Take Me to Jail - Homemade Avy Bombs?

So, anybody make/use their own avy bombs for backcountry use? You know, you're standing at the top, wondering if it's safe to ride. So you just huck a couple blasts over the edge. If it don't go, you can be pretty sure it's safe for you.

Just make sure there's nobody in the slide path below, before you blast.

I haven't done this myself, but i'd be lying if i said i'd never thought about it. I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to make some appropriately sized charges. The ones i've seen ski patrol use look like they mixed 'em up themselves in plastic jugs.

Better than using a rope to cut off a chunk of cornice, right?

Ok, tell me what an ass i am for even conceiving of such thoughts.

This would be a bad idea for a couple of reasons.

    1. Need a blasters liscense to carry, create, and detonate such a charge (mix of ANFO and diesel fuel)
    2. Sympathetic releases in the surrounding area
    3. Used for mitigation work not for slope testing. If the slope is that questionable, ski somewhere else
    4. Although fairly stable, it can pose a risk in transportation. Must seperate fuses/caps/detcord from ANFO mixture.
    5. Class A felony to posses without a blasters license and properly stored.

Other than these 5 things off the top of my head, it would be very cool to set a hand charge in the backcountry. Reality is you should be very confident you know what will happpen on the slope you intend to ski and should not need a hand charge.

I know patrollers that went for rides after they blasted slopes that then slid on them when they ski cut it.

Bombs do not always make a slope safe.

    You said it.

There are so many bad things about this idea. If you really want to blow shit up, talk Ski Patrol into letting you hump one of their packs for dawn patrol on an avy control day.

I wouldn't really ever do it. But it is in some ways a tempting thought, isn't it? I was kind of hoping to prompt some crazy's story about having done this.

A guy i skied with on tuesday said that his wife had taken some sort of avy class or something through a college, and they had set off charges in the backcountry for the class. I wonder if they were licensed and whatnot?

This is what I use, more accurate than hand-thrown charges. I find that if I can find a rock sticking up and hit it pretty square with the first round I can save $$ on grenades. If you take the stock off it fits ok in a Heli pro pack.

I launch it from the trailhead and control the entire valley at once. Sometimes the thermal pulse makes things crusty. It does make night skiing easy since everything glows afterwards.

    That makes perfect sense!

I thought the red glow was from the red closed lights on the status boards inbounds. Picked my way down by that glow after waking up after a nap in the snow-cave more than once. On a cloudy night it really reflects of the clouds.

I always just light a pack of Blackcat firecrackers and toss 'em over the cornice.

I found the perfect answer! Build this with parts from Home Depot. Use hairspray for a fuel for testing and starter fluid for BC use!

i used to blow up M80's all the time. So let's see, the M-388 ought to be almost five times as powerful right?

also- dry ice in 2L plastic coke bottle plus pee=kaboom!

of course, it also equals pieces of bottle everywhere, which isn't cool. also, water will work too.

friend of mine use to pop a hole in a tennis ball and then pour in ground up road flares. Insert a water proof fuse and seal it with some silicone, with that, he had a homemade avy bomb. Not sure if he ever used for an avy, but used it in a private pond to go fishing all the time
    ....and michigan still sucks
