I can probably talk to a friend for some good group rates). I absolutely want to check out Saddleback this year too. It is tremendous trek to get there though.

correct me if I am wrong, but how many other mountains let the general public actually carry the flaming torches down the mountain in the dark??

HOWEVER, I need to through the caveat out there that a potential discount wouldn't be that great during a holiday week. Actually, I doubt it would be anywhere.

SMUGGS. The point of a summit is to:
    1. Ski at a rad place
    2. Be shown around by the local mags
    3. Have fun as a group

I think the real question is: What areas have mags willing to step up, organize and assist? That's what really makes a summit succeed.
